Intrahepatic persistent fetal right umbilical vein: a retrospective study
Introduction: To appraise the incidence and value of intrahepatic persistent right umbilical vein (PRUV). Methods: This was a single-center study. Records of all women with a prenatal diagnosis of intrahepatic PRUV were reviewed. The inclusion criteria were women with gestational age greater than 13 weeks of gestation. Exclusion criteria were fetuses with situs abnormalities, due to the hepatic venous ambiguity, and extrahepatic PRUV. The primary outcome was the incidence of intrahepatic PRUV in our cohort. The secondary outcomes were associated malformations. Results: 219/57,079 cases (0.38%) of intrahepatic PRUV were recorded. The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 21.8 ± 2.9 weeks of gestations. PRUV was isolated in the 76.7%, while in 23.3% was associated with other major or minor abnormalities. The most common associated abnormalities were cardiovascular abnormalities (8.7%), followed by genitourinary abnormalities (6.4%), skeletal abnormalities (4.6%), and central nervous system abnormalities (4.1%). Within the cardiovascular abnormalities, the most common one was ventricular septal defect (six cases). Conclusion: In most cases PRUV is an isolated finding. Associated minor or major malformations are presented in the 23.3% of the cases, so this finding should prompt detailed prenatal assessment of the fetus, with particular regard to cardiovascular system

Dissipative dynamics at first-order quantum transitions
We investigate the effects of dissipation on the quantum dynamics of many-body systems at quantum transitions, especially considering those of the first order. This issue is studied within the paradigmatic one-dimensional quantum Ising model. We analyze the out-of-equilibrium dynamics arising from quenches of the Hamiltonian parameters and dissipative mechanisms modeled by a Lindblad master equation, with either local or global spin operators acting as dissipative operators. Analogously to what happens at continuous quantum transitions, we observe a regime where the system develops a nontrivial dynamic scaling behavior, which is realized when the dissipation parameter u (globally controlling the decay rate of the dissipation within the Lindblad framework) scales as the energy difference Δ of the lowest levels of the Hamiltonian, i.e., u∼Δ. However, unlike continuous quantum transitions where Δ is power-law suppressed, at first-order quantum transitions Δ is exponentially suppressed with increasing the system size (provided the boundary conditions do not favor any particular phase)
Role of fetal MRI in the evaluation of isolated and non-isolated corpus callosum dysgenesis: results of a cross-sectional study
PURPOSE:
The aims of this study were to characterize isolated and non-isolated forms of corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) at fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to identify early predictors of associated anomalies.
METHODS:
We retrospectively analyzed 104 fetuses with CCD undergoing MRI between 2006 and 2016. Corpus callosum, cavum septi pellucidi, biometry, presence of ventriculomegaly, gyration anomalies, cranio-encephalic abnormalities and body malformations were evaluated. Results of genetic tests were also recorded.
RESULTS:
At MRI, isolated CCD was 26.9%, the rest being associated to other abnormalities. In the isolated group, median gestational age at MRI was lower in complete agenesis than in hypoplasia (22 vs 28 weeks). In the group with additional findings, cortical dysplasia was the most frequently associated feature (P = 0.008), with a more frequent occurrence in complete agenesis (70%) versus other forms; mesial frontal lobes were more often involved than other cortical regions (P = 0.006), with polymicrogyria as the most frequent cortical malformation (40%). Multivariate analysis confirmed the association between complete agenesis and cortical dysplasia (odds ratio = 7.29, 95% confidence interval 1.51-35.21).
CONCLUSIONS:
CCD is often complicated by other intra-cranial and extra-cranial findings (cortical dysplasias as the most prevalent) that significantly affect the postnatal prognosis. The present study showed CCD with associated anomalies as more frequent than isolated (73.1%). In isolated forms, severe ventriculomegaly was a reliable herald of future appearance of associated features
Pinning of a solid--liquid--vapour interface by stripes of obstacles
We use a macroscopic Hamiltonian approach to study the pinning of a
solid--liquid--vapour contact line on an array of equidistant stripes of
obstacles perpendicular to the liquid. We propose an estimate of the density of
pinning stripes for which collective pinning of the contact line happens. This
estimate is shown to be in good agreement with Langevin equation simulation of
the macroscopic Hamiltonian. Finally we introduce a 2--dimensional mean field
theory which for small strength of the pinning stripes and for small capillary
length gives an excellent description of the averaged height of the contact
line.Comment: Plain tex, 12 pages, 3 figures available upon reques
Structured request form in musculoskeletal radiology examinations (CONCERTO): results of an expert Delphi consensus—structured radiology request form for correct classification of patients to undergo radiological examinations of the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM), the Italian Society of Rheumatology (SIR) and the Italian Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (SIOT)
Purpose: To describe a Delphi consensus for the realization of a structured radiology request form for patients undergoing musculoskeletal imaging. Methods: A steering committee (four radiologists, a rheumatologist and an orthopedic surgeon) proposed a form to an expert panel (30 members, ten radiologists, ten rheumatologists and ten orthopedic surgeons). Through an online survey, the panelists voted on their level of agreement with the statements of the form using a 10-point Likert scale (1: no agreement; 10: total agreement) in a three-round process. A combination of two distinct criteria, a mean agreement level ≥ 8 and a percentage of at least 75% of responses with a value ≥ 8, was deemed as acceptable. Results: The form achieved high median ratings in all the assessed key features. During the first round, all items met the threshold to be advanced as unmodified in the next round. Additional proposed items were considered and introduced in the next round (six items in Section 1, five items in Section 2, ten items in Section 3, 11 items in Section 4, six items in Section 5, eight items in Section 6, ten items in Section 7 and eight items in Section 8). Of these items, in round 3, only six reached the threshold to be integrated into the final form. Conclusions: Implementation of a structured radiology request form can improve appropriateness and collaboration between clinicians and radiologists in musculoskeletal imaging
Effect of Video Observation and Motor Imagery on Simple Reaction Time in Cadet Pilots
Neuromotor training can improve motor performance in athletes and patients. However,
few data are available about their effect on reaction time (RT). We investigated the influence of
video observation/motor imagery (VO/MI) on simple RT to visual and auditory stimuli. The
experimental group comprised 21 cadets who performed VO/MI training over 4 weeks. Nineteen
cadets completed a sham intervention as control. The main outcome measure was RT to auditory
and visual stimuli for the upper and lower limbs. The RT to auditory stimuli improved
significantly post-intervention in both groups (control vs. experimental mean change for upper
limbs: −40 ms vs. −40 ms, p = 0.0008; for lower limbs: −50 ms vs. −30 ms, p = 0.0174). A trend towards
reduced RT to visual stimuli was observed (for upper limbs: −30 ms vs. −20 ms, p = 0.0876; for lower
limbs: −30 ms vs. −20 ms, p = 0.0675). The interaction term was not significant. Only the specific
VO/MI training produced a linear correlation between the improvement in the RT to auditory and
visual stimuli for the upper (r = 0.703) and lower limbs (r = 0.473). In conclusion, VO/MI training
does not improve RT when compared to control, but it may be useful in individuals who need to
simultaneously develop a fast response to different types of stimuli
Targeting androgen-independent pathways: new chances for patients with prostate cancer?
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the mainstay treatment for advanced prostate cancer (PC). Most patients eventually progress to a condition known as castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), characterized by lack of response to ADT. Although new androgen receptor signaling (ARS) inhibitors and chemotherapeutic agents have been introduced to overcome resistance to ADT, many patients progress because of primary or acquired resistance to these agents. This comprehensive review aims at exploring the mechanisms of resistance and progression of PC, with specific focus on alterations which lead to the activation of androgen receptor (AR)-independent pathways of survival. Our work integrates available clinical and preclinical data on agents which target these pathways, assessing their potential clinical implication in specific settings of patients. Given the rising interest of the scientific community in cancer immunotherapy strategies, further attention is dedicated to the role of immune evasion in PC
NUP98-fusion transcripts characterize different biological entities within acute myeloid leukemia: A report from the AIEOP-AML group.
In the last years, collaborative studies have joined to link the degree of genetic heterogeneity of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) to clinical outcome,1, 2 allowing risk stratification before therapy and guiding post-induction treatment of children with AML. So far, still half of these patients, whose disease is usually characterized by a grim prognosis, lack a known biomarker offering opportunities of targeted treatment
Roughening Transition in a Moving Contact Line
The dynamics of the deformations of a moving contact line on a disordered
substrate is formulated, taking into account both local and hydrodynamic
dissipation mechanisms. It is shown that both the coating transition in contact
lines receding at relatively high velocities, and the pinning transition for
slowly moving contact lines, can be understood in a unified framework as
roughening transitions in the contact line. We propose a phase diagram for the
system in which the phase boundaries corresponding to the coating transition
and the pinning transition meet at a junction point, and suggest that for
sufficiently strong disorder a receding contact line will leave a
Landau--Levich film immediately after depinning. This effect may be relevant to
a recent experimental observation in a liquid Helium contact line on a Cesium
substrate [C. Guthmann, R. Gombrowicz, V. Repain, and E. Rolley, Phys. Rev.
