Loschmidt echo and stochastic-like quantum dynamics of nano-particles
We investigate time evolution of prepared vibrational state (system) coupled
to a reservoir with dense spectrum of its vibrational states. We assume that
the reservoir has an equidistant spectrum, and the system - reservoir coupling
matrix elements are independent of the reservoir states. The analytical
solution manifests three regimes of the evolution for the system: (I) weakly
damped oscillations; (II) multicomponent Loschmidt echo in recurrence cycles;
(III) overlapping recurrence cycles. We find the characteristic critical values
of the system - reservoir coupling constant for the transitions between these
regimes. Stochastic dynamics occurs in the regime (III) due to inevoidably in
any real system coarse graining of time or energy measurements, or initial
condition uncertainty. Even though a specific toy model is investigated here,
when properly interpreted it yields quite reasonable description for a variety
of physically relevant phenomena.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Effect of the tether length upon TruceâSmiles rearrangement reactions
post-printThis report examines the effect of substrate design upon the TruceâSmiles rearrangement, an intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction. The length of the molecular spacer that tethers the carbanion nucleophile to the substituted benzene ring was found to have a strong influence on the ability of the substrate to undergo the reaction successfully. Our experimental results show highest yield of desired aryl migration product for substrates designed with a 3âatom tether, which proceed through a 5âmembered spirocyclic intermediate. The results are interpreted in comparison with a survey of TruceâSmiles rearrangements described in the literature and found to be consistent. Computational studies support the observed reactivity trend and suggest an explanation of a favorable combination of ring strain and electrostatic repulsion leading to optimal reactivity of the substrate designed with a 3âatom tether. Mental health professionals' use of the ICD-11 classification of impulse control disorders and behavioral addictions: An international field study
Background and aims
The ICD-11 chapter on mental, behavioral and neurodevelopmental disorders contains new controversial diagnoses including compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD), intermittent explosive disorder (IED) and gaming disorder. Using a vignette-based methodology, this field study examined the ability of mental health professionals (MHPs) to apply the new ICD-11 diagnostic requirements for impulse control disorders, which include CSBD and IED, and disorders due to addictive behaviors, which include gaming disorder, compared to the previous ICD-10 guidelines.
Methods
Across eleven comparisons, members of the WHO's Global Clinical Practice Network (N = 1,090) evaluated standardized case descriptions that were designed to test key differences between the diagnostic guidelines of ICD-11 and ICD-10.
Results
The ICD-11 outperformed the ICD-10 in the accuracy of diagnosing impulse control disorders and behavioral addictions in most comparisons, while the ICD-10 was not superior in any. The superiority of the ICD-11 was particularly clear where new diagnoses had been added to the classification system or major revisions had been made. However, the ICD-11 outperformed the ICD-10 only in a minority of comparisons in which mental health professionals were asked to evaluate cases with non-pathological high involvement in rewarding behaviors.
Discussion and Conclusions
Overall, the present study indicates that the ICD-11 diagnostic requirements represent an improvement over the ICD-10 guidelines. However, additional efforts, such as training programs for MHPs and possible refinements of diagnostic guidance, are needed to avoid over-diagnosis of people who are highly engaged in a repetitive and rewarding behavior but below the threshold for a disorder
First results from the CRESST-III low-mass dark matter program
The CRESST experiment is a direct dark matter search which aims to measure
interactions of potential dark matter particles in an earth-bound detector.
With the current stage, CRESST-III, we focus on a low energy threshold for
increased sensitivity towards light dark matter particles. In this manuscript
we describe the analysis of one detector operated in the first run of
CRESST-III (05/2016-02/2018) achieving a nuclear recoil threshold of 30.1eV.
This result was obtained with a 23.6g CaWO crystal operated as a cryogenic
scintillating calorimeter in the CRESST setup at the Laboratori Nazionali del
Gran Sasso (LNGS). Both the primary phonon/heat signal and the simultaneously
emitted scintillation light, which is absorbed in a separate
silicon-on-sapphire light absorber, are measured with highly sensitive
transition edge sensors operated at ~15mK. The unique combination of these
sensors with the light element oxygen present in our target yields sensitivity
to dark matter particle masses as low as 160MeV/c.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
Being Focused: When the Purpose of Inference Matters for Model Selection
In contrast to conventional model selection criteria, the Focused Information Criterion (FIC) allows for purpose-specific choice of models. This accommodates the idea that one kind of model might be highly appropriate for inferences on a particular parameter, but not for another. Ever since its development, the FIC has been increasingly applied in the realm of statistics, but this concept appears to be virtually unknown in the economic literature. Using a classical example and data for 35 U.S. industry sectors (1960-2005), this paper provides for an illustration of the FIC and a demonstration of its usefulness in empirical applications
Understanding Sectoral Differences in Downward Real Wage Rigidity: Workforce Composition, Institutions, Technology and Competition
This paper examines whether differences in wage rigidity across sectors can be explained by differences in workforce composition, competition, technology and wage-bargaining institutions. We adopt the measure of downward real wage rigidity (DRWR) developed by Dickens and Goette (2006) and rely on a large administrative matched employer-employee dataset for Belgium over the period 1990-2002. Firstly, our results indicate that DRWR is significantly higher for white-collar workers and lower for older workers and for workers with higher earnings and bonuses. Secondly, beyond labour force composition effects, sectoral differences in DRWR are related to competition, firm size, technology and wage bargaining institutions. We find that wages are more rigid in more competitive sectors, in labour-intensive sectors, and in sectors with predominant centralised wage setting at the sector level as opposed to firm-level wage agreements
Th17-related cytokines: new players in the control of chronic intestinal inflammation
Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), the main forms of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in man, are thought to be caused by an excessive and poorly controlled immune response that is directed against components of the normal microflora. The exact sequence of events by which this pathological process is triggered and maintained is not fully understood, but studies in experimental models of IBD and data emerging from recent clinical trials indicate that T cell-derived cytokines are crucial mediators of the tissue damage. Although CD and UC have been traditionally considered two typical examples of T helper (Th)1 or Th2-associated disease respectively, it is now known that CD- and UC-related inflammation is also marked by enhanced production of cytokines made by a distinct subset of Th cells, termed Th17 cells. Th17 cytokines can have both tissue-protective and inflammatory effects in the gut and there is evidence that Th17 cells can alter their cytokine program according to the stimuli received and convert into Th1-producing cells. These novel findings have contributed to advancing our understanding of mechanisms of gut tissue damage and open new avenues for development of therapeutic strategies in IBD
Sectoral Differences in Wage Freezes and Wage Cuts : Evidence from a New Firm Survey
The paper provides evidence concerning incidence and sources of nominal wage rigidity in services and manufacturing, using a new and large employer survey on wage and price setting behaviour for Germany. We observe that wage freezes are more frequent in services than in manufacturing, whereas wage cuts are less frequent. The significant sector gaps do not vanish after controlling for relevant firm characteristics influencing the incidence of wage freezes and wage cuts, notably coverage by collective agreements and the degree of price competition on the product market. An analysis of firmsâ view on the reasons preventing wage cuts suggests that specific fear of excess worker turnover could explain distinct wage setting behaviour in services
