Superfluid vortex front at T -> 0: Decoupling from the reference frame
Steady-state turbulent motion is created in superfluid 3He-B at low
temperatures in the form of a turbulent vortex front, which moves axially along
a rotating cylindrical container of 3He-B and replaces vortex-free flow with
vortex lines at constant density. We present the first measurements on the
thermal signal from dissipation as a function of time, recorded at 0.2 Tc
during the front motion, which is monitored using NMR techniques. Both the
measurements and the numerical calculations of the vortex dynamics show that at
low temperatures the density of the propagating vortices falls well below the
equilibrium value, i.e. the superfluid rotates at a smaller angular velocity
than the container. This is the first evidence for the decoupling of the
superfluid from the container reference frame in the zero-temperature limit.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Self-localization of magnon Bose-Einstein condensates in the ground state and on excited levels: from harmonic to box-like trapping potential
Long-lived coherent spin precession of 3He-B at low temperatures around 0.2
Tc is a manifestation of Bose-Einstein condensation of spin-wave excitations or
magnons in a magnetic trap which is formed by the order-parameter texture and
can be manipulated experimentally. When the number of magnons increases, the
orbital texture reorients under the influence of the spin-orbit interaction and
the profile of the trap gradually changes from harmonic to a square well, with
walls almost impenetrable to magnons. This is the first experimental example of
Bose condensation in a box. By selective rf pumping the trap can be populated
with a ground-state condensate or one at any of the excited energy levels. In
the latter case the ground state is simultaneously populated by relaxation from
the exited level, forming a system of two coexisting condensates.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Novel Data Acquisition System for Silicon Tracking Detectors
We have developed a novel data acquisition system for measuring tracking
parameters of a silicon detector in a particle beam. The system is based on a
commercial Analog-to-Digital VME module and a PC Linux based Data Acquisition
System. This DAQ is realized with C++ code using object-oriented techniques.
Track parameters for the beam particles were reconstructed using off-line
analysis code and automatic detector position alignment algorithm.
The new DAQ was used to test novel Czochralski type silicon detectors. The
important silicon detector parameters, including signal size distributions and
signal to noise distributions, were successfully extracted from the detector
under study. The efficiency of the detector was measured to be 95 %, the
resolution about 10 micrometers, and the signal to noise ratio about 10.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Vortex-mediated relaxation of magnon BEC into light Higgs quasiparticles
A magnon Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in superfluid 3He is a fine instrument for studying the surrounding macroscopic quantum system. At zero temperature, the BEC is subject to a few distinct forms of decay into other collective excitations, owing to momentum and energy conservation in a quantum vacuum. We study the vortex-Higgs mechanism: The vortices relax the requirement for momentum conservation, allowing the optical magnons of the BEC to transform into light Higgs quasiparticles. This facilitates a direct measurement of the dimensions of the B-phase double-core vortex, providing experimental access to elusive phenomena, such as the Kelvin wave cascade and core-bound Majorana fermions. Our paper expands the spectrum of possible interactions between magnetic quasiparticles in 3He-BÂ and lays the groundwork for building magnon-based quantum devices
Nonlinear two-level dynamics of quantum time crystals
A time crystal is a macroscopic quantum system in periodic motion in its ground state. In our experiments, two coupled time crystals consisting of spin-wave quasiparticles (magnons) form a macroscopic two-level system. The two levels evolve in time as determined intrinsically by a nonlinear feedback, allowing us to construct spontaneous two-level dynamics. In the course of a level crossing, magnons move from the ground level to the excited level driven by the Landau-Zener effect, combined with Rabi population oscillations. We demonstrate that magnon time crystals allow access to every aspect and detail of quantum-coherent interactions in a single run of the experiment. Our work opens an outlook for the detection of surface-bound Majorana fermions in the underlying superfluid system, and invites technological exploitation of coherent magnon phenomena â potentially even at room temperature
GPsâ strategies in exploring the preschool childâs wellbeing in the paediatric consultation
Background:
Although General Practitioners (GPs) are uniquely placed to identify children with emotional, social, and behavioural problems, they succeed in identifying only a small number of them. The aim of this article is to explore the strategies, methods, and tools employed by GPs in the assessment of the preschool childâs emotional, mental, social, and behavioural health. We look at how GPs address parental care of the child in general and in situations where GPs have a particular awareness of the child.
Method:
Twenty-eight Danish GPs were purposively selected to take part in a qualitative study which combined focus-group discussions, observation of child consultations, and individual interviews with GPs.
Results:
Analysis of the data suggests that GPs have developed a set of methods, and strategies to assess the preschool child and parental care of the child. They look beyond paying narrow attention to the physical health of the child and they have expanded their practice to include the relations and interactions in the consultation room. The physical examination of the child continues to play a central role in doctor-child communication.
Conclusion:
The participating GPsâ strategies helped them to assess the wellbeing of the preschool child but they often find it difficult to share their impressions with parents
