RegPredict: an integrated system for regulon inference in prokaryotes by comparative genomics approach
RegPredict web server is designed to provide comparative genomics tools for reconstruction and analysis of microbial regulons using comparative genomics approach. The server allows the user to rapidly generate reference sets of regulons and regulatory motif profiles in a group of prokaryotic genomes. The new concept of a cluster of co-regulated orthologous operons allows the user to distribute the analysis of large regulons and to perform the comparative analysis of multiple clusters independently. Two major workflows currently implemented in RegPredict are: (i) regulon reconstruction for a known regulatory motif and (ii) ab initio inference of a novel regulon using several scenarios for the generation of starting gene sets. RegPredict provides a comprehensive collection of manually curated positional weight matrices of regulatory motifs. It is based on genomic sequences, ortholog and operon predictions from the MicrobesOnline. An interactive web interface of RegPredict integrates and presents diverse genomic and functional information about the candidate regulon members from several web resources. Restoration of hand function with long-term paired associative stimulation after chronic incomplete tetraplegia: a case study
INTRODUCTION: This case study explores the gains in hand function in an individual with a chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). The intervention was long-term paired associative simulation (PAS). We aimed to provide PAS until full recovery of hand muscle strength occurred, or until improvements ceased. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old man with traumatic C7 AIS B tetraplegia was administered PAS three times per week. After 24 weeks, PAS was combined with concomitant motor training of the remaining weak hand muscles. Outcome measures included the manual muscle test (MMT), motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), F-responses, hand functional tests, and the spinal cord independence measure (SCIM). DISCUSSION: After 47 weeks of PAS the subject had improved self-care and indoor mobility and was able to perform complex motor tasks (SCIM score improved from 40 to 56). His left hand regained maximum MMT score (total 75; increase of score from baseline condition 19); the effect remained stable in the 32-week follow up. In the right-hand muscles, MMT scores of 4-5 were observed in follow up (total 71; increase from baseline 48). Improved values were also observed in other outcomes. This is the first demonstration of long-term PAS restoring muscle strength corresponding to MMT scores of 4-5 in an individual with chronic SCI. The effect persisted for several months, indicating that PAS induces stable plastic changes in the corticospinal pathway.Peer reviewe
Multifragmentation and nuclear phase transitions (liquid-fog and liquid-gas)
Thermal multifragmentation of hot nuclei is interpreted as the nuclear
liquid-fog phase transition. The charge distributions of the intermediate mass
fragments produced in p(3.6 GeV) + Au and p(8.1 GeV) + Au collisions are
analyzed within the statistical multifragmentation model with the critical
temperature for the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition Tc as a free parameter.
The analysis presented here provides strong support for a value of Tc > 15 MeV.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Submittet to Proc. of NN2003 to be published in

Out-of-Equilibrium Admittance of Single Electron Box Under Strong Coulomb Blockade
We study admittance and energy dissipation in an out-of-equlibrium single
electron box. The system consists of a small metallic island coupled to a
massive reservoir via single tunneling junction. The potential of electrons in
the island is controlled by an additional gate electrode. The energy
dissipation is caused by an AC gate voltage. The case of a strong Coulomb
blockade is considered. We focus on the regime when electron coherence can be
neglected but quantum fluctuations of charge are strong due to Coulomb
interaction. We obtain the admittance under the specified conditions. It turns
out that the energy dissipation rate can be expressed via charge relaxation
resistance and renormalized gate capacitance even out of equilibrium. We
suggest the admittance as a tool for a measurement of the bosonic distribution
corresponding collective excitations in the system
A New GEM-like Imaging Detector with Electrodes Coated with Resistive Layers
We have developed and tested several prototypes of GEM-like detectors with
electrodes coated with resistive layers: CuO or CrO. These detectors can
operate stably at gains close to 10E5 and they are very robust. We discovered
that the cathodes of these detectors could be coated by CsI layers and in such
a way the detectors gain high efficiency for the UV photons. We also
demonstrated that such detectors can operate stably in the cascade mode and
high overall gains (~10E6) are reachable. This opens applications in several
areas, for example in RICH or in noble liquid TPCs. Results from the first
applications of these devices for UV photon detection at room and cryogenic
