Is Task-Irrelevant Learning Really Task-Irrelevant?
In the present study we address the question of whether the learning of task-irrelevant stimuli found in the paradigm of task-irrelevant learning (TIPL) [1]–[9] is truly task irrelevant. To test the hypothesis that associations that are beneficial to task-performance may develop between the task-relevant and task-irrelevant stimuli, or the task-responses and the task-irrelevant stimuli, we designed a new procedure in which correlations between the presentation of task-irrelevant motion stimuli and the identity of task-targets or task-responses were manipulated. We found no evidence for associations developing between the learned (task-irrelevant) motion stimuli and the targets or responses to the letter identification task used during training. Furthermore, the conditions that had the greatest correlations between stimulus and response showed the least amount of TIPL. On the other hand, TIPL was found in conditions of greatest response uncertainty and with the greatest processing requirements for the task-relevant stimuli. This is in line with our previously published model that suggests that task-irrelevant stimuli benefit from the spill-over of learning signals that are released due to processing of task-relevant stimuli

Physics Performance Report for PANDA Strong Interaction Studies with Antiprotons
To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be build. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the-art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identifcation of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. Properties of M31. II: A Cepheid disk sample derived from the first year of PS1 PAndromeda data
We present a sample of Cepheid variable stars towards M31 based on the first
year of regular M31 observations of the PS1 survey in the r_P1 and i_P1
filters. We describe the selection procedure for Cepheid variable stars from
the overall variable source sample and develop an automatic classification
scheme using Fourier decomposition and the location of the instability strip.
We find 1440 fundamental mode (classical \delta) Cep stars, 126 Cepheids in the
first overtone mode, and 147 belonging to the Population II types. 296 Cepheids
could not be assigned to one of these classes and 354 Cepheids were found in
other surveys. These 2009 Cepheids constitute the largest Cepheid sample in M31
known so far and the full catalog is presented in this paper. We briefly
describe the properties of our sample in its spatial distribution throughout
the M31 galaxy, in its age properties, and we derive an apparent
period-luminosity relation (PLR) in our two bands. The Population I Cepheids
nicely follow the dust pattern of the M31 disk, whereas the 147 Type II
Cepheids are distributed throughout the halo of M31. We outline the time
evolution of the star formation in the major ring found previously and find an
age gradient. A comparison of our PLR to previous results indicates a curvature
term in the PLR
Ferropericlase inclusions in ultradeep diamonds from Sao Luiz (Brazil): High Li abundances and diverse Li-isotope and trace element compositions suggest an origin from a subduction mélange
The most remarkable feature of the inclusion suite in ultradeep alluvial and kimberlitic diamonds from Sao Luiz (Juina area in Brazil) is the enormous range in Mg# [100xMg/(Mg + Fe)] of the ferropericlases (fper). The Mg-richer ferropericlases are from the boundary to the lower mantle or from the lower mantle itself when they coexist with ringwoodite or Mg- perovskite (bridgmanite). This, however, is not an explanation for the more Fe-rich members and a lowermost mantle or a “D” layer origin has been proposed for them. Such a suggested ultra-deep origin separates the Fe-rich fper-bearing diamonds from the rest of the Sao Luiz ultradeep diamond inclusion suite, which also contains Ca-rich phases. These are now thought to have an origin in the uppermost lower mantle and in the transition zone and to belong either to a peridotitic or mafic (subducted oceanic crust) protolith lithology. We analysed a new set of more Fe-rich ferropericlase inclusions from 10 Sao Luiz ultradeep alluvial diamonds for their Li isotope composition by solution MC-ICP-MS (multi collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry), their major and minor elements by EPMA (electron probe micro-analyser) and their Li-contents by SIMS (secondary ion mass spectrometry), with the aim to understand the origin of the ferropericlase protoliths. Our new data confirm the wide range of ferropericlase Mg# that were reported before and augment the known lack of correlation between major and minor elements. Four pooled ferropericlase inclusions from four diamonds provided sufficient material to determine for the first time their Li isotope composition, which ranges from δ7Li + 9.6 ‰ to −3.9 ‰. This wide Li isotopic range encompasses that of serpentinized ocean floor peridotites including rodingites and ophicarbonates, fresh and altered MORB (mid ocean ridge basalt), seafloor sediments and of eclogites. This large range in Li isotopic composition, up to 5 times higher than ‘primitive upper mantle’ Li-abundances, and an extremely large and incoherent range in Mg# and Cr, Ni, Mn, Na contents in the ferropericlase inclusions suggests that their protoliths were members of the above lithologies. This mélange of altered rocks originally contained a variety of carbonates (calcite, magnesite, dolomite, siderite) and brucite as the secondary products in veins and as patches and Ca-rich members like rodingites and ophicarbonates. Dehydration and redox reactions during or after deep subduction into the transition zone and the upper parts of the lower mantle led to the formation of diamond and ferropericlase inclusions with variable compositions and a predominance of the Ca-rich, high-pressure silicate inclusions. We suggest that the latter originated from peridotites, mafic rocks and sedimentary rocks as redox products between calcite and SiO2

Iodine monoxide at a clean marine coastal site: observations of high frequency variations and inhomogeneous distributions
The first in situ point observations of iodine monoxide (IO) at a clean marine site were made using a laser-induced fluorescence instrument deployed at Mace Head, Ireland in August 2007. IO mixing ratios of up to 49.8 pptv (equivalent to pmol mol<sup>−1</sup>; 1 s average) were observed at day-time low tide, well in excess of previous observed spatially-averaged maxima. A strong anti-correlation of IO mixing ratios with tide height was evident and the high time resolution of the observations showed IO peaked in the hour after low tide. The temporal delay in peak IO compared to low tide has not been observed previously but coincides with the time of peak aerosol number previously observed at Mace Head. <br><br> A long path-differential optical absorption spectroscopy instrument (with a 2 × 6.8 km folded path across Roundstone Bay) was also based at the site for 3 days during the point measurement observation period. Both instruments show similar temporal trends but the point measurements of IO are a factor of ~6–10 times greater than the spatially averaged IO mixing ratios, providing direct empirical evidence of the presence of inhomogeneities in the IO mixing ratio near the intertidal region
Coulomb Explosion and Thermal Spikes
A fast ion penetrating a solid creates a track of excitations. This can
produce displacements seen as an etched track, a process initially used to
detect energetic particles but now used to alter materials. From the seminal
papers by Fleischer et al. [Phys. Rev. 156, 353 (1967)] to the present [C.
Trautmann, S. Klaumunzer and H. Trinkaus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 3648 (2000)],
`Coulomb explosion' and thermal spike models are treated as conflicting models
for describing ion track effects. Here molecular dynamics simulations of
electronic-sputtering, a surface manifestation of ion track formation, show
that `Coulomb explosion' produces a `heat' spike so that these are early and
late aspects of the same process. Therefore, differences in scaling are due to
