    Bar shoes and ambient temperature are risk factors for exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in Thoroughbred racehorses

    Reasons for performing study Ambient temperature has been identified as a risk factor for exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) in racing Thoroughbreds. This warranted a more expansive investigation of climatic conditions on the incidence and severity of EIPH. The impact of other variables such as the type of bit used, tongue ties and nonstandard shoes has not been reported and also warrant investigation. Objectives To examine the effect of various climatic variables as contributing risk factors for EIPH. Other previously uninvestigated variables as well as standard track and population factors will also be examined. Study design Cross-sectional study. Methods Thoroughbred racehorses competing at metropolitan racetracks in Perth, Western Australia were examined 30–200 min post race with tracheobronchoscopy. Examination took place at 48 race meetings over a 12 month period. Examinations were graded (0–4), independently by two experienced veterinarians. Univariable analyses were performed and variables with a P<0.25 were entered into a multivariable logistic regression analysis. The analysis was performed twice using the presence of blood (EIPH grade 0 vs. grades ≥1) and EIPH grades ≤1 vs. EIPH grades ≥2 as dependent variables. Results Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage was diagnosed in 56.6% of observations. Lower ambient temperature was significantly associated with EIPH grades ≥1 (OR 0.95; 95% CI 0.93–0.98) and EIPH grades ≥2 (OR 0.97; 95% CI 0.94–1.0). Bar shoes were significantly associated with EIPH grades ≥1 (OR 6.35; 95% CI 2.17–18.54) and EIPH grades ≥2 (OR 2.72; 95% CI 1.3–5.68). Increasing race distance was significantly associated with EIPH grade ≥1 and increasing lifetime starts was significantly associated with EIPH grade ≥2. Conclusions Ambient temperature is a risk factor for EIPH in Thoroughbred racehorses, with lower temperatures associated with increased risk. Bar shoes are a novel risk factor for EIPH in this population

    "Go George" (GIPTN) - a quality public transport system, elements for consideration

    The paper provides an overview of the approach adopted for the Go George Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) project. It discusses some of the reasoning and decisions taken, and the processes followed in getting the GIPTN operational. It outlines some of the project strengths and weaknesses, as well as some of the successes and failures. The transformation approach adopted for George, while appropriate in most respects at the time, was difficult to implement, and from this has come suggestions as to how to do it differently in future. There is however consensus that there is a definite need to shift from the current mini-bus type service model into the formal public transport realm, as it brings with it significant socio-economic benefits. The Go George system comprises a network of main and community routes operating within the built urban areas of George. Thus, offering a conventional scheduled public transport network operating between 14-18 hours per day at varying frequency levels, that makes use of a mixed bus fleet that allows for service optimisation (using mostly the smaller vehicles during off-peak times, for example) and operations cost (thus subsidy) minimisation.     "Go George" (GIPTN) : provision of public transport fixed infrastructure, and move towards providing universal access compliant pedestrian environments

    The paper discusses the approach adopted for the development of fixed infrastructure for the George Integrated Public Transport Network (GIPTN) or as it is known by the public, the Go George system, as provided for in terms of the NLTA. An ?infrastructure light? ?4-stage? approach was adopted for the provision of the required fixed infrastructure, with attention placed on the Stage 3 activities which deals more specifically, leading to the development of new bus stop design guidelines, with particular attention to the ?kerbside? passenger / pedestrian environment. It is in this regard that it was necessary to undertake considerable research into international practices (not described in this paper), and find adaptable solutions for the George situation, and which can be used more widely by others. Central to much of this is the issue of Universal Access Design for which there is a scarcity of local standards and guidelines, and the emphasis to be placed on urban modal priority in future. The subject is a wide ranging, thus the paper is a mere introduction, but one that should be of considerable interest to many, particularly so as it challenges the traditional ?road designer? to respond differently.     Cryptococcus neoformans ex vivo capsule size is associated with intracranial pressure and host immune response in HIV-associated cryptococcal meningitis

    &lt;p&gt;Background. The Cryptococcus neoformans polysaccharide capsule is a well-characterised virulence factor with immunomodulatory properties. The organism and/or shed capsule is postulated to raise intracranial pressure(ICP) in cryptococcal meningitis(CM) by mechanical obstruction of cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) outflow. Little is known regarding capsule phenotype in human cryptococcosis. We investigated the relationship of ex vivo CSF capsular phenotype with ICP and CSF immune response, as well as in vitro phenotype.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Methods. 134 HIV-infected Ugandan adults with CM had serial lumbar punctures with measurement of CSF opening pressures, quantitative cultures, ex vivo capsule size and shedding, viscosity, and CSF cytokines. 108 had complete data. Induced capsular size and shedding were measured in vitro for 48 C. neoformans isolates.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results. Cryptococcal strains producing larger ex vivo capsules in the baseline(pre-treatment) CSF correlated with higher ICP(P=.02), slower rate of fungal clearance(P=.02), and paucity of CSF inflammation, including decreased CSF white blood cell(WBC) count(P&#60;.001), interleukin(IL)-4(P=.02), IL-6(P=.01), IL-7(P=.04), IL-8(P=.03), and interferon-gamma(P=.03). CSF capsule shedding did not correlate with ICP. On multivariable analysis, capsule size remained independently associated with ICP. Ex vivo capsular size and shedding did not correlate with that of the same isolates grown in vitro.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;P&gt;Conclusions. Cryptococcal capsule size ex vivo is an important contributor to virulence in human cryptococcal meningitis.&lt;/P&gt

    Absence of a dose-rate effect in the transformation of C3H 10T1/2 cells by α-particles

    The findings of Hill et al. (1984) on the greatly enhanced transformation frequencies at very low dose rates of fission neutrons induced us to perform an analogous study with -particles at comparable dose rates. Transformation frequencies were determined with γ-rays at high dose rate (0·5 Gy/min), and with -particles at high (0·2 Gy/min) and at low dose rates (0·83-2·5 mGy/min) in the C3H 10T1/2 cell system. α-particles were substantially more effective than γ-rays, both for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation at high and low dose rates. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation was of similar magnitude, and ranged from about 3 at an -particle dose of 2 Gy to values of the order of 10 at 0·25 Gy. In contrast to the experiments of Hill et al. (1984) with fission neutrons, no increased transformation frequencies were observed when the -particle dose was protracted over several hours

    Synthesis of boronic ester γ‐lactam building blocks

    Saturated heterocycles are found widely in biologically active compounds such as medicinal drugs and agrochemicals. However, boronic acid‐derived building blocks for these structures have limited availability, particularly in comparison to heteroaromatic boronic acids. We report the preparation of boronic ester γ‐lactams through a Cu‐catalysed conjugate borylation‐cyclisation protocol. Using a chiral catalyst, this can be performed in high enantioselectivity. Exploration of the further transformations of these reagents suggest that the boronic esters have much potential as chemical building blocks

    Evolution of density perturbations in a realistic universe

    Prompted by the recent more precise determination of the basic cosmological parameters and growing evidence that the matter-energy content of the universe is now dominated by dark energy and dark matter we present the general solution of the equation that describes the evolution of density perturbations in the linear approximation. It turns out that as in the standard CDM model the density perturbations grow very slowly during the radiation dominated epoch and their amplitude increases by a factor of about 4000 in the matter and later dark energy dominated epoch of expansion of the universe.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure

    Particle-Like Description in Quintessential Cosmology

    Assuming equation of state for quintessential matter: p=w(z)ρp=w(z)\rho, we analyse dynamical behaviour of the scale factor in FRW cosmologies. It is shown that its dynamics is formally equivalent to that of a classical particle under the action of 1D potential V(a)V(a). It is shown that Hamiltonian method can be easily implemented to obtain a classification of all cosmological solutions in the phase space as well as in the configurational space. Examples taken from modern cosmology illustrate the effectiveness of the presented approach. Advantages of representing dynamics as a 1D Hamiltonian flow, in the analysis of acceleration and horizon problems, are presented. Copyright @ 2011 Elsevier B.V.The fate and behaviour of two groups of endocrine disrupting chemicals, steroid estrogens and nonylphenol ethoxylates, have been evaluated during the anaerobic digestion of primary and mixed sewage sludge under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Digestion occurred over six retention times, in laboratory scale reactors, treating sludges collected from a sewage treatment works in the United Kingdom. It has been established that sludge concentrations of both groups of compounds demonstrated temporal variations and that concentrations in mixed sludge were influenced by the presence of waste activated sludge as a result of transformations during aerobic treatment. The biodegradation of total steroid estrogens was >50% during primary sludge digestion with lower removals observed for mixed sludge, which reflected bulk organic solids removal efficiencies. The removal of nonylphenol ethoxylates was greater in mixed sludge digestion (>58%) compared with primary sludge digestion and did not reflect bulk organic removal efficiencies. It is apparent that anaerobic digestion reduces the concentrations of these compounds, and would therefore be expected to confer a degree of protection against exposure and transfer of both groups of compounds to the receiving/re-use environment.Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, and EPSRC

    WMAP constraints on scalar-tensor cosmology and the variation of the gravitational constant

    We present observational constraints on a scalar-tensor gravity theory by χ2\chi^2 test for CMB anisotropy spectrum. We compare the WMAP temperature power spectrum with the harmonic attractor model, in which the scalar field has its harmonic effective potential with curvature β\beta in the Einstein conformal frame and the theory relaxes toward Einstein gravity with time. We found that the present value of the scalar coupling, i.e. the present level of deviation from Einstein gravity (α02)(\alpha_0^2), is bounded to be smaller than 5×1047β5\times 10^{-4-7\beta} (2σ2\sigma), and 1027β10^{-2-7\beta} (4σ4\sigma) for 0<β<0.450< \beta<0.45. This constraint is much stronger than the bound from the solar system experiments for large β\beta models, i.e., β>0.2\beta> 0.2 and 0.3 in 2σ2\sigma and 4σ4\sigma limits, respectively. Furthermore, within the framework of this model, the variation of the gravitational constant at the recombination epoch is constrained as G(z=zrec)G0/G0<0.05(2σ)|G(z=z_{rec})-G_0|/G_0 < 0.05(2\sigma), and 0.23(4σ)0.23(4\sigma).Comment: 7 page
