    The Valence of Iron in CM Chondrite Serpentine as Measured by Synchrotron Xanes

    Fe-bearing phyllosilicates are the dominant product of aqueous alteration in carbonaceous chondrites, and serpentine is the most abundant phyllosilicate in CM2 chondrites that are the most abundant carbonaceous chondrite. Browning et al. predicted that Fe(3+)/(sum of Fe) ratios of serpentine in CM chondrites should change with progressive alteration. They proposed that progressive CM alteration is best monitored by evaluating the progress of Si and Fe3+ substitutions that necessarily attend the transition from end-member cronstedtite to serpentine. Their proposed Mineralogic Alteration Index, 2-(Fe(3+)/(2-Si)), was intended to highlight and utilize the relevant ex-change information in the stoichiometric phyllosilicate formulas based upon the coupled substitution of 2(Fe(3+), Al) = Si + (Mg, Fe(2+)...) in serpentine. The value of this ratio increases as alteration proceeds. We always wanted to directly test Browning s pre-diction through actual measurements of the Fe3+ con-tent of serpentine at the micron scale appropriate to EPMA analyses (Zega et al. have measured it at much finer scale), and this test can now be made using Synchrotron Radiation X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (SR-XANES). Thus, we have recently begun investigation with CMs that span a large portion of the range of observed aqueous alteration, and we first analyzed Murray, Nogoya, and ALH84029 by SR-XANES. However, we did not find clear correlation between Fe3+/(sum of Fe) ratios of serpentine and their alteration degrees. We thus analyzed serpentine in three more CMs and here report their Fe3+/(sum of Fe) ratios in comparison with our previous results

    Force chains and contact network topology in packings of elongated particles

    By means of contact dynamic simulations, we investigate the contact network topology and force chains in two-dimensional packings of elongated particles modeled by rounded-cap rectangles. The morphology of large packings of elongated particles in quasistatic equilibrium is complex due to the combined effects of local nematic ordering of the particles and orientations of contacts between particles. We show that particle elongation affects force distributions and force/fabric anisotropy via various local structures allowed by steric exclusions and the requirement of force balance. As a result, the force distributions become increasingly broader as particles become more elongated. Interestingly, the weak force network transforms from a passive stabilizing agent with respect to strong force chains to an active force-transmitting network for the whole system. The strongest force chains are carried by side/side contacts oriented along the principal stress direction.Comment: Soumis a Physical Review

    Sensitivity of tsunami data to the updip extent of the July 2021 Mw 8.2 Alaska earthquake

    A large tsunamigenic earthquake of magnitude Mw 8.2 occurred on the Alaska‐Aleutian subduction zone in July 2021. To reveal the characteristics of the event, we first applied spectral and wavelet analyses to the induced tsunami recorded both at the local and Pacific‐wide sea level observation networks. Because the earthquake was relatively deep (∼30 km), the resultant maximum tsunami amplitudes were only ∼5 and ∼50 cm in the open ocean and coastal area respectively. However, owing to the unique geological feature of the region, the tsunami had dominant periods of 57–73 min, which are longer than that typically generated by similar‐size megathrust earthquakes. Furthermore, we compared multiple source models inferred from various data sets and evaluated their performances in reconstructing the observed tsunami waveforms. The comparison results suggest that the up‐dip limit of the rupture area must be restricted at depth of ∼20 km to accurately reproduce the observed tsunami waveforms. Shallower slips beyond the prescribed limit led to an overestimation of the tsunami amplitude. This implies that the earthquake was unlikely to rupture the plate interface on the near trench section

    The Volume of some Non-spherical Horizons and the AdS/CFT Correspondence

    We calculate the volumes of a large class of Einstein manifolds, namely Sasaki-Einstein manifolds which are the bases of Ricci-flat affine cones described by polynomial embedding relations in C^n. These volumes are important because they allow us to extend and test the AdS/CFT correspondence. We use these volumes to extend the central charge calculation of Gubser (1998) to the generalized conifolds of Gubser, Shatashvili, and Nekrasov (1999). These volumes also allow one to quantize precisely the D-brane flux of the AdS supergravity solution. We end by demonstrating a relationship between the volumes of these Einstein spaces and the number of holomorphic polynomials (which correspond to chiral primary operators in the field theory dual) on the corresponding affine cone.Comment: 25 pp, LaTeX, 1 figure, v2: refs adde

    Ultrafast carrier relaxation in GaN, In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)N and an In_(0.05)Ga_(0.95)/In_(0.15)Ga_(0.85)N Multiple Quantum Well

    Room temperature, wavelength non-degenerate ultrafast pump/probe measurements were performed on GaN and InGaN epilayers and an InGaN multiple quantum well structure. Carrier relaxation dynamics were investigated as a function of excitation wavelength and intensity. Spectrally-resolved sub-picosecond relaxation due to carrier redistribution and QW capture was found to depend sensitively on the wavelength of pump excitation. Moreover, for pump intensities above a threshold of 100 microJ/cm2, all samples demonstrated an additional emission feature arising from stimulated emission (SE). SE is evidenced as accelerated relaxation (< 10 ps) in the pump-probe data, fundamentally altering the re-distribution of carriers. Once SE and carrier redistribution is completed, a slower relaxation of up to 1 ns for GaN and InGaN epilayers, and 660 ps for the MQW sample, indicates carrier recombination through spontaneous emission.Comment: submitted to Phys.     THERMODYNAMICS OF A BROWNIAN BRIDGE POLYMER MODEL IN A RANDOM ENVIRONMENT

    We consider a directed random walk making either 0 or +1+1 moves and a Brownian bridge, independent of the walk, conditioned to arrive at point bb on time TT. The Hamiltonian is defined as the sum of the square of increments of the bridge between the moments of jump of the random walk and interpreted as an energy function over the bridge connfiguration; the random walk acts as the random environment. This model provides a continuum version of a model with some relevance to protein conformation. The thermodynamic limit of the specific free energy is shown to exist and to be self-averaging, i.e. it is equal to a trivial --- explicitly computed --- random variable.
