    Discovery Potential for New Phenomena

    We examine the ability of future facilities to discover and interpret non-supersymmetric new phenomena. We first explore explicit manifestations of new physics, including extended gauge sectors, leptoquarks, exotic fermions, and technicolor models.     B(Ds^+ -> l^+ nu) and the Decay Constant f_(D_s^+)

    I report final CLEO-c results on the purely leptonic decays of the D_s^+ -> l^+ nu, for the cases when l^+ is a mu^+ or tau^+, when it decays into pi^+ anti-nu, using 314/pb of data at 4.170 GeV. I also include preliminary results from the tau^+ -> e^+ nu anti-nu channel using 195/pb. Combining both we measure f_{D_s}= 275 +/- 10 +/- 5 MeV, and f_{D_s^+}/{f_{D^+}=1.24 +/- 0.10 =/- 0.03 .Comment: Presented at "The 2007 Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics," Manchester, England, 19-25 July 2007, to appear in the proceedings.     Physical degrees of freedom in stabilized brane world models

    We consider brane world models with interbrane separation stabilized by the Goldberger-Wise scalar field. For arbitrary background, or vacuum configurations of the gravitational and scalar fields in such models, we construct the second variation Lagrangian, study its gauge invariance, find the corresponding equations of motion and decouple them in a suitable gauge. We also derive an effective four-dimensional Lagrangian for such models, which describes the massless graviton, a tower of massive gravitons and a tower of massive scalars. It is shown that for a special choice of the background solution the masses of the graviton excitations may be of the order of a few TeV, the radion mass of the order of 100 GeV, the inverse size of the extra dimension being tens of GeV. In this case the coupling of the radion to matter on the negative tension brane is approximately the same as in the unstabilized model with the same values of the fundamental five-dimensional energy scale and the interbrane distance.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, corrected typos, amended the normalization constants of the scalar modes and their coupling constants to matte

    Celecoxib decreases prostaglandin E\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e concentrations in nipple aspirate fluid from high risk postmenopausal women and women with breast cancer

    Background Celecoxib inhibits PGE2 production in cancerous tissue. We previously reported that PGE2 levels in nipple aspirate fluid (NAF) and plasma were not decreased in women at increased breast cancer risk who received celecoxib 200 mg twice daily (bid). The endpoints of the current study were to determine if a short course of celecoxib 400 mg bid would decrease PGE2 levels in women 1) at increased breast cancer risk, and 2) with established breast cancer. Methods NAF and plasma samples were collected before, 2 weeks after taking celecoxib 400 mg bid, and two weeks after washout from 26 women who were at increased breast cancer risk. From 13 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer, NAF from the incident breast and plasma were collected before and on average 2 weeks after taking celecoxib. Additionally, in nine of the 13 women with breast cancer, NAF was collected from the contralateral breast. Results No consistent change in NAF or plasma PGE2 levels was noted in high risk premenopausal women. NAF PGE2 levels decreased after celecoxib administration in postmenopausal high risk women (p = 0.02), and in both the NAF (p = 0.02) and plasma (p = 0.03) of women with breast cancer. Conclusion Celecoxib 400 mg bid taken on average for 2 weeks significantly decreased NAF, but not plasma, PGE2 levels in postmenopausal high risk women, and decreased both NAF and plasma PGE2 levels in women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. PGE2 levels may predict celecoxib breast cancer prevention and treatment efficacy. Our observations are preliminary, and larger studies to confirm and extend these findings are warranted

    2011 - 2012The In honorem sanctae crucis of Hrabanus Maurus consists of 28 carmina figurata, in which text and image are interwoven into multiple complex unities. This work, rather than employing text and image in parallel, uses the visual level to create multiple levels of language, while the visual level in turn is constituted by the linguistic levels. Each carmen relates some aspect of the universe to the cross of Christ. They combine, thus, into a structured whole devoted to honoring the cross and displaying it as the fundamental structuring principle of the universe. My thesis analyzes the complex internal structure of this work, considers how it communicates with its diverse audiences, and attempts to elicit its philosophical and theological content. Christ, as creator and totality of being, redeems all creation, opening the way to Heaven for the saved, while the cross itself becomes the metaphysical, metacosmic and metatemporal principle and the means through which Christ sends grace into the world. The correct response of angels and men to this event is ever-lasting praise, which the In honorem recommends, defends, justifies and embodies.     pMSSM Benchmark Models for Snowmass 2013

    We present several benchmark points in the phenomenological Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (pMSSM). We select these models as experimentally well-motivated examples of the MSSM which predict the observed Higgs mass and dark matter relic density while evading the current LHC searches. We also use benchmarks to generate spokes in parameter space by scaling the mass parameters in a manner which keeps the Higgs mass and relic density approximately constant.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
