Search for energetic cosmic axions utilizing terrestrial/celestial magnetic fields
Orbiting -detectors combined with the magnetic field of the Earth or
the Sun can work parasitically as cosmic axion telescopes. The relatively short
field lengths allow the axion-to-photon conversion to be coherent for
eV, if the axion kinetic energy is above
keV (Earth's field), or, MeV (Sun's field), allowing thus to search
for axions from annihilations, from supernova explosions, etc. With a
detector angular resolution of , a more efficient sky survey for
energetic cosmic axions passing {\it through the Sun} can be performed. Axions
or other axion-like particles might be created by the interaction of the cosmic
radiation with the Sun, similarly to the axion searches in accelerator beam
dump experiments; the enormous cosmic energy combined with the built-in
coherent Primakoff effect might provide a sensitive detection scheme, being out
of reach with accelerators. The axion signal will be an excess in -rays
coming either from a specific celestial place behind the Sun, e.g. the Galactic
Center, or, from any other direction in the sky being associated with a violent
astrophysical event, e.g. a supernova. Earth bound detectors are also of
potential interest. The axion scenario also applies to other stars or binary
systems in the Universe, in particular to those with superstrong magnetic

The Effectiveness of the ASOS, MMTS, Gill, and CRS Air Temperature Radiation Shields*
Periodic upgrades of air temperature measurement systems in surface weather station networks cause data discontinuities. From a climatological viewpoint, it is necessary to evaluate the air temperature data discontinuities when air temperature radiation shields are upgraded. This study was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of four common air temperature radiation shields including the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), the Maximum–Minimum Temperature System (MMTS), the Gill, and the Cotton Region Shelter (CRS) shields. The solar radiation shielding effectiveness for each shield under typical grass ground surface and different artificial surfaces (black, white, and aluminum) were investigated. The shield effectiveness was evaluated by measuring the interior solar irradiance and the inner surface temperatures of radiation shields. Parabolic curves describe the fraction of solar radiation entering shields, which increased as the solar reflectivity of the underlying surface increased. The rank of solar radiation shield effectiveness was ASOS CRS MMTS Gill (i.e., total interior solar irradiance loading in relative terms was ASOS:CRS:MMTS:Gill 1:1.3:1.7:2.5), under typical grass surface conditions. The increase in interior solar irradiance from the typical grass surface to the white surface went up by a factor of 1.2, 2.3, 1.6, and 1.9, respectively, for the ASOS, MMTS, Gill, and CRS shields. The ASOS shield had an obvious drawback for the infrared radiation effectiveness due to using the chilled mirror heating/cooling system as the dewpoint temperature measuring system located in the middle portion of the shield. The rank of the infrared radiation shielding effectiveness was CRS MMTS Gill ASOS during daytime and Gill MMTS CRS ASOS during nighttime
Micron-sized atom traps made from magneto-optical thin films
We have produced magnetic patterns suitable for trapping and manipulating
neutral atoms on a m length scale. The required patterns are made in
Co/Pt thin films on a silicon substrate, using the heat from a focussed laser
beam to induce controlled domain reversal. In this way we draw lines and
"paint" shaped areas of reversed magnetization with sub-micron resolution.
These structures produce magnetic microtraps above the surface that are
suitable for holding rubidium atoms with trap frequencies as high as ~1 MHz.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Diffuse inverse Compton and synchrotron emission from dark matter annihilations in galactic satellites
Annihilating dark matter particles produce roughly as much power in electrons
and positrons as in gamma ray photons. The charged particles lose essentially
all of their energy to inverse Compton and synchrotron processes in the
galactic environment. We discuss the diffuse signature of dark matter
annihilations in satellites of the Milky Way (which may be optically dark with
few or no stars), providing a tail of emission trailing the satellite in its
orbit. Inverse Compton processes provide X-rays and gamma rays, and synchrotron
emission at radio wavelengths might be seen. We discuss the possibility of
detecting these signals with current and future observations, in particular
EGRET and GLAST for the gamma rays.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
The Role of Subclass Switching in the Pathogenesis of Endemic Pemphigus Foliaceus
Endemic pemphigus foliaceus, like the sporadic form seen in the developed world, is mediated by IgG antibodies to desmoglein-1. We studied an endemic focus in Limao Verde, Brazil, where disease prevalence is 3.4%. We previously detected IgG antibodies to desmoglein-1 in 97% of patients, but also in 55% of normal subjects in the endemic focus, with progressively lower levels in normal subjects in surrounding areas. An environmental trigger is hypothesized to explain these and other findings. In this study we sought to determine if patients and enzyme-linked-immunosorbent-assay-positive normal subjects in Limao Verde differ in IgG subclass response to desmoglein-1. We developed a sensitive and specific subclass enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using recombinant desmoglein-1 and standardized the assay to enable comparability between the four subclasses. We found that normal subjects have an IgG1 and IgG4 response, whereas patients have similar levels of IgG1 but a mean 19.3-fold higher IgG4 response. Patients in remission have a weak IgG4 response, and a 74.3-fold higher IgG4 response is associated with active disease. Finally, in five patients in whom we had blood samples from both before and after the onset of clinical disease, a mean 103.08-fold rise in IgG4 was associated with onset of clinical disease, but only a mean 3.45-fold rise in IgG1. These results suggest that the early antibody response in normal subjects living in the endemic area and in patients before the onset of clinical disease is mainly IgG1. Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Lepton Flavor Violation
A non-universal interaction, which involves only the third family leptons
induces lepton flavor violating couplings and contributes to the anomalous
magnetic moment of muon. In this paper, we study the effects of non-universal
interaction on muon (g-2) and rare decay by using an
effective lagrangian technique, and a phenomenological model where
couples only to the third family lepton. We find that the deviation
from the theory can be explained and the induced rate
could be very close to the current experimental limit. In the model,

Dynamics of D1-brane in I-brane Background
This paper is devoted to the study of the effective field theory description
of the probe D1-brane in the background of the system of two stacks of
fivebranes in type IIB theory that intersect on . We study the
properties of the Dirac-Born-Infeld action for D1-brane moving in this
background. We will argue that this action is invariant under an additional
symmetry in the near horizon limit and that this new symmetry is closely
related to the enhanced symmetry of the I-brane background considered recently
in [hep-th/0508025]. We also solve explicitly the equation of motion of

Holographic Gauge Theories in Background Fields and Surface Operators
We construct a new class of supersymmetric surface operators in N=4 SYM and
find the corresponding dual supergravity solutions. We show that the insertion
of the surface operator - which is given by a WZW model supported on the
surface - appears by integrating out the localized degrees of freedom along the
surface which arise microscopically from a D3/D7 brane intersection.
Consistency requires constructing N=4 SYM in the D7 supergravity background and
not in flat space. This enlarges the class of holographic gauge theories dual
to string theory backgrounds to gauge theories in non-trivial supergravity
backgrounds. The dual Type IIB supergravity solutions we find reveal - among
other features - that the holographic dual gauge theory does indeed live in the

Magnetic field diagnostics and spatio-temporal variability of the solar transition region
Magnetic field diagnostics of the transition region from the chromosphere to
the corona faces us with the problem that one has to apply extreme UV
spectro-polarimetry. While for coronal diagnostic techniques already exist
through infrared coronagraphy above the limb and radio observations on the
disk, for the transition region one has to investigate extreme UV observations.
However, so far the success of such observations has been limited, but there
are various projects to get spectro-polarimetric data in the extreme UV in the
near future. Therefore it is timely to study the polarimetric signals we can
expect for such observations through realistic forward modeling.
We employ a 3D MHD forward model of the solar corona and synthesize the
Stokes I and Stokes V profiles of C IV 1548 A. A signal well above 0.001 in
Stokes V can be expected, even when integrating for several minutes in order to
reach the required signal-to-noise ratio, despite the fact that the intensity
in the model is rapidly changing (just as in observations). Often this
variability of the intensity is used as an argument against transition region
magnetic diagnostics which requires exposure times of minutes. However, the
magnetic field is evolving much slower than the intensity, and thus when
integrating in time the degree of (circular) polarization remains rather
constant. Our study shows the feasibility to measure the transition region
magnetic field, if a polarimetric accuracy on the order of 0.001 can be

Prospective Registry Trial Assessing the Use of Magnetic Seeds to Locate Clipped Nodes After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer Patients
Background Targeted axillary dissection (TAD) involves locating and removing both clipped nodes and sentinel nodes for assessment of the axillary response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) by clinically node-positive breast cancer patients. Initial reports described radioactive seeds used for localization, which makes the technique difficult to implement in some settings. This trial was performed to determine whether magnetic seeds can be used to locate clipped axillary lymph nodes for removal. Methods This prospective registry trial enrolled patients who had biopsy-proven node-positive disease with a clip placed in the node and treatment with NAC. A magnetic seed was placed under ultrasound guidance in the clipped node after NAC. All the patients underwent TAD. Results Magnetic seeds were placed in 50 patients by 17 breast radiologists. All the patients had successful seed placement at the first attempt (mean time for localization was 6.1 min; range 1-30 min). The final position of the magnetic seed was within the node (n = 44, 88%), in the cortex (n = 3, 6%), less than 3 mm from the node (n = 2, 4%), or by the clip when the node could not be adequately visualized (n = 1, 2%). The magnetic seed was retrieved at surgery from all the patients. In 49 (98%) of the 50 cases, the clip and magnetic seed were retrieved from the same node. Surgeons rated the transcutaneous and intraoperative localization as easy for 43 (86%) of the 50 cases. No device-related adverse events occurred. Conclusions Localization and selective removal of clipped nodes can be accomplished safely and effectively using magnetic seeds
