as a discovery tool for bosons at the LHC
The Forward-Backward Asymmetry (AFB) in physics is commonly only
perceived as the observable which possibly allows one to interpret a
signal by distinguishing different models of such (heavy) spin-1 bosons. In
this article, we examine the potential of AFB in setting bounds on or even
discovering a at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and show that it
might be a powerful tool for this purpose. We analyze two different scenarios:
s with a narrow and wide width, respectively. We find that in both

A chemical, mechanical, and tribological analysis of DLC coatings deposited by magnetron sputtering
Diamond-like carbon is one of the most studied and used solid lubricants on the market. Despite this large use and its outstanding mechanical and tribological properties, there are still some unclear aspects related to its self-lubricant properties, and some drawbacks in the deposition methods. We deposited soft DLC films on Si(100), iron, and stainless steel substrates by PVD magnetron sputtering technique with a Cr/CrN adhesive interlayer. The DLC films were characterized from a chemical, mechanical, and tribological point of view. Our aim was to connect the coating chemical and mechanical characteristics to the different conditions used for the deposition, such as discharge power and substrate-target distance. We found a stronger sp(3) dependence on the discharge power for DLC deposited closer to the target. The tribological results did not depend on the chosen substrate-target distance, but rather on the hardness of the substrate. This could be ascribed to the better mechanical coupling of soft DLC films on harder substrates
First trimester exposure to anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs and the risks of major congenital anomalies: a United Kingdom population-based cohort study.
BACKGROUND: Despite their widespread use the effects of taking benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics during pregnancy on the risk of major congenital anomaly (MCA) are uncertain. The objectives were to estimate absolute and relative risks of MCAs in children exposed to specific anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs taken in the first trimester of pregnancy, compared with children of mothers with depression and/or anxiety but not treated with medication and children of mothers without diagnosed mental illness during pregnancy. METHODS: We identified singleton children born to women aged 15-45 years between 1990 and 2010 from a large United Kingdom primary care database. We calculated absolute risks of MCAs for children with first trimester exposures of different anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs and used logistic regression with a generalised estimating equation to compare risks adjusted for year of childbirth, maternal age, smoking, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS: Overall MCA prevalence was 2.7% in 1,159 children of mothers prescribed diazepam, 2.9% in 379 children with temazepam, 2.5% in 406 children with zopiclone, and 2.7% in 19,193 children whose mothers had diagnosed depression and/or anxiety but no first trimester drug exposures. When compared with 2.7% in 351,785 children with no diagnosed depression/anxiety nor medication use, the adjusted odds ratios were 1.02 (99% confidence interval 0.63-1.64) for diazepam, 1.07 (0.49-2.37) for temazepam, 0.96 (0.42-2.20) for zopiclone and 1.27 (0.43-3.75) for other anxiolytic/hypnotic drugs and 1.01 (0.90-1.14) for un-medicated depression/anxiety. Risks of system-specific MCAs were generally similar in children exposed and not exposed to such medications. CONCLUSIONS: We found no evidence for an increase in MCAs in children exposed to benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics in the first trimester of pregnancy. These findings suggest that prescription of these drugs during early pregnancy may be safe in terms of MCA risk, but findings from other studies are required before safety can be confirmed
Maternal depression, antidepressant prescriptions, and congenital anomaly risk in offspring: a population-based cohort study
OBJECTIVE: To estimate risks of major congenital anomaly (MCA) among children of mothers prescribed antidepressants during early pregnancy or diagnosed with depression but without antidepressant prescriptions. DESIGN: Population-based cohort study.
SETTING: Linked UK maternal–child primary care records.
POPULATION: A total of 349Â 127 singletons liveborn between 1990 and 2009.
METHODS: Odds ratios adjusted for maternal sociodemographics and comorbidities (aORs) were calculated for MCAs, comparing women with first-trimester selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and women with diagnosed but unmedicated depression, or women without diagnosed depression.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Fourteen system-specific MCA groups classified according to the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies and five specific heart anomaly groups. RESULTS: Absolute risks of MCA were 2.7% (95% confidence interval, 95% CI, 2.6–2.8%) in children of mothers without diagnosed depression, 2.8% (95% CI 2.5–3.2%) in children of mothers with unmedicated depression, and 2.7% (95% CI 2.2–3.2%) and 3.1% (95% CI 2.2–4.1%) in children of mothers with SSRIs or TCAs, respectively. Compared with women without depression, MCA overall was not associated with unmedicated depression (aOR 1.07, 95% CI 0.96–1.18), SSRIs (aOR 1.01, 95% CI 0.88–1.17), or TCAs (aOR 1.09, 95% CI 0.87–1.38). Paroxetine was associated with increased heart anomalies (absolute risk 1.4% in the exposed group compared with 0.8% in women without depression; aOR 1.78, 95% CI 1.09–2.88), which decreased marginally when compared with women with diagnosed but unmedicated depression (aOR 1.67, 95% CI 1.00–2.80).
CONCLUSIONS: Overall MCA risk did not increase with maternal depression or with antidepressant prescriptions. Paroxetine was associated with increases of heart anomalies, although this could represent a chance finding from a large number of comparisons undertaken
Experimental Study of the Effects of Three Types of Meat on Endothelial Function in a Group of Healthy Volunteers
Background: There is a relationship between atherosclerotic risk factors and increased vascular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidized LDL and ROS may directly cause endothelial dysfunction by reducing endothelial nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability. The semi-essential amino acid L-arginine is the only substrate for NO synthesis in vascular endothelial cells. Therefore, this amino acid improves endothelial function and plays a role in the prevention and/or treatment of multiple cardiovascular diseases: atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes and so on. To determine the effects of three different protein matrices (250 g Fillet of Beef, FB; Chicken Raised on the Ground, CRG; Free-Range Chicken, FRC) with a known content of arginine on the cardiovascular workload, vascular compliance and urinary excretion of some parameters of endothelial function as TGF–Beta, NO (nitrate e nitrite) in a group of healthy volunteers. Materials and methods: We enrolled 10 men to study the behavior of Systolic, Diastolic, Mean, and Pulse Blood Pressure, of Vascular Resistances, of Macro and Micro Vascular Elasticity, of urinary excretion of TGF-β and Nitric Oxide as ratio of creatinine before and after two hours of each meal. The cardiovascular parameters are determined by HDI/Pulse Wave CR 2000 (Hypertension Diagnostic Inc, Eagan, MN); TGF-β is analysed by Elisa method (R&D Systems) and NO by colorimetric method (Cayman). Results and Conclusion: The protein meal packed with CRG causes a significant decrease in diastolic blood pressure mean pressure and vascular resistance in urinary excretion of TGF. FB resulted in a significant decrease in vascular resistance and urinary excretion of NO, while significantly increasing the Pulse Pressure, heart rate and urinary excretion of TGF-β. FRC resulted in a significant reduction of macrovascular elasticity; increase the urinary excretion of TGF and Pulse Pressure. We can conclude that CRG meat looks better both in terms of metabolic and cardiovascular load especially at endothelial level
Optical and near-infrared observations of SN 2011dh - The first 100 days
We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry and spectroscopy of the
Type IIb supernova (SN) 2011dh for the first 100 days. We complement our
extensive dataset with SWIFT ultra-violet (UV) and Spitzer mid-infrared (MIR)
data to build a UV to MIR bolometric lightcurve using both photometric and
spectroscopic data. Hydrodynamical modelling of the SN based on this bolometric
lightcurve have been presented in Bersten (2012). We find that the absorption
minimum for the hydrogen lines is never seen below ~11000 km/s but approaches
this value as the lines get weaker. This suggests that the interface between
the helium core and hydrogen rich envelope is located near this velocity in
agreement with the Bersten et al. (2012) He4R270 ejecta model. Spectral
modelling of the hydrogen lines using this ejecta model supports the conclusion
and we find a hydrogen mass of 0.01-0.04 solar masses to be consistent with the
observed spectral evolution. We estimate that the photosphere reaches the
helium core at 5-7 days whereas the helium lines appear between ~10 and ~15
days, close to the photosphere and then move outward in velocity until ~40
days. This suggests that increasing non-thermal excitation due to decreasing
optical depth for the gamma-rays is driving the early evolution of these lines.
We also provide and discuss pre- and post-explosion observations of the SN site
which shows a reduction by 75 percent in flux at the position of the yellow
supergiant coincident with SN 2011dh. The B, V and r band decline rates of
0.0073, 0.0090 and 0.0053 mag/day respectively are consistent with the
remaining flux being emitted by the SN. Hence we find that the star was indeed
the progenitor of SN 2011dh as previously suggested by Maund et al. (2011) and
