Gyroscope deviation from geodesic motion: quasiresonant oscillations on a circular orbit

    Get PDF
General relativistic spin-orbit interaction leads to the quasiresonant oscillation of the gyroscope mass center along the orbital normal. The beating amplitude does not include the speed of light and equals the ratio of the intrinsic momentum of the gyroscope to its orbital momentum. The modulation frequency equals the angular velocity of the geodetic precession that prevents the oscillation from resonance. The oscillation represents the precession of the gyroscope orbital momentum. Within an acceptable time the oscillation amplitude reaches the values that are amenable to being analyzed experimentally. Taking into account the source oblateness decreases the beating amplitude and increases the modulation frequency by the factor that is equal to the ratio of the quadrupole precession velocity to the geodetic precession velocity. The period of the quadrupole precession turns out to be a quite sufficient time to form a measurable amplitude of the oscillation.Comment: 5 pages, LaTeX2e, 1 eps figure, to appear in J. Exp. Theor. Building the capacity to solve complex health challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa : CARTA’s multidisciplinary PhD training

    Get PDF
Objectives: To develop a curriculum (Joint Advanced Seminars- JAS) that produced PhD fellows who understood that health is an outcome of multiple determinants within complex environments and that approaches from a range of disciplines is required to address health and development within the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa. We sought to attract PhD fellows, supervisors and teaching faculty from a range of disciplines into the program. Methods: Multidisciplinary teams developed the JAS curriculum. CARTA PhD fellowships were open to academics in consortium member institutions, irrespective of primary discipline, interested in doing a PhD in public and population health. Supervisors and JAS faculty were recruited from CARTA institutions. We use routine JAS evaluation data (closed and open ended questions) collected from PhD fellows at every JAS, a survey of one CARTA cohort and an external evaluation of CARTA to assess the impact of the JAS curriculum on learning. Results: We describe our pedagogic approach arguing its centrality to an appreciation of multiple disciplines and illustrate how it promotes working in multidisciplinary ways. CARTA has attracted PhD fellows, supervisors and JAS teaching faculty from across a range of disciplines. Evaluations indicate PhD fellows have a greater appreciation of how disciplines other than their own are important to understand health and its determinants and an appreciation and capacity to employ mixed methods research. Conclusions: In the short-term, we have been effective in promoting an understanding of multidisciplinarity resulting in fellows using methods from beyond their discipline of origin. This curriculum has international application

SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL AS THE BASIS OF PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION: PROBLEMS OF MODERN DEVELOPMENT

    Get PDF
An article in a scientific journal is the key element of modern scholarly communication system, in which scientific journals act as conductors of national science and researchers to the international level. Integration of Russian scientific journals into the global knowledge system and improving their competitiveness are necessary conditions for improving the competitiveness of Russian science itself.Today, we see a low quality of Russian scientific periodicals with an excessive number of journals. The highly competitive environment and the total use of bibliometric approaches in the research and assessment of science born unfair race for indicators, developing imitation science. The study aims to analyze, determine and propose solutions of topical issues of Russian scientific journals. The article is a case study of the oldest monthly scientific and production journal “Occupational Safety in Industry”. The transformation of the work of the editorial board is considered within the 2016–2019 period. We analyze the history of formation, development and the common problems of restructuring the activities of the editorial boards that have occurred in recent years. It is shown that the formalization of scientometric indicators and their impact on funding cause a sharp increase in the number of authors with multiple affiliations. In general, the use of bibliometrics in Russia has generated a number of systemic risks that threaten the development of national science. The study formulates the tasks and nearest prospects for the development of scientific journals as the basis for a changing scholarly communication system. It is necessary to develop the qualitative scientometrics with new scientometric indices and qualitative author-evaluating indicators (with more precise scientometrics, new tools will appear, including those for identifying dishonest scientists). To improve the evaluation system of Russian scientific journals, we propose: improving the generally accepted scientometric methods taking into account Russian specifics and introducing a system for assessing and monitoring the quality of Russian scientific journals, combining the use of bibliometric information and independent expert evaluation. The creation of high-quality scientometrics is possible with the use of artificial intelligence systems. The proposed steps will build a self-regulatory ecosystem on the Russian space of scholarly communication with well-functioning high-quality expertise, which will determine the future of scientific journals

WOS: 000261979300007PubMed: 19096209Comparative studies among seven populations of 2n = 60 S. leucodon employing classic cytogenetics (G-bands, C-bands, AgNOR-staining), fluorochrome staining, and fluorescence in situ hybridization of telomeric and rDNA probes are reported here for the first time. The studied specimens were assigned to two cytotypes: 2n = 60W and 2n = 60R. The basic karyotype of both cytotypes consisted of eight pairs of subtelocentric and 21 pairs of acrocentric autosomes, subtelocentric X and acrocentric Y chromosomes. Both cytotypes had variable numbers of B-chromosomes (1-3) and variable numbers of autosomal arms (NFa = 74-76) caused by amplification (deletion) of heterochromatin short arms in the second pair. The short arms of subtelocentric chromosomes were comprised of heterochromatin in both cytotypes. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) and rDNA clusters were detected at telomeric sites of the short arms in pairs Nos. 3, 5, 6, 9, and 13 in cytotype W, and in the short arms of pair No. 6, 8, 12, 13, and 16 in cytotype R. Different locations of rDNA clusters allowed unambiguous discrimination between two S. leucodon cytotypes possessing the same 2n = 60 and similar NFa (74-76) variability. Our findings suggest a high level of chromosomal divergence, which means that it is possible to consider these cytotypes as a well-differentiated, chromosomal lineage within the leucodon group.
