Scarring by homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits
In addition to the well known scarring effect of periodic orbits, we show
here that homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits, which are cornerstones in the
theory of classical chaos, also scar eigenfunctions of classically chaotic
systems when associated closed circuits in phase space are properly quantized,
thus introducing strong quantum correlations. The corresponding quantization
rules are also established. This opens the door for developing computationally
tractable methods to calculate eigenstates of chaotic systems.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

One-step replica symmetry breaking solution of the quadrupolar glass model
We consider the quadrupolar glass model with infinite-range random
interaction. Introducing a simple one-step replica symmetry breaking ansatz we
investigate the para-glass continuous (discontinuous) transition which occurs
below (above) a critical value of the quadrupole dimension m*. By using a
mean-field approximation we study the stability of the one-step replica
symmetry breaking solution and show that for m>m* there are two transitions.
The thermodynamic transition is discontinuous but there is no latent heat. At a
higher temperature we find the dynamical or glass transition temperature and
the corresponding discontinuous jump of the order parameter.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
The XY Spin-Glass with Slow Dynamic Couplings
We investigate an XY spin-glass model in which both spins and couplings
evolve in time: the spins change rapidly according to Glauber-type rules,
whereas the couplings evolve slowly with a dynamics involving spin correlations
and Gaussian disorder. For large times the model can be solved using replica
theory. In contrast to the XY-model with static disordered couplings, solving
the present model requires two levels of replicas, one for the spins and one
for the couplings. Relevant order parameters are defined and a phase diagram is
obtained upon making the replica-symmetric Ansatz. The system exhibits two
different spin-glass phases, with distinct de Almeida-Thouless lines, marking
continuous replica-symmetry breaking: one describing freezing of the spins

A hypothesis for the anti-inflammatory and mechanotransduction molecular mechanisms underlying acupuncture tendon healing
A previous study demonstrated that acupuncture increases the synthesis and reorganisation of collagen molecules in rat tendons after injury. Clinical studies have shown that acupuncture improves pain and functional activity in patients with tendinopathy. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these effects are unknown. Recent studies have shown that acupuncture can modulate both anti-inflammatory (AI) and mechanotransduction (MT) molecular pathways. Moreover, the modulation of these pathways can increase type I collagen synthesis, which is the main factor that influences tendon biomechanical properties. Our hypothesis is that acupuncture increases synthesis and subsequent reorganisation of type I collagen during tendon healing by concomitant modulation of the Toll-like receptor-nuclear factor-kappa B AI pathway, the mitogen-activated protein kinases pathway and the Rho/Rac-F-actin MT pathway. Increased collagen synthesis and reorganisation requires that at least one acupoint is anatomically connected with the site of the injury because of the local tenoblast MT mechanism. Confirmation of this hypothesis will increase the knowledge of acupuncture modulation of the previously mentioned molecular pathways, and such confirmation may also help to establish the relationships between the different types of acupuncture needle stimulation and the influence of acupuncture stimuli on pathway activity levels. In addition, the downstream therapeutic effects of acupuncture therapy may be established. This hypothesis can be verified in a rat tendon healing model, and subsequent clinical protocols for tendon healing can be developed and evaluated as standalone therapies or as a component of a combination therapy32217818
