Optimisation of the weighting functions of an H<sub>∞</sub> controller using genetic algorithms and structured genetic algorithms
In this paper the optimisation of the weighting functions for an H<sub>∞</sub> controller using genetic algorithms and structured genetic algorithms is considered. The choice of the weighting functions is one of the key steps in the design of an H<sub>∞</sub> controller. The performance of the controller depends on these weighting functions since poorly chosen weighting functions will provide a poor controller. One approach that can solve this problem is the use of evolutionary techniques to tune the weighting parameters. The paper presents the improved performance of structured genetic algorithms over conventional genetic algorithms and how this technique can assist with the identification of appropriate weighting functions' orders
Genetic programming for the automatic design of controllers for a surface ship
In this paper, the implementation of genetic programming (GP) to design a contoller structure is assessed. GP is used to evolve control strategies that, given the current and desired state of the propulsion and heading dynamics of a supply ship as inputs, generate the command forces required to maneuver the ship. The controllers created using GP are evaluated through computer simulations and real maneuverability tests in a laboratory water basin facility. The robustness of each controller is analyzed through the simulation of environmental disturbances. In addition, GP runs in the presence of disturbances are carried out so that the different controllers obtained can be compared. The particular vessel used in this paper is a scale model of a supply ship called CyberShip II. The results obtained illustrate the benefits of using GP for the automatic design of propulsion and navigation controllers for surface ships
Formal Derivation of Concurrent Garbage Collectors
Concurrent garbage collectors are notoriously difficult to implement
correctly. Previous approaches to the issue of producing correct collectors
have mainly been based on posit-and-prove verification or on the application of
domain-specific templates and transformations. We show how to derive the upper
reaches of a family of concurrent garbage collectors by refinement from a
formal specification, emphasizing the application of domain-independent design
theories and transformations. A key contribution is an extension to the
classical lattice-theoretic fixpoint theorems to account for the dynamics of

High-resolution UV spectrum of the benzene—N2 van der Waals complex
The rotationally resolved spectrum of the 610 band of the S1 ← S0 electronic transition of the benzene—N2 van der Waals complex has been recorded and 119 transitions assigned. The C6H6·N2 complex, produced in a pulsed molecular beam, was detected by mass-selected two-photon two-colour ionization employing a high-resolution (ΔνUV = 100 MHz, fwhm) pulsed-amplified cw laser for the resonant intermediate excitation. The observed rotational structure is that of a rigid symmetric top with weaker additional rotational transitions most likely arising from the free internal rotation of the N2 in the plane parallel to the benzene ring. The N2 is located parallel to the benzene ring at a distance of 3.50 Å; this decreases by 45 mÅ in the excited electronic state
Constraints on the Variation of the Fine Structure Constant from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis
We put bounds on the variation of the value of the fine structure constant
, at the time of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We study carefully all light
elements up to Li. We correct a previous upper limit on estimated from He primordial abundance and we find interesting new
potential limits (depending on the value of the baryon-to-photon ratio) from
Li, whose production is governed to a large extent by Coulomb barriers. The
presently unclear observational situation concerning the primordial abundances
preclude a better limit than |\Delta \alpha/\alpha| \lsim 2\cdot 10^{-2}, two
orders of magnitude less restrictive than previous bounds. In fact, each of the
(mutually exclusive) scenarios of standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis proposed,
one based on a high value of the measured deuterium primordial abundance and
one based on a low value, may describe some aspects of data better if a change

Sediment removal by prairie filter strips in row-cropped ephemeral watersheds
Twelve small watersheds in central Iowa were used to evaluate the effectiveness of prairie filter strips (PFS) in trapping sediment from agricultural runoff. Four treatments with PFS of different size and location (100% rowcrop, 10% PFS of total watershed area at footslope, 10% PFS at footslope and in contour strips, 20% PFS at footslope and in contour strips) arranged in a balanced incomplete block design were seeded in July 2007. All watersheds were in bromegrass ( L.) for at least 10 yr before treatment establishment. Cropped areas were managed under a no-till, 2-yr corn ( L.)-soybean [ (L.) Merr.] rotation beginning in 2007. About 38 to 85% of the total sediment export from cropland occurred during the early growth stage of rowcrop due to wet field conditions and poor ground cover. The greatest sediment load was observed in 2008 due to the initial soil disturbance and gradually decreased thereafter. The mean annual sediment yield through 2010 was 0.36 and 8.30 Mg ha for the watersheds with and without PFS, respectively, a 96% sediment trapping efficiency for the 4-yr study period. The amount and distribution of PFS had no significant impact on runoff and sediment yield, probably due to the relatively large width (37-78 m) of footslope PFS. The findings suggest that incorporation of PFS at the footslope position of annual rowcrop systems provides an effective approach to reducing sediment loss in runoff from agricultural watersheds under a no-till system
Geomagnetic storm dependence on the solar flare class
Content. Solar flares are often used as precursors of geomagnetic storms. In
particular, Howard and Tappin (2005) recently published in A&A a dependence
between X-ray class of solar flares and Ap and Dst indexes of geomagnetic
storms which contradicts to early published results.
Aims. We compare published results on flare-storm dependences and discuss
possible sources of the discrepancy.
Methods. We analyze following sources of difference: (1) different intervals
of observations, (2) different statistics and (3) different methods of event
identification and comparison.
Results. Our analysis shows that magnitude of geomagnetic storms is likely to

Random walk through fractal environments
We analyze random walk through fractal environments, embedded in
3-dimensional, permeable space. Particles travel freely and are scattered off
into random directions when they hit the fractal. The statistical distribution
of the flight increments (i.e. of the displacements between two consecutive
hittings) is analytically derived from a common, practical definition of
fractal dimension, and it turns out to approximate quite well a power-law in
the case where the dimension D of the fractal is less than 2, there is though
always a finite rate of unaffected escape. Random walks through fractal sets
with D less or equal 2 can thus be considered as defective Levy walks. The
distribution of jump increments for D > 2 is decaying exponentially. The
diffusive behavior of the random walk is analyzed in the frame of continuous
time random walk, which we generalize to include the case of defective
distributions of walk-increments. It is shown that the particles undergo
anomalous, enhanced diffusion for D_F < 2, the diffusion is dominated by the
finite escape rate. Diffusion for D_F > 2 is normal for large times, enhanced
though for small and intermediate times. In particular, it follows that
fractals generated by a particular class of self-organized criticality (SOC)
models give rise to enhanced diffusion. The analytical results are illustrated

Researcher as Artist/Artist as Researcher
This is a postmodern article that is nontraditional in its form, content, and mode of representation. Upon recognizing that we share interests and common experiences as artists, we decided to collect life history information from each other about our artistic experiences. Thus we have become, simultaneously, "the researched" and "the re searcher." In these conversations, we explore the ways in which we were each guided by our past, very strong aesthetic and artistic experiences. Keeping it in the family: Parental influences on young people's attitudes to police
Prior research finds young people are less satisfied with police than their older counterparts. Despite this, our understanding of youth attitudes to police is limited, as most research has focused on adult attitudes to police. This study adds to our understanding by examining the influence of parent–child dynamics on youth attitudes to police. We predict that youth attitudes to police will be influenced by their parents’ attitudes. A survey of 540 school students in South East Queensland reveals that perceived parental attitudes to police are associated with youth attitudes to police. However, this effect is partially mediated by maternal, but not paternal attachment. These findings suggest that youth attitudes to police are not simply influenced by contact with police and delinquency, but that familial context is important. Consequently, our theoretical understanding of youth attitudes to police must move beyond a focus upon police contact and delinquency
