    Teaching mathematics using the internet

    This paper examines teachers\u27 use of the Internet in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. The study draws upon data collected via an online survey and interviews with six teachers. It reports on their beliefs, strategies for use and their perceptions on how it impacts on students and their learning of mathematics. Some comparisons are made between the ways teachers used the Internet.<br /

    Double learning or double blinding: an investigation of vendor private information acquisition and consumer learning via online reviews

    In this paper, building upon information acquisition theory and using portfolio methods and system equations, we made an empirical investigation into how online vendors and consumers are learning from each other, and how online reviews, prices, and sales interact among each other. First, this study shows that vendors acquire information from both private and public channels to learn the quality of their products to make price adjustment. Second, for the more popular products and newly released products, vendors are more motivated to acquire private information that is more precise than the average precision to adjust their price. Third, we document a full demand-mediation model between rating and price. In other words, there is no direct linkage between price and rating, and the impact of rating on price (the vendor learning) as well as the impact of price on rating (the consumer learning) are all through demand. Our results show that there is no fundamental difference between the pricing decisions with and without the consumer generated contents. The price is still driven by the supply and demand relationship and vendors only adjust their price in response to review change when those reviews impact sales. We proposed either the impact of reviews has been incorporated into sales or reviews are less truth worthy due to potential review manipulation. Given the complicate situation, we call for further study to unveil this double learning process with double blinding results

    : Nowadays, incident of obesity also can be found in poverty population with low educational level. This condition affect on the rising consumption of high-fat food and energy-dense sugar in this population. The purpose of this research is to know the correlation of macro nutrients intake and obesity at the women of childbearing age as Jamkesmas member in Wawonasa, Singkil, Manado. This research is using cross–sectional design and has taking sample in Wawonasa clinic, Singkil, Manado for a month, that is from November till December 2012. Sampling method is purposive sampling with 77 subject who had been measured for body height and body weight and also had been interviewed using recall method 24th hours to take the data for macro nutrients intake those are carbohydrate, protein, and fat that had been consumed one day before. The data from the research was being analyzed with chi–square analysis test with α = 0,05. The result of analysis show there is no relation of carbohydrate intake and obesity (p=0,980), no relation of protein intake and obesity (p=0,602), and there is no-significant relation of fat intake and obesity (p=0,265). The conclusion from this research is no relation of macro nutrients intake and obesity at women of childbearing age as Jamkesmas member in Wawonasa clinic, Singkil, Manado

    Control Management and Business Performances: the Malaysian Family SMEs Perspectives

    This study examined the relationship between control management and family business performance in the Malaysian context. It has two objectives, the first being to determine the relationship of organizational credit control policy and procedures, employee development and motivation, and intelligence collection systems to subsequent collection reports in Malaysian family SMEs. The second objective is to investigate the moderating effect of participation in decision-making and work effort towards innovation and business performance. This is a descriptive study involving 90 senior executives employed in 90 Malaysian family SMEs/firms. A correlation analysis from this study confirmed previous researchers&rsquo; observations that high-level organizational commitment to credit control management is linked to improvements in business performance. The results suggest that three components &ndash; credit policy, employee development, and intelligence collection systems &ndash; are the most important predictors for the efficiency and effectiveness of credit control management. &nbsp; &nbsp

    Non-gastric marginal zone B cell lymphoma: Clinicopathologic features and treatment results

    The optimal treatment strategy and outcome of non-gastric marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) remains undefined. The role of rituximab and fludarabine in MZL has not been critically appraised and compared with conventional chemotherapy. We retrospectively analyzed 81 consecutive patients with non-gastric MZL (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, n = 66; splenic MZL, n = 11; nodal MZL, n = 4). As a group, the treatment results were favorable, with an overall response rate of 87% and a complete response (CR) rate of 73%. The CR rate was similar for conventional chemotherapy, and rituximab- and fludarabine-containing regimens. However, the relapse rate was significantly decreased in rituximab- and fludarabine-containing regimens. The use of rituximab and fludarabine was associated with acceptable side effects. For splenic MZL, splenectomy was significantly associated with a superior CR rate. Early stage, good performance status, and low international prognostic index risk scores significantly impacted on CR rate and survivals. Rituximab and fludarabine were safe for non-gastric MZL and resulted in more durable remissions. © 2011 The Author(s).published_or_final_versionSpringer Open Choice, 21 Feb 201

    Origin of the large phonon band-gap in SrTiO3 and the vibrational signatures of ferroelectricity in ATiO3 perovskite: First principles lattice dynamics and inelastic neutron scattering of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3

    We report first principles density functional perturbation theory calculations and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density of states, dispersion relations and electromechanical response of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. The phonon density-of-states of the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 is found to be fundamentally distinct from that of ferroelectric PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 with a large 70-90 meV phonon band-gap. The phonon dispersion and electromechanical response of PbTiO3 reveal giant anisotropies. The interplay of covalent bonding and ferroelectricity, strongly modulates the electromechanical response and give rise to spectacular signatures in the phonon spectra. The computed charge densities have been used to study the bonding in these perovskites. Distinct bonding characteristics in the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases give rise to spectacular vibrational signatures. While a large phonon band-gap in ATiO3 perovskites seems a characteristic of quantum paraelectrics, anisotropy of the phonon spectra correlates well with ferroelectric strength. These correlations between the phonon spectra and ferroelectricity, can guide future efforts at custom designing still more effective piezoelectrics for applications.     Linear Response Calculations of Spin Fluctuations

    A variational formulation of the time--dependent linear response based on the Sternheimer method is developed in order to make practical ab initio calculations of dynamical spin susceptibilities of solids. Using gradient density functional and a muffin-tin-orbital representation, the efficiency of the approach is demonstrated by applications to selected magnetic and strongly paramagnetic metals.
