A Discrete Theory of Connections on Principal Bundles
Connections on principal bundles play a fundamental role in expressing the
equations of motion for mechanical systems with symmetry in an intrinsic
fashion. A discrete theory of connections on principal bundles is constructed
by introducing the discrete analogue of the Atiyah sequence, with a connection
corresponding to the choice of a splitting of the short exact sequence.
Equivalent representations of a discrete connection are considered, and an
extension of the pair groupoid composition, that takes into account the
principal bundle structure, is introduced. Computational issues, such as the
order of approximation, are also addressed. Discrete connections provide an
intrinsic method for introducing coordinates on the reduced space for discrete
mechanics, and provide the necessary discrete geometry to introduce more
general discrete symmetry reduction. In addition, discrete analogues of the
Levi-Civita connection, and its curvature, are introduced by using the
machinery of discrete exterior calculus, and discrete connections.Comment: 38 pages, 11 figures. Fixed labels in figure
All-optical generation and photoassociative probing of sodium Bose-Einstein condensates
We demonsatrate an all optical technique to evaporatively produce sodium
Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We use a crossed-dipole trap formed from light
near 1060 nm, and a simple ramp of the intensity to force evaporation. In
addition, we introduce photoassociation as diagnostic of the trap loading
process, and show that it can be used to detect the onset of Bose-Einstein
condensation. Finally, we demonstrate the straightforward production of
multiple traps with condensates using this technique, and that some control
over the spinor state of the BEC is achieved by positioning the trap as well.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
Implementation of the Quantum Fourier Transform
The quantum Fourier transform (QFT) has been implemented on a three bit
nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum computer, providing a first step
towards the realization of Shor's factoring and other quantum algorithms.
Implementation of the QFT is presented with fidelity measures, and state
tomography. Experimentally realizing the QFT is a clear demonstration of NMR's
ability to control quantum systems.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
A general framework for nonholonomic mechanics: Nonholonomic Systems on Lie affgebroids
This paper presents a geometric description of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian
systems on Lie affgebroids subject to affine nonholonomic constraints. We
define the notion of nonholonomically constrained system, and characterize
regularity conditions that guarantee that the dynamics of the system can be
obtained as a suitable projection of the unconstrained dynamics. It is shown
that one can define an almost aff-Poisson bracket on the constraint AV-bundle,
which plays a prominent role in the description of nonholonomic dynamics.
Moreover, these developments give a general description of nonholonomic systems
and the unified treatment permits to study nonholonomic systems after or before
reduction in the same framework. Also, it is not necessary to distinguish
between linear or affine constraints and the methods are valid for explicitly
time-dependent systems.Comment: 50 page

Dynamic quantum clustering: a method for visual exploration of structures in data
A given set of data-points in some feature space may be associated with a
Schrodinger equation whose potential is determined by the data. This is known
to lead to good clustering solutions. Here we extend this approach into a
full-fledged dynamical scheme using a time-dependent Schrodinger equation.
Moreover, we approximate this Hamiltonian formalism by a truncated calculation
within a set of Gaussian wave functions (coherent states) centered around the
original points. This allows for analytic evaluation of the time evolution of
all such states, opening up the possibility of exploration of relationships
among data-points through observation of varying dynamical-distances among
points and convergence of points into clusters. This formalism may be further
supplemented by preprocessing, such as dimensional reduction through singular
value decomposition or feature filtering.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
