HANASUI: Multi-view Observable and Movable Fogscreen

Part 4: Entertainment Devices, Platforms and SystemsInternational audienceIn this paper, we propose the method for creating multi-view movable fogscreen, and then implement it in our system called ā€œHANASUIā€. ā€œHANASUIā€ displays handheld-like fireworks through a fog screen instead of sparkles. Our method generates projection data dynamically from a virtual space and then casts it with multiple projectors, tracking the marker attached to the device which spouts fog at the fogscreen with infrared cameras and infrared floodlights. Finally, we conducted a survey to verify the capabilities of ā€œHANASUIā€ and its potential for art and entertainment purposes

The contribution of seed dispersers to tree species diversity in tropical rainforests

Tropical rainforests are known for their extreme biodiversity, posing a challenging problem in tropical ecology. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the diversity of tree species, yet our understanding of this phenomenon remains incomplete. Here, we consider the contribution of animal seed dispersers to the species diversity of trees. We built a multi-layer lattice model of trees whose animal seed dispersers are allowed to move only in restricted areas to disperse the tree seeds. We incorporated the effects of seed dispersers in the traditional theory of allopatric speciation on a geological time scale. We modified the lattice model to explicitly examine the coexistence of new tree species and the resulting high biodiversity. The results indicate that both the coexistence and diversified evolution of tree species can be explained by the introduction of animal seed dispersers

Aberrant methylation in promoter-associated CpG islands of multiple genes in chronic myelogenous leukemia blast crisis

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) has a typical progressive course with transition from a chronic phase to a terminal blast crisis phase. The mechanisms that lead to disease progression remain to be elucidated. To understand the role of aberrant methylation in the progression of CML, DNA methylation patterns in 16 patients with CML blast crisis were analyzed. Methylation status was analyzed by methylation-specific PCR (MSP) for 13 genes, including cell cycle regulating genes, DNA repair genes, apoptosis-related genes, a differentiation-associated gene and a cytokine signaling gene. The frequency of samples with methylation in each of the following genes were: p15, 18%; MGMT, 12%; RARĪ², 12%; p16, 6%; DAPK, 6% and FHIT, 6%. In total, four (25%) cases showed methylation of at least one gene. None of the 16 cases showed hypermethylation of the hMLH1 or hMSH2 genes. These results suggest that hypermethylation of cell cycle control genes, but not DNA mismatch repair genes, play a significant role in the progression of CML

A new assessment method for right ventricular diastolic function using right heart catheterization by pressureā€volume loop

Abstract Diastolic stiffness coefficient (Ī²) and endā€diastolic elastance (Eed) are ventricularā€specific diastolic parameters. However, the diastolic function of right ventricle had not been investigated sufficiently due to the lack of established evaluation method. We evaluated the validity of these parameters calculated using only data of right heart catheterization (RHC) and assessed it in patients with restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) and cardiac amyloidosis. We retrospectively analyzed 46 patients with heart failure who underwent RHC within 10ā€‰days of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Right ventricular endā€diastolic volume and endā€systolic volume were calculated using only RHC data, which were found to be finely correlated with those obtained from CMR. Ī² and Eed calculated by this method were also significantly correlated with those derived from conventional method using CMR. By this method, Ī² and Eed were significantly higher in RCM with amyloidosis group than dilated cardiomyopathy group. In addition, the Ī² and Eed calculated by our method were finely correlated with E/A ratio on echocardiography. We established an easy method to estimate Ī² and Eed of right ventricle from only RHC. The method finely demonstrated right ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with RCM and amyloidosis
