    Effect of cryogenic irradiation on NERVA structural alloys

    Several alloys (Hastelloy X, AISI 347, A-286 bolts, Inconel 718, Al 7039-T63 and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn ELI) were irradiated in liquid nitrogen (140 R) to neutron fluences between 10 to the 17th power and 10 to the 19th power nvt (E greater than 1.0 Mev). After irradiation, tensile properties were obtained in liquid nitrogen without permitting any warmup except for some specimens which were annealed at 540 R. The usual trend of radiation damage typical for materials irradiated at and above room temperature was observed, such as an increase in strength and decrease in ductility. However, the damage at 140 R was greater because this temperature prevented the annealing of radiation-induced defects which occurs above 140 R

    BACKGROUND: Caffeine reportedly counteracts the suppression of hair shaft production by testosterone in organ-cultured male human hair follicles (HFs). OBJECTIVES: We aimed at investigating the impact of caffeine a) on additional key hair growth parameters, b) on major hair growth-regulatory growth factors and c) on male versus female HFs in the presence of testosterone. METHODS: Microdissected male and female human scalp HFs were treated in serum-free organ culture for 120 h with testosterone alone (0,5 mug/ml) or in combination with caffeine (0.005-0.0005%), and effects on hair shaft elongation, HF cycling (i.e. anagen-catagen transition), hair matrix keratinocyte proliferation and expression of a key catagen inducer, transforming growth factor beta2 (TGF-beta2), and anagen-prolonging insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) were evaluated by quantitative (immuno-) histomorphometry. Caffeine effects were further investigated in human outer root sheath keratinocytes (ORSK). RESULTS: Caffeine enhanced hair shaft elongation, prolonged anagen duration and stimulated hair matrix keratinocyte proliferation. Female HFs showed higher sensitivity to caffeine compared to male HFs. Caffeine counteracted testosterone-enhanced TGF-beta2 protein expression in male HFs. In female HFs, testosterone failed to induce TGF-beta2 expression, while caffeine reduced it. In male and female HFs, caffeine enhanced IGF-1 protein expression. In ORSK, caffeine stimulated cell proliferation, inhibited apoptosis/necrosis, up-regulated IGF-1 gene expression and protein secretion, while TGF-beta2 protein secretion was down-regulated. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals new growth-promoting effects of caffeine on human hair follicles of both genders at different (molecular, cellular and organ) levels.     Previous studies have shown that the size distributions of small clusters ( n<=40 n = number of atoms/cluster) generated by sputtering obey an inverse power law with an exponent between -8 and -4. Here we report electron microscopy studies of the size distributions of larger clusters ( n>=500) sputtered by high-energy ion impacts. These new measurements also yield an inverse power law, but one with an exponent of -2 and one independent of sputtering yield, indicating that the large clusters are produced when shock waves, generated by subsurface displacement cascades, ablate the surface

    Campylobacter Prevalence and Diversity in Antimicrobial Free and Conventionally Reared Market Swine

    The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter spp. among pigs raised antimicrobial free (ABF) and those raised conventionally. Bacterial isolation was done on-farm and at slaughter using conventional methods and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were done for 12 antimicrobials using Kirby-Bauer and epsilometric test (E-test) methods. All 14 herds were positive for Campylobacter. On-farm prevalence among ABF herds was 71% and 81% among conventional herd. In contrast, the prevalence among carcass swabs was higher among ABF herds than conventional herds with 60% and 29% respectively. There was significant reduction after chilling in all groups (p\u3c0.05). On-farm frequency of antimicrobial resistance was significantly higher among isolates from conventional herds than ABF (p\u3c0.05). In contrast frequency of resistance to five of the seven antimicrobials was higher among carcass swabs of ABF herds than conventional herds

    Measuring the impact of Ebola control measures in Sierra Leone.

    Between September 2014 and February 2015, the number of Ebola virus disease (EVD) cases reported in Sierra Leone declined in many districts. During this period, a major international response was put in place, with thousands of treatment beds introduced alongside other infection control measures. However, assessing the impact of the response is challenging, as several factors could have influenced the decline in infections, including behavior changes and other community interventions. We developed a mathematical model of EVD transmission, and measured how transmission changed over time in the 12 districts of Sierra Leone with sustained transmission between June 2014 and February 2015. We used the model to estimate how many cases were averted as a result of the introduction of additional treatment beds in each area. Examining epidemic dynamics at the district level, we estimated that 56,600 (95% credible interval: 48,300-84,500) Ebola cases (both reported and unreported) were averted in Sierra Leone up to February 2, 2015 as a direct result of additional treatment beds being introduced. We also found that if beds had been introduced 1 month earlier, a further 12,500 cases could have been averted. Our results suggest the unprecedented local and international response led to a substantial decline in EVD transmission during 2014-2015. In particular, the introduction of beds had a direct impact on reducing EVD cases in Sierra Leone, although the effect varied considerably between districts

    Synthesis and Catalytic Activity of (3,4-Diphenylcyclopentadienone)Iron Tricarbonyl Compounds in Transfer Hydrogenations and Dehydrogenations

    Four (3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone)iron tricarbonyl compounds were synthesized, and their activities in transfer hydrogenations of carbonyl compounds and transfer dehydrogenations of alcohols were explored and compared to those of the well-established [2,5-(SiMe3)2-3,4-(CH2)4(η4-C4C═O)]Fe(CO)3 (3). A new compound, [2,5-bis(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone]iron tricarbonyl (7), was the most active catalyst in both transfer hydrogenations and dehydrogenations, and compound 3 was the least active catalyst in transfer hydrogenations. Evidence was found for product inhibition of both 3 and 7 in a transfer dehydrogenation reaction, with the activity of 3 being more heavily affected. A monomeric iron hydride derived from 7 was spectroscopically observed during a transfer hydrogenation, and no diiron bridging hydrides were found under reductive or oxidative conditions. Initial results in the transfer hydrogenation of N-benzylideneaniline showed that 3 was a significantly less active catalyst in comparison to the (3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone)iron tricarbonyl compounds

    Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profile of Campylobacter isolated from conventional and antibiotic free swine farms in three geographic locations

    The prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Campylobacter were examined from swine reared in conventional and antimicrobial-free (ABF) production systems in three geographical locations: North Carolina (NC), Ohio (OH) and Wisconsin (WI). Methods: A total of 1500 pigs and 1930 carcass swab samples were evaluated for the prevalence of Campylobacter. Fecal samples from 662 pigs from NC (370 conventional farms and 292 ABF farms), 379 from OH (268 conventional and 111 ABF) and 459 from WI (160 conventional and 299 ABF) were included. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using agar dilution method against a panel of six antimicrobials
