ELAN as flexible annotation framework for sound and image processing detectors
Annotation of digital recordings in humanities research still is, to a largeextend, a process that is performed manually. This paper describes the firstpattern recognition based software components developed in the AVATecH projectand their integration in the annotation tool ELAN. AVATecH (AdvancingVideo/Audio Technology in Humanities Research) is a project that involves twoMax Planck Institutes (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen,Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Halle) and two FraunhoferInstitutes (Fraunhofer-Institut fĂĽr Intelligente Analyse- undInformationssysteme IAIS, Sankt Augustin, Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute,Berlin) and that aims to develop and implement audio and video technology forsemi-automatic annotation of heterogeneous media collections as they occur inmultimedia based research. The highly diverse nature of the digital recordingsstored in the archives of both Max Planck Institutes, poses a huge challenge tomost of the existing pattern recognition solutions and is a motivation to makesuch technology available to researchers in the humanities
Nonlinearities and Effects of Transverse Beam Size in Beam Position Monitors (revised)
The fields produced by a long beam with a given transverse charge
distribution in a homogeneous vacuum chamber are studied. Signals induced by a
displaced finite-size beam on electrodes of a beam position monitor (BPM) are
calculated and compared to those produced by a pencil beam. The non-linearities
and corrections to BPM signals due to a finite transverse beam size are
calculated for an arbitrary chamber cross section. Simple analytical
expressions are given for a few particular transverse distributions of the beam
current in a circular or rectangular chamber. Of particular interest is a
general proof that in an arbitrary homogeneous chamber the beam-size

Electrophoresis of a polyelectrolyte through a nanopore
A hydrodynamic model for determining the electrophoretic speed of a
polyelectrolyte through a nanopore is presented. It is assumed that the speed
is determined by a balance of electrical and viscous forces arising from within
the pore and that classical continuum electrostatics and hydrodynamics may be
considered applicable. An explicit formula for the translocation speed as a
function of the pore geometry and other physical parameters is obtained and is
shown to be consistent with experimental measurements on DNA translocation
through nanopores in silicon membranes. Experiments also show a weak dependence
of the translocation speed on polymer length that is not accounted for by the
present model. It is hypothesized that this is due to secondary effects that

Dynamic regimes of hydrodynamically coupled self-propelling particles
We analyze the collective dynamics of self-propelling particles (spps) which
move at small Reynolds numbers including the hydrodynamic coupling to the
suspending solvent through numerical simulations. The velocity distribution
functions show marked deviations from Gaussian behavior at short times, and the
mean-square displacement at long times shows a transition from diffusive to
ballistic motion for appropriate driving mechanism at low concentrations. We
discuss the structures the spps form at long times and how they correlate to

Field experiments conducted on a silt loam soil with six culti-vars under four pH ranges (5.9-6.7, 5.7-6.5, 5.3-6.0 and 5.0-5.6) in-dicated significant tolerance of \u27Bedford\u27 and \u27Forrest\u27 under acid soil pH ranges. The two cultivars were superior to \u27Bragg\u27, \u27Braxton\u27, \u27Co-237\u27, and \u27Tracy M\u27 in 1981 and 1982 trials. However, lowering of pH to 4.6-5.4, 4.5-5.4, 4.1-5.1, and 3.8-4.5 resulted in nullified seed formation in all the cultivars
Correlated particle dynamics in concentrated quasi-two-dimensional suspensions
We investigate theoretically and experimentally how the hydrodynamically
correlated lateral motion of particles in a suspension confined between two
surfaces is affected by the suspension concentration. Despite the long range of
the correlations (decaying as 1/r^2 with the inter-particle distance r), the
concentration effect is present only at short inter-particle distances for
which the static pair correlation is nonuniform. This is in sharp contrast with
the effect of hydrodynamic screening present in unconfined suspensions, where
increasing the concentration changes the prefactor of the large-distance

Robust Algorithm to Generate a Diverse Class of Dense Disordered and Ordered Sphere Packings via Linear Programming
We have formulated the problem of generating periodic dense paritcle packings
as an optimization problem called the Adaptive Shrinking Cell (ASC) formulation
[S. Torquato and Y. Jiao, Phys. Rev. E {\bf 80}, 041104 (2009)]. Because the
objective function and impenetrability constraints can be exactly linearized
for sphere packings with a size distribution in -dimensional Euclidean space
, it is most suitable and natural to solve the corresponding ASC
optimization problem using sequential linear programming (SLP) techniques. We
implement an SLP solution to produce robustly a wide spectrum of jammed sphere
packings in for and with a diversity of disorder
and densities up to the maximally densities. This deterministic algorithm can
produce a broad range of inherent structures besides the usual disordered ones
with very small computational cost by tuning the radius of the {\it influence
sphere}. In three dimensions, we show that it can produce with high probability
a variety of strictly jammed packings with a packing density anywhere in the
wide range . We also apply the algorithm to generate various
disordered packings as well as the maximally dense packings for
and 6. Compared to the LS procedure, our SLP protocol is able to ensure that
the final packings are truly jammed, produces disordered jammed packings with
anomalously low densities, and is appreciably more robust and computationally
faster at generating maximally dense packings, especially as the space

Effective Interactions and Volume Energies in Charge-Stabilized Colloidal Suspensions
Charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions can be conveniently described by
formally reducing the macroion-microion mixture to an equivalent one-component
system of pseudo-particles. Within this scheme, the utility of a linear
response approximation for deriving effective interparticle interactions has
been demonstrated [M. J. Grimson and M. Silbert, Mol. Phys. 74, 397 (1991)].
Here the response approach is extended to suspensions of finite-sized macroions
and used to derive explicit expressions for (1) an effective electrostatic pair
interaction between pseudo-macroions and (2) an associated volume energy that
contributes to the total free energy. The derivation recovers precisely the
form of the DLVO screened-Coulomb effective pair interaction for spherical
macroions and makes manifest the important influence of the volume energy on
thermodynamic properties of deionized suspensions. Excluded volume corrections
are implicitly incorporated through a natural modification of the inverse
screening length. By including nonlinear response of counterions to macroions,
the theory may be generalized to systematically investigate effective many-body

Hydrodynamic interaction in quasi-two-dimensional suspensions
Confinement between two parallel surfaces is found, theoretically and
experimentally, to drastically affect the hydrodynamic interaction between
colloid particles, changing the sign of the coupling, its decay with distance
and its concentration dependence. In particular, we show that three-body
effects do not modify the coupling at large distances as would be expected from
