    Cyanobacteria and Biosequestration: The Effects of High CO2 Levels on Calcifying Strains of Synechococcus

    Increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and its influence on climate change is a growing concern in the scientific, political, and social communities. Methods of mitigation are being tested to explore carbon capture and storage through the biosynthesis of stable carbon-containing compounds using different strains of calcifying cyanobacteria. By utilizing marine genera, the cyanobacteria could potentially be grown in brine waste waters, conserving valuable fresh water resources. In this experiment, two strains of Synechococcus were cultured in flasks with varying levels of CO2: air, 5% CO2, and 15% CO2. Growth of each culture was monitored by measuring optical density and pH level, as calcification requires an alkaline environment. Morphological characteristics of each culture were analyzed through light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to compare differences in cell surface and association. Preliminary results have shown inconsistent morphology and growth. Cultures started from previous experiments lacked duplication of observed filamentous morphology, but exhibited better growth in high CO2 levels. The incubation of cultures in media with varying levels of calcium chloride will be used to analyze and compare the sequestration of carbon through calcium carbonate production. Analysis of the chemical composition of precipitates in the media and the S-layer of cells will verify the presence of calcium carbonate. Methods include the use of SEM-EDX (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) and polarized light microscopy. If experimental outcomes verify efficient production of calcium carbonate from sources of high CO2, these cyanobacteria may be viable systems for capturing carbon

    51 Eri and GJ 3305: A 10-15 Myr old binary star system at 30 parsecs

    Following the suggestion of Zuckerman et al. (2001, ApJ, 562, L87), we consider the evidence that 51 Eri (spectral type F0) and GJ 3305 (M0), historically classified as unrelated main sequence stars in the solar neighborhood, are instead a wide physical binary system and members of the young beta Pic moving group (BPMG). The BPMG is the nearest (d < 50 pc) of several groups of young stars with ages around 10 Myr that are kinematically convergent with the Oph-Sco-Cen Association (OSCA), the nearest OB star association. Combining SAAO optical photometry, Hobby-Eberly Telescope high-resolution spectroscopy, Chandra X-ray data, and UCAC2 catalog kinematics, we confirm with high confidence that the system is indeed extremely young. GJ 3305 itself exhibits very strong magnetic activity but has rapidly depleted most of its lithium. The 51 Eri/GJ 3305 system is the westernmost known member of the OSCA, lying 110 pc from the main subgroups. The system is similar to the BPMG wide binary HD 172555/CD -64d1208 and the HD 104237 quintet, suggesting that dynamically fragile multiple systems can survive the turbulent environments of their natal giant molecular cloud complexes, while still being imparted high dispersion velocities. Nearby young systems such as these are excellent targets for evolved circumstellar disk and planetary studies, having stellar ages comparable to that of the late phases of planet formation.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures.     Relative spins and excitation energies of superdeformed bands in 190Hg: Further evidence for octupole vibration

    An experiment using the Eurogam Phase II gamma-ray spectrometer confirms the existence of an excited superdeformed (SD) band in 190Hg and its very unusual decay into the lowest SD band over 3-4 transitions. The energies and dipole character of the transitions linking the two SD bands have been firmly established.     The Role of Glutamate and GABA in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Pilot Results from a Proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Study

    Objectives: To measure the levels of glutamate, a major excitatory neurotransmitter; glutamine, a metabolite of glutamate; and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a major inhibitory neurotransmitter; in a pilot study of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) findings in adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Methods: The subjects were assessed with the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), the Reading the Mind in the Eyes test (RMET) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). 1H-MRS measures of the anterior cingulate cortex were conducted using a Philips 3.0 T scanner. Results: To date, we have completed the data analysis on 18 subjects, 8 with ASD and 10 healthy control (HC) subjects. There was no significant difference between the combined glutamate + glutamine concentrations as measured by 1H-MRS (ASD = 12.0 ± 0.9 IU, HC = 11.6 ± 0.8 IU, p = 0.37). However, there was a higher than average glutamine level in the ASD group compared to healthy controls (ASD = 2.4 ± 0.2 IU, HC = 1.9 ± 0.3 IU, p = 0.01). This was accompanied by a trend toward lower GABA/Cr levels in the ASD group (ASD = 0.073 ± 0.010, HC = 0.082 ± 0.010, p = 0.06). Glutamine levels in the ACC were correlated positively with deficits of social cognition across groups (higher SRS, lower RMET scores). Those with higher glutamine levels made more errors when identifying emotions in the RMET task (r(10) = -0.77, p = 0.009), and also had more clinically significant scores on the SRS (r(10) = 0.87, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Our results present evidence that glutamine levels measured within the ACC region are higher for adolescent males with ASD than age-matched HC males, and signal that GABA levels may also be decreased in this region. These changes are correlated with deficits in social cognition
