    Status Report on Efforts to Enhance Instrumentation to Support Advanced Test Reactor Irradiations

    The Department of Energy (DOE) designated the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) as a National Scientific User Facility (NSUF) in April 2007 to support U.S. leadership in nuclear science and technology. By attracting new research users - universities, laboratories, and industry - the ATR NSUF facilitates basic and applied nuclear research and development, further advancing the nation's energy security needs. A key component of the ATR NSUF effort is to prove new in-pile instrumentation techniques that are capable of providing real-time measurements of key parameters during irradiation. To address this need, an assessment of instrumentation available and under-development at other test reactors was completed. Based on this review, recommendations were made with respect to what instrumentation is needed at the ATR; and a strategy was developed for obtaining these sensors.     A Device for Noninvasive Assessment of Vascular Impairment Risk in the Lower Extremity

    The repeatability and resolution of the clinical gold standard of vascular assessment, the ankle-brachial index (ABI), was compared to that of a new device that dynamically assesses tissue perfusion during external loading utilizing laser Doppler flowmetry. Eight subjects of varying levels of vascular impairment were tested in successive weeks using two different sites on the subject\u27s posterior calf. These new measures included the perfusion decrease as well as the unloading delay during cyclic loading. Some new dynamic tissue perfusion measures demonstrated comparable levels of reproducibility with the ABI (e.g., 10%-20%). Only the unloading delay showed potentially enhanced resolution over ABI measures. The perfusion decrease showed little resolution, and the remaining parameters exhibited too great variability (25%-90%). The unloading delay associated with the reperfusion response during cyclic loading displayed the greatest combination of reproducibility and differentiation between subject groups of varying levels of vascular impairment.     Investigation of Gravitational Lens Mass Models

    We have previously reported the discovery of strong gravitational lensing by faint elliptical galaxies using the WFPC2 on HST and here we investigate their potential usefulness in putting constraints on lens mass models. We compare various ellipsoidal surface mass distributions, including those with and without a core radius, as well as models in which the mass distributions are assumed to have the same axis ratio and orientation as the galaxy light. We also study models which use a spherical mass distribution having various profiles, both empirical and following those predicted by CDM simulations. These models also include a gravitational shear term. The model parameters and associated errors have been derived by 2-dimensional analysis of the observed HST WFPC2 images. The maximum likelihood procedure iteratively converges simultaneously on the model for the lensing elliptical galaxy and the lensed image components. The motivation for this study was to distinguish between these mass models with this technique. However, we find that, despite using the full image data rather than just locations and integrated magnitudes, the lenses are fit equally well with several of the mass models. Each of the mass models generates a similar configuration but with a different magnification and cross-sectional area within the caustic, and both of these latter quantities govern the discovery probability of lensing in the survey.     Residents of rural jurisdictions face significant health challenges, including some of the highest rates of risky health behaviors and worst health outcomes of any group in the country. Rural communities are served by smaller local health departments (LHDs) that are more understaffed and underfunded than their suburban and urban peers. As a result of history and current need, rural LHDs are more likely than their urban peers to be providers of direct health services, leading to relatively lower levels of population-focused activities. This review examines the double disparity faced by rural LHDs and their constituents: pervasively poorer health behaviors and outcomes and a historical lack of investment by local, state, and federal public health entities

    Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied in p-wave resonances in Ag by measuring the helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section. Transmission measurements on natural Ag were performed in the energy range 32 to 422 eV with the time-of-flight method at the Manuel Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. A total of 15 p-wave neutron resonances were studied in 107Ag and ninep-wave resonances in 109Ag. Statistically significant asymmetries were observed for eight resonances in 107Ag and for four resonances in109Ag. An analysis treating the PNC matrix elements as random variables yields a weak spreading width of Γw=(2.67-1.21+2.65)×10-7 eV for107Ag and Γw=(1.30-0.74+2.49)×10-7 eV for 109Ag

    Parity nonconservation (PNC) was studied in p-wave resonances in indium by measuring the helicity dependence of the neutron total cross section in the neutron energy range 6.0–316 eV with the time-of-flight method at LANSCE. A total of 36 p-wave neutron resonances were studied in 115In, and statistically significant asymmetries were observed for nine cases. An analysis treating the PNC matrix elements as random variables yields a weak matrix element of M=(0.67-0.12+0.16) meV and a weak spreading width of Γw=(1.30-0.43+0.76)×10-7 eV

    Synthesis and structural characterization of the peptide epitope of the ovarian cancer biomarker CA125 (MUC16)

    A highly conserved region of 21 amino acids flanked by cysteine residues, contained within a larger repeated domain, has been proposed to be the antibody-binding site in the ovarian cancer biomarker CA125 (MUC16). In this study solid-phase peptide synthesis with Fmoc protection chemistry was used to assemble a 21-mer peptide corresponding to the most frequently occurring antibody binding sequence in CA125. Potentially significant sequence variants were also synthesized. Peptide secondary structure was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, revealing the consensus sequence peptide to be largely unstructured at physiological pH whether the cysteine residues were reduced or were oxidized to form an intramolecular disulfide bond. Substitution of serine for proline at position 8 (P8S) results in ÎČ-sheet formation in peptides involved in intramolecular disulfide bonds. This ÎČ-sheet structure does not persist in peptides incapable of intramolecular disulfide bonding because of sequence nor in peptides treated with the reducing agent dithiothreitol. In CA125, P8S is predicted to occur in ~25% of repeat domains, suggesting that this structural motif is a non-negligible contributor to overall structure and function. These findings suggest that future structural characterization efforts of CA125 should be especially mindful of the amino acid sequence and oxidation state of the protein

    Differential cross sections for pion charge exchange on the proton at 27.5 MeV

    We have measured pion single charge exchange differential cross sections on the proton at 27.5 MeV incident π−\pi^- kinetic energy in the center of momentum angular range between 0∘0^\circ and 55∘55^\circ.
