    Observation of strong surface state effects in the nonlinear magneto-optical response of Ni(110)

    Spectroscopic magnetization induced optical Second Harmonic Generation (MSHG) measurements from a clean Ni(110) surface reveal strong resonance effects near 2.7 eV that can be attributed to the presence of an empty surface state.     A novel mutation in PTHLH in a family with a variable phenotype with brachydactyly, short stature, oligodontia and developmental delay

    Mutations in PTHLH (PTH-like hormone), cause brachydactyly type E (BDE) characterized by shortening of metacarpals, metatarsals and/or phalanges with short stature. In this report we describe three siblings and their mother with a novel heterozygous mutation c.25 T &gt; C, p.Trp9Arg in exon 2 of the PTHLH gene. Beside the known clinical features of PTHLH mutations all had a delay in speech and language development, unknown if this is related to the mutation. Patients with PTHLH mutation may have a variable phenotypic presentation.</p

    A spectral function tour of electron-phonon coupling outside the Migdal limit

    We simulate spectral functions for electron-phonon coupling in a filled band system - far from the asymptotic limit often assumed where the phonon energy is very small compared to the Fermi energy in a parabolic band and the Migdal theorem predicting 1+lambda quasiparticle renormalizations is valid. These spectral functions are examined over a wide range of parameter space through techniques often used in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Analyzing over 1200 simulations we consider variations of the microscopic coupling strength, phonon energy and dimensionality for two models: a momentum-independent Holstein model, and momentum-dependent coupling to a breathing mode phonon. In this limit we find that any `effective coupling', lambda_eff, inferred from the quasiparticle renormalizations differs from the microscopic dimensionless coupling characterizing these Hamiltonians, lambda, and could drastically either over- or under-estimate it depending on the particular parameters and model. In contrast, we show that perturbation theory retains good predictive power for low coupling and small momenta, and that the momentum-dependence of the self-energy can be revealed via the relationship between velocity renormalization and quasiparticle strength. Additionally we find that (although not strictly valid) it is often possible to infer the self-energy and bare electronic structure through a self-consistent Kramers-Kronig bare-band fitting; and also that through lineshape alone, when Lorentzian, it is possible to reliably extract the shape of the imaginary part of a momentum-dependent self-energy without reference to the bare-band.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures.     Genome-Wide Interaction Study of Omega-3 PUFAs and Other Fatty Acids on Inflammatory Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Health in the Framingham Heart Study

    Numerous genetic loci have been identified as being associated with circulating fatty acid (FA) levels and/or inflammatory biomarkers of cardiovascular health (e.g., C-reactive protein). Recently, using red blood cell (RBC) FA data from the Framingham Offspring Study, we conducted a genome-wide association study of over 2.5 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 22 RBC FAs (and associated ratios), including the four Omega-3 FAs (ALA, DHA, DPA, and EPA). Our analyses identified numerous causal loci. In this manuscript, we investigate the extent to which polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels moderate the relationship of genetics to cardiovascular health biomarkers using a genome-wide interaction study approach. In particular, we test for possible gene–FA interactions on 9 inflammatory biomarkers, with 2.5 million SNPs and 12 FAs, including all Omega-3 PUFAs. We identified eighteen novel loci, including loci which demonstrate strong evidence of modifying the impact of heritable genetics on biomarker levels, and subsequently cardiovascular health. The identified genes provide increased clarity on the biological functioning and role of Omega-3 PUFAs, as well as other common fatty acids, in cardiovascular health, and suggest numerous candidate loci for future replication and biological characterization

    An elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model for the rate-dependent behavior of polyvinylidene fluoride

    To model the engineering performance of components made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), the 3D elasto-viscoplastic Eindhoven glassy polymer (EGP) model is extended to describe the rate-dependent behavior of PVDF. Careful analysis of the intrinsic behavior of PVDF revealed that the postyield compressive response shows a strain rate-dependence that evolves with increasing deformation. The extension of the constitutive model captures the deformation-dependent evolution of the activation volume and the rate-factor, which describes the driving stress. Given the significant temperature-dependent behavior, the model has been characterized for different temperatures (23, 55 and 75 °C). The accuracy of the model has been validated by means of tension and creep experiments at these temperatures. The constitutive model is implemented in finite element simulations and the results are compared with the experiments. It is shown that the proposed model allows for an accurate prediction of the short- and long-term rate-dependent behavior of PVDF.</p
