Leveling device settings and transverse joint material testing for full depth precast panel bridge deck assembly

Across the United States there are many deteriorating highway bridges that are in need of replacement. In 2013, the Federal Highway Administration estimated that one-fourth of the Nation\u27s bridges are in need of rehabilitation, repair, or complete replacement. (FHWA, 2013) To address these needs, innovative techniques must be developed to reduce both lifecycle costs and construction times while increasing both the quality and safety of bridge rehabilitation projects. This research aims to further develop a method of integrating structural analysis software, during the modular construction process, to predict the leveling device settings for precast prestressed panels to ensure the desired profile of the bridge deck is met. This research also includes the material testing of structural adhesives for use in full depth precast panel assembly. This research concludes that the integrated use of structural analysis software enables the accurate prediction of leveling screw device settings to replicate the desired profile of a full depth precast concrete bridge deck

Splitting in the Excitation Spectrum of A Bose-Einstein Condensate Undergoing Strong Rabi Oscillations

We report on a measurement of splitting in the excitation spectrum of a condensate driven by an optical travelling wave. Experimental results are compared to a numerical solution of the Gross Pitaevskii equation, and analyzed by a simple two level model and by the more complete band theory, treating the driving beams as an optical lattice. In this picture, the splitting is a manifestation of the energy gap between neighboring bands that opens on the boundary of the Brillouin zone.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Damping of bulk excitations over an elongated BEC - the role of radial modes

We report the measurement of Beliaev damping of bulk excitations in cigar shaped Bose Einstein condensates of atomic vapor. By using post selection, excitation line shapes of the total population are compared with those of the undamped excitations. We find that the damping depends on the initial excitation energy of the decaying quasi particle, as well as on the excitation momentum. We model the condensate as an infinite cylinder and calculate the damping rates of the different radial modes. The derived damping rates are in good agreement with the experimentally measured ones. The damping rates strongly depend on the destructive interference between pathways for damping, due to the quantum many-body nature of both excitation and damping products.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

Decoherence and dephasing in strongly driven colliding Bose-Einstein condensates

We report on a series of measurements of decoherence and wavepacket dephasing between two colliding, strongly coupled, identical Bose-Einstein condensates. We measure, in the strong excitation regime, a suppression of the mean-field shift, compared to the shift which is observed for a weak excitation. This suppression is explained by applying the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. By selectively counting only the non-decohered fraction in a time of flight image we observe oscillations for which both inhomogeneous and Doppler broadening are suppressed, in quantitative agreement with a full Gross-Pitaevskii equation simulation. If no post selection is used, the decoherence rate due to collisions can be extracted, and is in agreement with the local density average calculated rate.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Echo spectroscopy of bulk Bogoliubov excitations in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose and demonstrate an echo method to reduce the inhomogeneous linewidth of Bogoliubov excitations, in a harmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. Our proposal includes the transfer of excitations with momentum +q to -q using a double two photon Bragg process, in which a substantial reduction of the inhomogeneous broadening is calculated. Furthermore, we predict an enhancement in the method's efficiency for low momentum due to many-body effects. The echo can also be implemented by using a four photon process, as is demonstrated experimentally.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Exploring the consistency of the SF-6D

Objective: The six dimensional health state short form (SF-6D) was designed to be derived from the short-form 36 health survey (SF-36). The purpose of this research was to compare the SF-6D index values generated from the SF 36 (SF-6D(SF-36)) with those obtained from the SF-6D administered as an independent instrument (SF-6D(Ind)). The goal was to assess the consistency of respondents answers to these two methods of deriving the SF-6D. Methods: Data were obtained from a sample of the Portuguese population (n = 414). Agreement between the instruments was assessed on the basis of a descriptive system and their indexes. The analysis of the descriptive system was performed by using a global consistency index and an identically classified index. Agreement was also explored by using correlation coefficients. Parametric tests were used to identify differences between the indexes. Regression models were estimated to understand the relationship between them. Results: The SF-6D(Ind) generates higher values than does the SF-6D(SF-36), There were significant differences between the indexes across sociodemographic groups. There was a significant ceiling effect in the SF-6D(Ind) a but not in the SF-6D(SF-36). The correlation between the indexes was high but less than what was anticipated. The global consistency index identified the dimensions with larger differences. Considerable differences were found in two dimensions, possibly as a result of different item contexts. Further research is needed to fully understand the role of the different layouts and the length of the questionnaires in the respondents' answers. Conclusions: The results show that as the SF-6D was designed to derive utilities from the SF-36 it should be used in this way and not as an independent instrument.Fundacao para a Ciencia e a Tecnologia (FCT
