    Free-field Representations and Geometry of some Gepner models

    The geometry of kKk^{K} Gepner model, where k+2=2Kk+2=2K is investigated by free-field representation known as "bc\bet\gm"-system. Using this representation it is shown directly that internal sector of the model is given by Landau-Ginzburg CK/Z2K\mathbb{C}^{K}/\mathbb{Z}_{2K}-orbifold. Then we consider the deformation of the orbifold by marginal anti-chiral-chiral operator. Analyzing the holomorphic sector of the deformed space of states we show that it has chiral de Rham complex structure of some toric manifold, where toric dates are given by certain fermionic screening currents. It allows to relate the Gepner model deformed by the marginal operator to the σ\sigma-model on CY manifold realized as double cover of PK−1\mathbb{P}^{K-1} with ramification along certain submanifold.Comment: LaTex, 14 pages, some acknowledgments adde

    Recent analysis suggests that the classical dynamics of a tachyon on an unstable D-brane is described by a scalar Born-Infeld type action with a runaway potential. The classical configurations in this theory at late time are in one to one correspondence with the configuration of a system of non-interacting (incoherent), non-rotating dust. We discuss some aspects of canonical quantization of this field theory coupled to gravity, and explore, following earlier work on this subject, the possibility of using the scalar field (tachyon) as the definition of time in quantum cosmology. At late `time' we can identify a subsector in which the scalar field decouples from gravity and we recover the usual Wheeler - de Witt equation of quantum gravity.Comment: LaTeX file, 24 page

    Turbulent flow in graphene

    We demonstrate the possibility of a turbulent flow of electrons in graphene in the hydrodynamic region, by calculating the corresponding turbulent probability density function. This is used to calculate the contribution of the turbulent flow to the conductivity within a quantum Boltzmann approach. We present theories for chains of cylindrical granules (Hertz potential with exponent n=2n=2) and of granules with other geometries (n>2n>2).     Exactly stable non-BPS spinors in heterotic string theory on tori

    Considering SO(32) heterotic string theory compactified on a torus of dimension 4 and less, stability of non-supersymmetric states is studied. A non-supersymmetric state with robust stability is constructed, and its exact stability is proven in a large region of moduli space against all the possible decay mechanisms allowed by charge conservation. Using various T-duality transform matrices, we translate various selection rules about conserved charges into simpler problems resembling partition and parity of integers. For heterotic string on T^4, we give a complete list of BPS atoms with elementary excitations, and we study BPS and non-BPS molecules with various binding energies. Using string-string duality, the results are interpreted in terms of Dirichlet-branes in type IIA string theory compactified on an orbifold limit of a K3 surface.Comment: 47 pages, 14 figures, LaTe

    Dilaton Stabilization and Inflation in the D-brane World

    We study the dilaton stabilization in the D-brane world in which a D-brane constitutes our universe. The dilaton can be stabilized due to the interplay between the D-brane tension and the negative scalar curvature of extra dimensions.     Gauge Invariant Action for the Open Bosonic String: Tachyon Action

    A gauge invariant action for the open bosonic string has been proposed in an earlier paper. We work out the consequences of this proposal for the lowest mode, viz. the tachyon. The action can be calculated for generic momenta, perturbatively, order by order in the tachyon field. For on shell tachyons we explicitly calculate the cubic action and show that it reproduces the correct equations of motion and coincides wih the β\beta function to the required order. The calculation is done in terms of bare fields with a finite cutoff, which is the original prescription. We also show that it is possible in some momentum regions to renormalize the theory and eliminate the cutoff dependence so that the continuum limit can be taken. After renormalization, the parameter RaR\over a is replaced by RLR\over L where RR is an IR cutoff, aa is the UV cutoff and LL is some renormalization scale. There is also some arbitrariness in the overall normalization due to the choice of regularization scheme - this does not affect on-shell quantities. We also rederive within this scheme, the action in the region of zero momentum, which gives the exact (tree level) tachyon potential.     Loop Variables and Gauge Invariance in (Open) Bosonic String Theory

    We give a simplified and more complete description of the loop variable approach for writing down gauge invariant equations of motion for the fields of the open string. A simple proof of gauge invariance to all orders is given. In terms of loop variables, the interacting equations look exactly like the free equations, but with a loop variable depending on an extra parameter, thus making it a band of finite width. The arguments for gauge invariance work exactly as in the free case. We show that these equations are Wilsonian RG equations with a finite world-sheet cutoff and that in the infrared limit, equivalence with the Callan-Symanzik β\beta-functions should ensure that they reproduce the on-shell scattering amplitudes in string theory. It is applied to the tachyon-photon system and the general arguments for gauge invariance can be easily checked to the order calculated. One can see that when there is a finite world sheet cutoff in place, even the U(1) invariance of the equations for the photon, involves massive mode contributions. A field redefinition involving the tachyon is required to get the gauge transformations of the photon into standard form.Comment: 20 pages, Late

    Is Low Alveolar Type II Cell SOD3 in the Lungs of Elderly Linked to the Observed Severity of COVID-19?

    Human lungs single cell RNA sequencing data from healthy donors (elderly and young; GEO accession number GSE122960) were analyzed to isolate and specifically study gene expression in alveolar type II cells. Co-localization of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 enables SARS-CoV 2 to enter the cells. Expression of these genes in the alveolar type II cells of elderly and young patients were comparable and therefore do not seem to be responsible for worse outcomes observed in COVID-19 affected elderly. In cells from the elderly, 263 genes were downregulated and 95 upregulated. SOD3 was identified as the top-ranked gene that was most down-regulated in the elderly. Other redox-active genes that were also downregulated in cells from the elderly included ATF4 and M2TA. ATF4, an ER stress sensor that defends lungs via induction of heme oxygenase 1. The study of downstream factors known to be induced by ATF4, according to Ingenuity Pathway AnalysisTM, identified 24 candidates. Twenty-one of these were significantly downregulated in the cells from the elderly. These downregulated candidates were subjected to enrichment using the Reactome Database identifying that in the elderly, the ability to respond to heme deficiency and the ATF4-dependent ability to respond to endoplasmic reticulum stress is significantly compromised. SOD3-based therapeutic strategies have provided beneficial results in treating lung disorders including fibrosis. The findings of this work propose the hypotheses that lung-specific delivery of SOD3/ATF4 related antioxidants may work in synergy with promising anti-viral drugs such as remdesivir to further improve COVID-19 outcomes in the elderly
