Experimental assessment of the speed of light perturbation in free-fall absolute gravimeters
Precision absolute gravity measurements are growing in importance, especially
in the context of the new definition of the kilogram. For the case of free-fall
absolute gravimeters with a Michelson-type interferometer tracking the position
of a free falling body, one of the effects that needs to be taken into account
is the speed of light perturbation due to the finite speed of propagation of
light. This effect has been extensively discussed in the past, and there is at
present a disagreement between different studies. In this work, we present the
analysis of new data and confirm the result expected from the theoretical
analysis applied nowadays in free-fall gravimeters. We also review the standard
derivations of this effect (by using phase shift or Doppler effect arguments)
and show their equivalence
SAVERS: SAR ATR with Verification Support Based on Convolutional Neural Network
We propose a new convolutional neural network (CNN) which performs coarse and
fine segmentation for end-to-end synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic
target recognition (ATR) system. In recent years, many CNNs for SAR ATR using
deep learning have been proposed, but most of them classify target classes from
fixed size target chips extracted from SAR imagery. On the other hand, we
proposed the CNN which outputs the score of the multiple target classes and a
background class for each pixel from the SAR imagery of arbitrary size and
multiple targets as fine segmentation. However, it was necessary for humans to
judge the CNN segmentation result. In this report, we propose a CNN called SAR
ATR with verification support (SAVERS), which performs region-wise (i.e.
coarse) segmentation and pixel-wise segmentation. SAVERS discriminates between
target and non-target, and classifies multiple target classes and non-target
class by coarse segmentation. This report describes the evaluation results of
SAVERS using the Moving and Stationary Target Acquisition and Recognition

Increased prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi infections in Bernese Mountain Dogs: a possible breed predisposition
BACKGROUND: Glomerulonephritis in dogs has been associated with B. burgdorferi infections. In Bernese Mountain Dogs with glomerulonephritis antibodies against B. burgdorferi were found in most dogs, raising the question if the breed is predisposed to infections with B. burgdorferi. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi sensu lato in a well defined population of Bernese Mountain Dogs and to compare this prevalence with data from dogs of other breeds. RESULTS: 160 Bernese Mountain Dogs and 62 control dogs (large breed dogs with long hair) were included. All dogs were considered healthy according to a questionnaire filled out by the owner, complete blood count, chemistry panel, urinalysis and urine culture. Bernese Mountain Dogs and control dogs were kept similar in similar environments. Seroprevalence of B. burgdorferi was assessed by ELISA and Western blot and was 58% in Bernese Mountain Dogs compared to 15% in control dogs. This difference was significant. Neither antibodies against leptospires nor vaccination or hair coat color influenced the results. CONCLUSIONS: The cause of the considerably higher prevalence of antibodies against B. burgdorferi in Bernese Mountain Dogs and its consequences are not known. A breed predisposition can be suspected
Follow-up of Bernese Mountain dogs and other dogs with serologically diagnosed Borrelia burgdorferi infection: What happens to seropositive animals?
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Data on the long-term outcome of <it>B. burgdorferi </it>infections in adult dogs are sparse. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether Bernese Mountain dogs with serological evidence of natural <it>B. burgdorferi </it>infection more often develop signs such as lameness, azotemia or proteinuria during a follow-up period of 2.5 to 3.0 years. Seropositive Bernese Mountain dogs were compared to seronegative Bernese Mountain dogs and to seropositive and seronegative control dogs of other breeds.</p> <p>Dogs included in a previous study on the prevalence of antibodies against <it>B. burgdorferi </it>in Bernese Mountain dogs were re-evaluated. Antibodies against <it>B. burgdorferi </it>were determined using an ELISA with a whole-cell sonicate as antigen and results were confirmed using a Western blot assay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fifty-three Bernese Mountain dogs and 30 control dogs were re-evaluated. During the first examination, azotemia was diagnosed in 6 Bernese Mountain dogs and during the second examination in 11 Bernese Mountain dogs. No control dogs had azotemia in this study. In seropositive dogs there was no increase in lameness or signs of renal disease over time.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It may be concluded that antibodies against <it>B. burgdorferi </it>determined by whole cell ELISA and confirmed by Western blot were neither associated with the development of lameness nor with signs of renal disease like azotemia or proteinuria in dogs observed over a period of 2.5 to 3.0 years.</p

Phase-coherence threshold and vortex-glass state in diluted Josephson-junction arrays in a magnetic field
We study numerically the interplay of phase coherence and vortex-glass state
in two-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays with average rational values of
flux quantum per plaquette and random dilution of junctions. For ,
we find evidence of a phase coherence threshold value , below the
percolation concentration of diluted junctions , where the superconducting
transition vanishes. For the array behaves as a
zero-temperature vortex glass with nonzero linear resistance at finite
temperatures. The zero-temperature critical currents are insensitive to
variations in in the vortex glass region while they are strongly

Inhaled nitric oxide for high-altitude pulmonary edema
BACKGROUND. Pulmonary hypertension is a hallmark of high-altitude pulmonary edema and may contribute to its pathogenesis. When administered by inhalation, nitric oxide, an endothelium-derived relaxing factor, attenuates the pulmonary vasoconstriction produced by short-term hypoxia. METHODS. We studied the effects of inhaled nitric oxide on pulmonary-artery pressure and arterial oxygenation in 18 mountaineers prone to high-altitude pulmonary edema and 18 mountaineers resistant to this condition in a high altitude laboratory (altitude, 4559 m). We also obtained lung-perfusion scans before and during nitric oxide inhalation to gain further insight into the mechanism of action of nitric oxide. RESULTS. In the high-altitude laboratory, subjects prone to high-altitude pulmonary edema had more pronounced pulmonary hypertension and hypoxemia than subjects resistant to high-altitude pulmonary edema. Arterial oxygen saturation was inversely related to the severity of pulmonary hypertension (r=-0.50, P=0.002). In subjects prone to high-altitude pulmonary edema, the inhalation of nitric oxide (40 ppm for 15 minutes) produced a decrease in mean (+/-SD) systolic pulmonary-artery pressure that was three times larger than the decrease in subjects resistant to such edema (25.9+/-8.9 vs. 8.7+/-4.8 mm Hg, P<0.001). Inhaled nitric oxide improved arterial oxygenation in the 10 subjects who had radiographic evidence of pulmonary edema (arterial oxygen saturation increased from 67+/-10 to 73+/-12 percent, P=0.047), whereas it worsened oxygenation in subjects resistant to high-altitude pulmonary edema. The nitric oxide-induced improvement in arterial oxygenation in subjects with high-altitude pulmonary edema was accompanied by a shift in blood flow in the lung away from edematous segments and toward nonedematous segments. CONCLUSIONS. The inhalation of nitric oxide improves arterial oxygenation in high-altitude pulmonary edema, and this beneficial effect may be related to its favorable action on the distribution of blood flow in the lungs. A defect in nitric nitric oxide synthesis may contribute to high-altitude pulmonary edema
Diluted Josephson-junction arrays in a magnetic field: phase coherence and vortex glass thresholds
The effects of random dilution of junctions on a two-dimensional
Josephson-junction array in a magnetic field are considered. For rational
values of the average flux quantum per plaquette , the superconducting
transition temperature vanishes, for increasing dilution, at a critical value
, while the vortex ordering remains stable up to , much
below the value corresponding to the geometric percolation threshold. For
, the array behaves as a zero-temperature vortex-glass.
Numerical results for from defect energy calculations are presented

The catalytic role of glutathione transferases in heterologous anthocyanin biosynthesis
Anthocyanins are ubiquitous plant pigments used in a variety of technological applications. Yet, after over a century of research, the penultimate biosynthetic step to anthocyanidins attributed to the action of leucoanthocyanidin dioxygenase has never been efficiently reconstituted outside plants, preventing the construction of heterologous cell factories. Through biochemical and structural analysis, here we show that anthocyanin-related glutathione transferases, currently implicated only in anthocyanin transport, catalyse an essential dehydration of the leucoanthocyanidin dioxygenase product, flavan-3,3,4-triol, to generate cyanidin. Building on this knowledge, introduction of anthocyanin-related glutathione transferases into a heterologous biosynthetic pathway in baker's yeast results in >35-fold increased anthocyanin production. In addition to unravelling the long-elusive anthocyanin biosynthesis, our findings pave the way for the colourants' heterologous microbial production and could impact the breeding of industrial and ornamental plants
Current-voltage characteristics of diluted Josephson-junction arrays: scaling behavior at current and percolation threshold
Dynamical simulations and scaling arguments are used to study the
current-voltage (IV) characteristics of a two-dimensional model of resistively
shunted Josephson-junction arrays in presence of percolative disorder, at zero
external field. Two different limits of the Josephson-coupling concentration
are considered, where is the percolation threshold. For
and zero temperature, the IV curves show power-law behavior above a disorder
dependent critical current. The power-law behavior and critical exponents are
consistent with a simple scaling analysis. At and finite temperature ,
the results show the scaling behavior of a T=0 superconducting transition. The
resistance is linear but vanishes for decreasing with an apparent
exponential behavior. Crossover to non-linearity appears at currents
proportional to , with a thermal-correlation length exponent
consistent with the corresponding value for the diluted XY model at
