The space shuttle launch vehicle aerodynamic verification challenges

    Get PDF
The Space Shuttle aerodynamics and performance communities were challenged to verify the Space Shuttle vehicle (SSV) aerodynamics and system performance by flight measurements. Historically, launch vehicle flight test programs which faced these same challenges were unmanned instrumented flights of simple aerodynamically shaped vehicles. However, the manned SSV flight test program made these challenges more complex because of the unique aerodynamic configuration powered by the first man-rated solid rocket boosters (SRB). The analyses of flight data did not verify the aerodynamics or performance preflight predictions of the first flight of the Space Transportation System (STS-1). However, these analyses have defined the SSV aerodynamics and verified system performance. The aerodynamics community also was challenged to understand the discrepancy between the wind tunnel and flight defined aerodynamics. The preflight analysis challenges, the aerodynamic extraction challenges, and the postflight analyses challenges which led to the SSV system performance verification and which will lead to the verification of the operational ascent aerodynamics data base are presented

Consolidating Heterogeneous Enterprise Data for Named Entity Linking and Web Intelligence

Linking named entities to structured knowledge sources paves the way for state-of-the-art Web intelligence applications which assign sentiment to the correct entities, identify trends, and reveal relations between organizations, persons and products. For this purpose this paper introduces Recognyze, a named entity linking component that uses background knowledge obtained from linked data repositories, and outlines the process of transforming heterogeneous data silos within an organization into a linked enterprise data repository which draws upon popular linked open data vocabularies to foster interoperability with public data sets. The presented examples use comprehensive real-world data sets from Orell Füssli Business Information, Switzerland's largest business information provider. The linked data repository created from these data sets comprises more than nine million triples on companies, the companies' contact information, key people, products and brands. We identify the major challenges of tapping into such sources for named entity linking, and describe required data pre-processing techniques to use and integrate such data sets, with a special focus on disambiguation and ranking algorithms. Finally, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation based on business news from the New Journal of Zurich and AWP Financial News to illustrate how these techniques improve the performance of the Recognyze named entity linking component

Continuous subcutaneous administration of high-dose salmon calcitonin in bone metastasis: Pain control and beta-endorphin plasma levels

This prospective nonrandomized trial was performed to evaluate the efficacy of salmon calcitonin (sCT) in controlling pain related to bone metastasis in cancer patients and the relation of sCT's analgesic efficacy with beta-endorphin blood levels. The study group consisted of 22 cancer patients with bone metastases (male 13 and female 9, age range 38-77 years). Pain control was first achieved by continuous subcutaneous (sc) morphine administration. The next increase in pain was managed with continuous sc administration of 400 IU/day sCT. Beta-endorphin blood levels were measured before and during sCT administration. The first measurement was taken before sCT administration; subsequent measurement occurred at 12, 24, and 48 hours and 7 days after the commencement of treatment. Pain scores were monitored by a visual analogue scale. A complete blood count and a biochemical screening profile were taken before the administration of calcitonin and also on the seventh and the fifteenth day of the administration. The results showed a satisfactory analgesic effect. The mean pain score before the calcitonin administration was 4.43 and the score on the seventh day was 1.17. The gradual reduction of pain score was associated with an increase in beta- endorphin blood levels (increase to 147.2% of baseline on the seventh treatment day). In three cases, no satisfactory analgesic effect was obtained and pain control was achieved by increasing the continuous sc morphine dosage. No significant side effects were observed. These data suggest that sCT in high doses may be a useful adjuvant analgesic when combined with low doses of morphine in continuous sc administration for the management of metastatic bone pain
