Travelling waves in a drifting flux lattice
Starting from the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations for a type
II superconductor, we derive the equations of motion for the displacement field
of a moving vortex lattice without inertia or pinning. We show that it is
linearly stable and, surprisingly, that it supports wavelike long-wavelength
excitations arising not from inertia or elasticity but from the
strain-dependent mobility of the moving lattice. It should be possible to image
these waves, whose speeds are a few \mu m/s, using fast scanning tunnelling

Supporting parent-child conversations in a history museum
BACKGROUND: Museums can serve as rich resources for families to learn about the social world through engagement with exhibits and parent-child conversation about exhibits.
AIMS: This study examined ways of engaging parents and child about two related exhibits at a cultural and history museum. Sample participants consisted of families visiting the Animal Antics and the Gone Potty exhibits at the British Museum.
METHODS: Whilst visiting two exhibits at the British Museum, 30 families were assigned to use a backpack of activities, 13 were assigned to a booklet of activities, and 15 were assigned to visit the exhibits without props (control condition).
RESULTS: Compared to the families in the control condition, the interventions increased the amount of time parents and children engaged together with the exhibit. Additionally, recordings of the conversations revealed that adults asked more questions related to the exhibits when assigned to the two intervention conditions compared to the control group. Children engaged in more historical talk when using the booklets than in the other two conditions.
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that providing support with either booklets or activities for children at exhibits may prove beneficial to parent-child conversations and engagement with museum exhibits
Central blockade of oxytocin receptors during mid-late gestation reduces amplitude of slow afterhyperpolarization in supraoptic oxytocin neurons
The neurohypophysial hormone oxytocin (OT), synthesized in magnocellular paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei, is well known for its effects in lactation. Our previous studies showed that central OT receptor (OTR) binding is increased during gestation and that blockade of central OTRs, specifically during mid-late gestation, causes a delay in OT release during suckling and reduces weight gain in pups, suggesting decreased milk delivery. In the present study, we tested whether central OTR blockade during late gestation disrupts the gestation-related plasticity in intrinsic membrane properties. Whole cell current-clamp recordings were performed in OT neurons from pregnant rats (19-22 days in gestation) that were infused with an OTR antagonist (OTA) or artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) and from virgin rats infused with aCSF into the third ventricle via an osmotic minipump beginning on days 12-14 of gestation. The amplitudes of both Ca2+-dependent afterhyperpolarizations (AHPs), an apamin-sensitive medium AHP (mAHP) and an apamin-insensitive slow AHP (sAHP), were significantly increased during late gestation in control pregnant animals. However, the amplitude of the sAHP from pregnant rats treated with the OTA was significantly smaller than that of pregnant control rats and similar to that of virgins. These results indicate that the diminished efficiency in lactation due to OTR blockade may be partly a result of an altered sAHP that would shape OT bursting. These findings suggest that central actions of OT during late gestation are necessary for programming the plasticity of at least some of the intrinsic membrane properties in OT neurons during lactation. Characterizing Atacama B-mode Search Detectors with a Half-Wave Plate
The Atacama B-Mode Search (ABS) instrument is a cryogenic (10 K)
crossed-Dragone telescope located at an elevation of 5190 m in the Atacama
Desert in Chile that observed for three seasons between February 2012 and
October 2014. ABS observed the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at large
angular scales () to limit the B-mode polarization spectrum around
the primordial B-mode peak from inflationary gravity waves at .
The ABS focal plane consists of 480 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers.
They are coupled to orthogonal polarizations from a planar ortho-mode
transducer (OMT) and observe at 145 GHz. ABS employs an ambient-temperature,
rapidly rotating half-wave plate (HWP) to mitigate systematic effects and move
the signal band away from atmospheric noise, allowing for the recovery of
large angular scales. We discuss how the signal at the second harmonic of the
HWP rotation frequency can be used for data selection and for monitoring the

Coulomb plus power-law potentials in quantum mechanics
We study the discrete spectrum of the Hamiltonian H = -Delta + V(r) for the
Coulomb plus power-law potential V(r)=-1/r+ beta sgn(q)r^q, where beta > 0, q >
-2 and q \ne 0. We show by envelope theory that the discrete eigenvalues
E_{n\ell} of H may be approximated by the semiclassical expression
E_{n\ell}(q) \approx min_{r>0}\{1/r^2-1/(mu r)+ sgn(q) beta(nu r)^q}.
Values of mu and nu are prescribed which yield upper and lower bounds.
Accurate upper bounds are also obtained by use of a trial function of the form,
psi(r)= r^{\ell+1}e^{-(xr)^{q}}. We give detailed results for
V(r) = -1/r + beta r^q, q = 0.5, 1, 2 for n=1, \ell=0,1,2, along with

Phaselocked patterns and amplitude death in a ring of delay coupled limit cycle oscillators
We study the existence and stability of phaselocked patterns and amplitude
death states in a closed chain of delay coupled identical limit cycle
oscillators that are near a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. The coupling is
limited to nearest neighbors and is linear. We analyze a model set of discrete
dynamical equations using the method of plane waves. The resultant dispersion
relation, which is valid for any arbitrary number of oscillators, displays
important differences from similar relations obtained from continuum models. We
discuss the general characteristics of the equilibrium states including their
dependencies on various system parameters. We next carry out a detailed linear
stability investigation of these states in order to delineate their actual
existence regions and to determine their parametric dependence on time delay.
Time delay is found to expand the range of possible phaselocked patterns and to
contribute favorably toward their stability. The amplitude death state is
studied in the parameter space of time delay and coupling strength. It is shown
that death island regions can exist for any number of oscillators N in the
presence of finite time delay. A particularly interesting result is that the
size of an island is independent of N when N is even but is a decreasing

Cardiovascular disease in Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency:an observational study assessing the role of neutrophil proteinase activity and the suitability of validated screening tools
Background: Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD) is a rare, inherited lung disease which shares features with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) but has a greater burden of proteinase related tissue damage. These proteinases are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general population. It is unclear whether patients with AATD have a greater risk of CVD compared to usual COPD, how best to screen for this, and whether neutrophil proteinases are implicated in AATD-associated CVD. This study had three aims. To compare CVD risk in never-augmented AATD patients to non-AATD COPD and healthy controls (HC). To assess relationships between CVD risk and lung physiology. To determine if neutrophil proteinase activity was associated with CVD risk in AATD. Cardiovascular risk was assessed by QRISK2® score and aortic stiffness measurements using carotid-femoral (aortic) pulse wave velocity (aPWV). Medical history, computed tomography scans and post-bronchodilator lung function parameters were reviewed. Systemic proteinase 3 activity was measured. Patients were followed for 4 years, to assess CVD development. Results: 228 patients with AATD, 50 with non-AATD COPD and 51 healthy controls were recruited. In all COPD and HC participants, QRISK2® and aPWV gave concordant results (with both measures either high or in the normal range). This was not the case in AATD. Once aPWV was adjusted for age and smoking history, aPWV was highest and QRISK2® lowest in AATD patients compared to the COPD or HC participants. Higher aPWV was associated with impairments in lung physiology, the presence of emphysema on CT scan and proteinase 3 activity following adjustment for age, smoking status and traditional CVD risk factors (using QRISK2® scores) in AATD. There were no such relationships with QRISK2® in AATD. AATD patients with confirmed CVD at four-year follow up had a higher aPWV but not QRISK2® at baseline assessment. Conclusion: aPWV measured CVD risk is elevated in AATD. This risk is not captured by QRISK2®. There is a relationship between aPWV, lung disease and proteinase-3 activity. Proteinase-driven breakdown of elastin fibres in large arteries and lungs is a putative mechanism and forms a potential therapeutic target for CVD in AATD
Using legume-based mixtures to enhance the nitrogen use efficiency and economic viability of cropping systems - Final report (LK09106/HGCA3447)
As costs for mineral fertilisers rise, legume-based leys are recognised as a potential alternative nitrogen source for crops. Here we demonstrate that including species-rich legume-based leys in rotations helps to maximise synergies between agricultural productivity and other ecosystem services. By using functionally diverse plant species mixtures, these services can be optimised and fine-tuned to regional and farm-specific needs. Replicated field experiments were conducted over three years at multiple locations, testing the performance of 12 legume species and 4 grass species sown in monocultures, as well as in a mixture of 10 of the legumes and all 4 grasses (called the All Species Mix, ASM). In addition, we compared this complex mixture to farmer-chosen ley mixtures on 34 sites across the UK.
The trials showed that there is a large degree of functional complementarity among the legume species. No single species scored high on all evaluation criteria. In particular, the currently most frequently used species, white clover, is outscored by other legume species on a number of parameters such as early development and resistance to decomposition. Further complementarity emerged from the different responses of legume species to environmental variables, with soil pH and grazing or cutting regime being among the more important factors. For example, while large birdsfoot trefoil showed better performance on more acidic soils, the opposite was true for sainfoin, lucerne and black medic. In comparison with the monocultures, the ASM showed increased ground cover, increased above-ground biomass and reduced weed biomass. Benefits of mixing species with regard to productivity increased over time. In addition, the stability of biomass production across sites was greater in the ASM than in the legume monocultures. Within the on-farm trials, we further found that on soils low in organic matter the biomass advantage of the ASM over the Control ley was more marked than on the soils with higher organic matter content. Ecological modelling revealed that the three best multifunctional mixtures all contained black medic, lucerne and red clover.
Within the long term New Farming Systems (NFS) rotational study, the use of a clover bi-crop showed improvement to soil characteristics compared to current practice (e.g. bulk density and water infiltration rate). Improvements in wheat yield were also noted with respect to the inclusion of a clover bi-crop in 2010, but there was evidence of a decline in response as the N dose was increased. Cumulatively, over both the wheat crop and the spring oilseed rape crop, the clover bi-crop improved margin over N. The highest average yield response (~9%) was associated with the ASM legume species mix cover cropping approach

CASES: A Smart, Compact GPS Software Receiver for Space Weather Monitoring
A real-time software-defined GPS receiver for the L1 C/A
and L2C codes has been developed as a low-cost space
weather instrument for monitoring ionospheric
scintillation and total electron content. The so-called
CASES receiver implements several novel processing
techniques not previously published that make it well
suited for space weather monitoring: (A) a differencing
technique for eliminating local clock effects, (B) an
advanced triggering mechanism for determining the onset of scintillation, (C) data buffering to permit observation
of the prelude to scintillation, and (D) data-bit prediction
and wipe-off for robust tracking. The receiver has been
tested in a variety of benign and adverse signal conditions
(e.g., severe ionospheric scintillation, both real and
simulated); the results are presented here. The custom
hardware platform on which the software runs is compact
while remaining flexible and extensible. The CASES
platform consists of a digital signal processor, an ARM
microcontroller, and a custom-built narrow-band dualfrequency
front end. Because the receiver is softwaredefined,
it can be remotely reprogrammed via the internet
