    ADS-B signals reception: a Software Defined Radio approach

    In Air Traffic Control, ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast) systems provide surveillance information as obtained by the cooperating airplanes. This usage of air-derived data and of a common link opens various issues: performance in dense traffic area, signals validation and security. A Software Defined Radio (SDR) permits the needed flexibility and modularity in order to easily develop prototypal devices for evaluation and test of novel enhancements of ADS-B receivers. In this frame, a multi-channel receiver for 1090 MHz ADS-B signals was implemented, using an array antenna, a specific designed analog front-end and a software defined receiver. The device is useful to test signal processing algorithms and to analyse the channel traffic. The receiver is also jointly used with another SDR device capable to generate 1090 MHz traffic. With this configuration it is possible to generate specific traffic scenarios characterized by interferences from multiple sources and/or by jammer. This paper deals with the hardware and set-up description, the presentation of the developed software receiver and its functions, and, finally, the results achieved using the system

    Full, hybrid and platform complementarity: Exploring the industry 4.0 technology-performance link

    Literature has increasingly recognized that manufacturing companies should implement a synergic bundle of solutions to fully exploit the potential of Industry 4.0 (I4.0), rather than opting for a scattered technological adoption. Enabling I4.0 technologies, such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and additive manufacturing, can be implemented through various combinations to achieve different impacts on a company's performance. But what are the possible ways of combining I4.0 technologies into bundles, and do these ways actually help to achieve a performance that outperforms the adoption of single technologies? This study aims to identify the potential patterns of the technological complementary of I4.0 by considering enabled applications and performance outcomes. We interviewed 13 Italian experts in the I4.0 field, and then combined the obtained information with secondary data collected from more than 150 I4.0 use cases, as well as from websites, reports and press releases. By adopting a systems theory lens, the results of the analysis have allowed us to identify the specific performance effects of both scattered and joint technological adoptions in different application areas. Interestingly, specific examples of I4.0 complementarities emerged, namely full, hybrid and platform complementarity. This study contributes to the growing research on I4.0 outcomes by extending the concept of technological complementary within the I4.0 context. Results show that bundles of technologies have a broader effect on performance than when the same technologies are adopted in isolation, but also that single technologies can impact specific applications and the overall performance of a firm via a systematic I4.0 transformation path

    Recent advances in in silico target fishing

    In silico target fishing, whose aim is to identify possible protein targets for a query molecule, is an emerging approach used in drug discovery due its wide variety of applications. This strategy allows the clarification of mechanism of action and biological activities of compounds whose target is still unknown. Moreover, target fishing can be employed for the identification of off targets of drug candidates, thus recognizing and preventing their possible adverse effects. For these reasons, target fishing has increasingly become a key approach for polypharmacology, drug repurposing, and the identification of new drug targets. While experimental target fishing can be lengthy and difficult to implement, due to the plethora of interactions that may occur for a single small-molecule with different protein targets, an in silico approach can be quicker, less expensive, more efficient for specific protein structures, and thus easier to employ. Moreover, the possibility to use it in combination with docking and virtual screening studies, as well as the increasing number of web-based tools that have been recently developed, make target fishing a more appealing method for drug discovery. It is especially worth underlining the increasing implementation of machine learning in this field, both as a main target fishing approach and as a further development of already applied strategies. This review reports on the main in silico target fishing strategies, belonging to both ligand-based and receptor-based approaches, developed and applied in the last years, with a particular attention to the different web tools freely accessible by the scientific community for performing target fishing studies

    Analysis of the Socio-Economic Impacts of a Proposed Highway between Nuevo Italia and Puerto Breu, Peru

    Road building is increasingly promoted in the borderlands shared by Peru and Brazil despite an incomplete understanding of the socio-environmental impacts of transportation infrastructure in the region. Amazonian roads often expand informally, without official government process, previous consultation by Indigenous populations, and environmental impact statements.. Amazonian road expansion also often follows a progressive feedback cycle, with new, unplanned roads begetting illegal logging pathways and agricultural expansion which in turn expands and formalizes road systems. One expanding road system is developing between the Ucayali River and the remote headwaters of the Yurua/Jurua River. The Carretera Yurua (officially trail UC-105), extended approximately300 km long in August 2020. Existing research suggests that the unplanned construction of the Yurua road, which originally began as informal logging roads extending off a road to explore fossil fuels, could result in significant land changes and will facilitate ranching, additional illegal timber harvesting, and coca farming, threatening global biodiversity hotspots and conservation areas, and endangered Indigenous cultures and territories. This research spatially analyzes the different waterways, cultural territories, conservation areas and other administrative units crossed by the proposed road. Additional analysis includes the deforestation footprint and downstream impacts of the road. Methods include GIS analysis and remote sensing along with document and internet research of news articles, legal documents, social media communications, interviews from key actors, and studies of similar infrastructure projects in the bio-culturally diverse Amazon borderlands

    Circulating dendritic cells are severely decreased in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis with a potential value for prognosis prediction

    Dendritic cells (DCs) accumulate in the lung of patients affected by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). We measured the frequencies of circulating conventional CD1c + and CD141+ cells (namely, cDC2 and cDC1) and of plasmacytoid CD303+ DCs in a cohort of 60 therapy naive IPF patients by flow cytometry. Peripheral levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and of pro-inflammatory and Th1/Th2 polarizing cytokines were also analyzed. All blood DC subtypes were significantly reduced in IPF patients in comparison to age- and sex-matched controls, while ROS and interleukin (IL-6) levels were augmented. IL-6 expression increased along with disease severity, according to the gender-age-physiology index, and correlated with the frequency of cDC2. IL-6 and cDC2 were not influenced by anti-fibrotic therapies but were associated with a reduced survival, the latter being an independent predictive biomarker of worse prognosis. Deciphering the role of DCs in IPF might provide information on disease pathogenesis and clinical behavior

    How Organizational Resources and Managerial Features Affect Business Performance: An Analysis in the Greek Wine Industry

    Despite the growing interest of the wine industry in quality and environmental certifications and the influence of these standards on positioning in international markets, scholarly research has paid proportionally limited attention to the link between winery export intensity and the adoption of internationally recognized standards. This study aims to analyze which factors make an organizational model performant, and to verify the impact of the adoption of third-party certifications on the export performance by using the resource-based view (RBV) theory as a theoretical lens. Findings show that younger wineries are more oriented towards the adoption of voluntary quality and environmental certifications, and they achieve the best economic performance, expressed in terms of overall turnover on the market. On the contrary, the better export performance is achieved by the largest group of wineries, which make the greatest effort in promotion and advertising activities and sell their products through intermediaries, while showing a low adoption of certifications. Our results have a number of theoretical and practical implications

    An effective procedure to design the layout of standard and enhanced mode-S multilateration systems for airport surveillance

    In this paper, an effective procedure to emplace standard and enhanced mode-S multilateration stations for airport surveillance is studied and developed. This procedure is based on meta-heuristic optimization techniques, such as genetic algorithm (GA), and is intended to obtain useful parameters for an optimal system configuration that provides acceptable performance levels. Furthermore, the procedure developed here is able to evaluate and improve previous system designs, as well as possible system enhancements. Additionally, the design strategies to be used along with the procedure proposed here are fully described. Parameters such as the number of stations, the system geometry, the kind of measurements to be used, and the system accuracy are obtained taking into account the basic requirements such as the Line of Sight, the probability of detection, and the accuracy levels. © Cambridge University Press and the European Microwave Association, 2012

    Haspin regulates Ras localization to promote Cdc24-driven mitotic depolarization

    Cell polarization is of paramount importance for proliferation, differentiation, development, and it is altered during carcinogenesis. Polarization is a reversible process controlled by positive and negative feedback loops. How polarized factors are redistributed is not fully understood and is the focus of this work. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mutants defective in haspin kinase exhibit stably polarized landmarks and are sensitive to mitotic delays. Here, we report a new critical role for haspin in polarisome dispersion; failure to redistribute polarity factors, in turn, leads to nuclear segregation defects and cell lethality. We identified a mitotic role for GTP-Ras in regulating the local activation of the Cdc42 GTPase, resulting in its dispersal from the bud tip to a homogeneous distribution over the plasma membrane. GTP-Ras2 physically interacts with Cdc24 regulateing its mitotic distribution. Haspin is shown to promote a mitotic shift from a bud tip-favored to a homogenous PM fusion of Ras-containing vesicles. In absence of haspin, active Ras is not redistributed from the bud tip; Cdc24 remains hyperpolarized promoting the activity of Cdc42 at the bud tip, and the polarisome fails to disperse leading to erroneously positioned mitotic spindle, defective nuclear segregation, and cell death after mitotic delays. These findings describe new functions for key factors that modulate cell polarization and mitotic events, critical processes involved in development and tumorigenesis
