Does PAL work? An exploration of affect amongst First-year HE in FE students

    Get PDF
The study evaluates a peer-assisted learning (PAL) scheme as an effective strategy in alleviating levels of negative emotions and, in the process, contributes to explorations of affect in first-year students in an HE in FE environment, with a particular focus on anxiety and related emotions. Various types of anxieties are defined in the context of a student’s experience in HE, followed by an explanation of the present interventional study in an HE in FE institution, including the survey method used to collect data analyzed through SPSS. Surprisingly, the main findings are that overall anxiety and worry increased for students belonging to most faculties with time, regardless of participation in the PAL scheme. A positive finding was nonetheless that anxiety levels increased more steadily for students who belonged to the control group. The PAL scheme may have thus influenced how less anxious PAL students felt, compared to those who did not participate in the PAL scheme who were left feeling more anxious at the end of the semester

26Al in the Early Solar System: Not so Unusual After All

Recently acquired evidence shows that extrasolar asteroids exhibit over a factor of 100 variation in the iron to aluminum abundance ratio. This large range likely is a consequence of igneous differentiation that resulted from heating produced by radioactive decay of 26Al with an abundance comparable to that in the solar system's protoplanetary disk at birth. If so, the conventional view that our solar system began with an unusually high amount of 26Al should be discarded.Comment: ApJ Letters, 775, L4

    Evergreen Leasing of Aquaculture Sites

    Get PDF
Government policy on siting of aquaculture must balance the objective of providing a long planning horizon for the industry against a broader social interest of adapting lease terms to new environmental information. Evergreen leases are proposed to balance these objectives. Under an evergreen lease, the lease renewal occurs not at the end of the lease, but rather at midterm. For example, a 20-year lease might be renewed at year five or year 10. The mid-term renewal process avoids end-point biases and also creates incentives for the two parties to successfully bargain a renewal. Evergreen leases are an appropriate institution when two parties want a long-term relationship but recognize that terms of the relationship must evolve to reflect new information.aquaculture, evergreen leases, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy, Q22,

Magnetic studies of the lightly Ru doped perovskite rhodates Sr(Ru,Rh)O3_3

    Get PDF
The solid solution between the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3_3 and the enhanced paramagnetic metal SrRhO3_3 was recently reported [K. Yamaura et al., Phys. Rev. B 69 (2004) 024410], and an unexpected feature was found in the specific heat data at xx=0.9 of SrRu1x_{1-x}Rhx_xO3_3. The feature was reinvestigated further by characterizing additional samples with various Ru concentrations in the vicinity of xx=0.9. Specific heat and magnetic susceptibility data indicate that the feature reflects a peculiar magnetism of the doped perovskite, which appears only in the very narrow composition range 0.85<<xx\le0.95.Comment: Accepted for publication in a special issue of Physica B (the proceedings of SCES04

An approach to the preliminary evaluation of Closed Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) scenarios and control strategies

    Get PDF
Life support systems for manned space missions are discussed. A scenario analysis method was proposed for the initial step of comparing possible partial or total recycle scenarios. The method is discussed in detail

Application of control theory to dynamic systems simulation

    Get PDF
The application of control theory is applied to dynamic systems simulation. Theory and methodology applicable to controlled ecological life support systems are considered. Spatial effects on system stability, design of control systems with uncertain parameters, and an interactive computing language (PARASOL-II) designed for dynamic system simulation, report quality graphics, data acquisition, and simple real time control are discussed

Electronic properties of the novel 4d metallic oxide SrRhO3

    Get PDF
The novel 4d perovskite compound SrRhO3 was investigated by isovalent doping studies. The solubility limits of Ca and Ba onto Sr-site were below 80% and 20%, respectively. Although SrRhO3 was chemically compressed, approximately 5.7% by the Ca doping, no significant influence was observed on the magnetic and electrical properties.Comment: To be published in a special issue of Physica B (the proceedings of LT23

Experience with fluorine and its safe use as a propellant

The industrial and the propulsion experience with fluorine and its derivatives is surveyed. The hazardous qualities of fluorine and safe handling procedures for the substance are emphasized. Procedures which fulfill the safety requirements during ground operations for handling fluorinated propulsion systems are discussed. Procedures to be implemented for use onboard the Space Transportation System are included
