Aging Dynamics of a Fractal Model Gel
Using molecular dynamics computer simulations we investigate the aging
dynamics of a gel. We start from a fractal structure generated by the DLCA-DEF
algorithm, onto which we then impose an interaction potential consisting of a
short-range attraction as well as a long-range repulsion. After relaxing the
system at T=0, we let it evolve at a fixed finite temperature. Depending on the
temperature T we find different scenarios for the aging behavior. For T>0.2 the
fractal structure is unstable and breaks up into small clusters which relax to
equilibrium. For T<0.2 the structure is stable and the dynamics slows down with
increasing waiting time. At intermediate and low T the mean squared
displacement scales as t^{2/3} and we discuss several mechanisms for this
anomalous time dependence. For intermediate T, the self-intermediate scattering
function is given by a compressed exponential at small wave-vectors and by a
stretched exponential at large wave-vectors. In contrast, for low T it is a
stretched exponential for all wave-vectors. This behavior can be traced back to
a subtle interplay between elastic rearrangements, fluctuations of chain-like
filaments, and heterogeneity.Comment: 30 pages, 25 figure

Modelagem CESM para um sistema de recomendações: o caso de uma livraria virtual
Recommender systems aim to create personalized recommendations for guiding the user in choosing the most useful product, service, or content in a large space of possible options. Through content filtering and collaborative filtering, a recommender system can select appropriate options for the user, alleviating the information overload in the context of virtual bookstores. In this sense, this work’s aim is to present the modeling and analysis of a recommender system for a virtual bookstore seen as a sociotechnological system. A sociotechnological system involves human agents and artificial agents, the interconnections between them, their interaction dynamics, subjection to changes in relation to environmental demands and the emergence of behaviors. In this context, the methodological approach is based on the systemic view of Mario Bunge, through the application of the CESM model, according to which a system can be represented by its components, environment, structure, and mechanism. Mechanisms involved in the recommender system are outlined as cause-effect diagrams. The CESM modeling offers an integrated view of the interconnections and interactions between the components of the system and their context, and the identification of the involved processes. The modeling study precedes its computational implementation and actions for improvements and corrections of non-functional aspects related to the mechanisms can be designed before its deployment in the context of a virtual bookstore
Ag-coverage-dependent symmetry of the electronic states of the Pt(111)-Ag-Bi interface: The ARPES view of a structural transition
We studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy the strain-related
structural transition from a pseudomorphic monolayer (ML) to a striped
incommensurate phase in an Ag thin film grown on Pt(111). We exploited the
surfactant properties of Bi to grow ordered Pt(111)-xMLAg-Bi trilayers with 0 <
x < 5 ML, and monitored the dispersion of the Bi-derived interface states to
probe the structure of the underlying Ag film. We find that their symmetry
changes from threefold to sixfold and back to threefold in the Ag coverage
range studied. Together with previous scanning tunneling microscopy and
photoelectron diffraction data, these results provide a consistent microscopic
description of the coverage-dependent structural transition.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Transmission measurement at 10.6 microns of Te2As3Se5 rib-waveguides on As2S3 substrate
The feasibility of chalcogenide rib waveguides working at lambda = 10.6
microns has been demonstrated. The waveguides comprised a several microns thick
Te2As3Se5 film deposited by thermal evaporation on a polished As2S3 glass
substrate and further etched by physical etching in Ar or CF4/O2 atmosphere.
Output images at 10.6 microns and some propagation losses roughly estimated at
10dB/cm proved that the obtained structures behaved as channel waveguides with
a good lateral confinement of the light. The work opens the doors to the
realisation of components able to work in the mid and thermal infrared up to 20

Microsurgical Technique of Simultaneous Pancreas/Kidney Transplantation in the Rat: Clinical Experience and Review of the Literature
Background: For experimental basic research, standardized transplantation models reflecting technical and immunologic aspects are necessary. This article describes an experimental model of combined pancreas/kidney transplantation (PKTx) in detail. Materials and Methods: Donor rats underwent en bloc pancreatectomy and nephrectomy. Revascularization was performed using the aorta with the superior mesenteric artery and the inferior vena cava with the portal vein. Exocrine drainage of the pancreas took place over a segment of the duodenum which was transplanted side-to-side to the jejunum. The kidney vessels were transplanted end-to-side. The ureter was anastomosed by patch technique. Postoperatively, serum parameters were monitored daily. Biopsies for histopathology were taken on days 5, 8 and 12. Results: All 12 recipients survived the combined PKTx without serious surgical complications. One thrombosis of the portal vein led to organ failure. Blood glucose levels were normal by the 3rd postoperative day. The transplanted duodenal segment showed slight villous atrophy, and the kidneys were well perfused without vascular complications. The anastomosis between ureter and bladder was leakproof. Conclusions: Excellent graft function and survival rates can be achieved due to simplified operation technique and short operation time.
