Relating leptogenesis parameters to light neutrino masses

    Get PDF
We obtain model independent relations among neutrino masses and leptogenesis parameters. We find exact relations that involve the CP asymmetries ϵNα\epsilon_{N_\alpha}, the washout parameters m~α\tilde m_\alpha and θαβ\theta_{\alpha\beta}, and the neutrino masses mim_i and MαM_\alpha, as well as powerful inequalities that involve just m~α\tilde m_\alpha and mim_i. We prove that the Yukawa interactions of at least two of the heavy singlet neutrinos are in the strong washout region (m~α103eV\tilde m_\alpha\gg10^{-3} eV).Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

Future oriented imagery rescripting facilitates conducting behavioral experiments in social anxiety

Distressing mental images are common in anxiety disorders and can make it difficult for patients to confront feared situations. This study examined whether imagery rescripting focused on a feared social situation prepares participants to engage in a feared situation. Sixty healthy individuals were asked to formulate a behavioral experiment to test negative beliefs about a social situation they feared. They were assigned to one of two groups: imagery rescripting focused on the feared outcome of the behavioral experiment or no imagery rescripting (i.e., a break). All participants were then asked to complete ratings scales and to conduct the behavioral experiment. Before the behavioral experiment, the imagery rescripting condition, compared to the control condition, showed reduced anticipated probability and severity of the feared outcome, lower anxiety and helplessness levels, and increased willingness to conduct the behavioral experiment. Imagery-based interventions focused on feared outcomes seem promising to prepare anxious individuals to engage in treatment

Study of flavour dependencies in leptogenesis

We study the impact of flavours on the efficiency factors and give analytical and numerical results of the baryon asymmetry taking into account the different charged lepton Yukawa contributions and the complete (diagonal and off-diagonal) LL to BLB-L conversion AA matrix. With this treatment we update the lower bound on the lightest right-handed neutrino mass.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. typos corrected, some formulae modified. 2 figures and discussion adde

The Effect of Imagery Rescripting on Prospective Mental Imagery of a Feared Social Situation

Negative mental images in social anxiety disorder (SAD) are often rooted in autobiographical memories of formative, distressing life events. In the present study, 25 participants with SAD retrieved an idiosyncratic negative mental image and associated autobiographical memory. Participants were then randomly assigned either to a single-session of imagery rescripting (IR) targeting the retrieved autobiographical memory or to a non-intervention control condition (no-IR). Outcomes were assessed one week later. Compared to control participants, those who received IR experienced substantial reduction in SAD symptoms accompanied by more positive and less negative appraisals of their autobiographical memories. Moreover, IR relative to no-IR participants reported marked shifts in the content, validity, and accuracy of their memory-derived negative core beliefs about self and others, but not about the world. Results support the promise of IR as a stand-alone intervention for SAD and suggest important directions for future research to enhance our understanding of the cognitive mechanisms that underlie its effects

Water and Solute Content of Tree Trunks

Bi-weekly samples of wood were taken from two species of conifers and three species of dicots from September to April. From the samples water content and solute content of each tree were determined. From soil samples taken beneath each tree the soil moisture was determined. The water content in the dicots was high in winter and low in the fall and spring, and in the conifers it was high in the fall and decreased through the winter to low values in the spring. Soil water influenced the water content of the trees only in minor details. The solute content of the conifers was low compared with the dicots. High solute content in the dicots occurred in February after rising during the fall and winter. Tree trunks apparently did not fill with water because of the increased solute since increases in water content preceded increases in solute content

CP violation in scatterings, three body processes and the Boltzmann equations for leptogenesis

We obtain the Boltzmann equations for leptogenesis including decay and scattering processes with two and three body initial or final states. We present an explicit computation of the CP violating scattering asymmetries. We analyze their possible impact in leptogenesis, and we discuss the validity of their approximate expressions in terms of the decay asymmetry. In scenarios in which the initial heavy neutrino density vanishes, the inclusion of CP asymmetries in scatterings can enforce a cancellation between the lepton asymmetry generated at early times and the asymmetry produced at later times. We argue that a sizeable amount of washout is crucial for spoiling this cancellation, and we show that in the regimes in which the washouts are particularly weak, the inclusion of CP violation in scatterings yields a reduction in the final value of the lepton asymmetry. In the strong washout regimes the inclusion of CP violation in scatterings still leads to a significant enhancement of the lepton asymmetry at high temperatures; however, due to the independence from the early conditions that is characteristic of these regimes, the final value of the lepton asymmetry remains approximately unchanged.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures.
