Bomen over ruimte: een studie naar de toekomstige ruimtebehoefte voor de boomteelt in de regio Boskoop

In het kader van de streekplanherziening Zuid-Holland Oost is een schatting gemaakt van de toekomstige ruimtebehoefte voor de boomteelt in de regio Boskoop tot 2015. Op basis van toekomstige ontwikkelingen in de vraag naar boomteeltproducten, de (inter)nationale concurrentiepositie van de boomteelt in de regio Boskoop en de bedrijfsstructuur is de extra ruimtebehoefte geschat op 2% per jaar. Het totale areaal boomteelt in 2015 komt hiermee op 1.435 ha (+ 335 ha), waarvan de helft pot- en containerteelt en de helft in de vollegrond. Ook zal tot 2015 de teelt onder glas gestaag toenemen. Om het boomteeltcentrum in de regio Boskoop in stand te houden is niet alleen behoefte aan extra ruimte, maar zal ook voldaan moeten worden aan een aantal kwalitatieve randvoorwaarden. De belangrijkste randvoorwaarden zijn: planologische zekerheid, ruimte voor ondersteunend glas, goede bedrijfsstructuur, goede infrastructuur, kwalitatief goed opgeleid personeel en professioneel ondernemersscha

Towards Integrated Pest Management in East Africa : a feasibility study

Pesticide risk reduction through registration of less hazardous pesticides and the promotion of nonchemical pest and disease control approaches such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for a more sustainable plant production in East Africa in order to enhance both export market access and food safety. This study gives guidance for the transition towards a further adoption of IPM in East Africa. It describes the current situation and presents the incentives for and obstacles to the East African countries. There are various initiatives to strengthen the institutional, economic, political and social aspects in the East African region. The East African Community (EAC) is working jointly on different themes, including agricultural development and reducing trade barriers. Also, in the field of pesticide legislation further steps should be made. A regional approach in establishing a framework for the registration of pesticides and bio pesticides and natural liquids would be a first step in creating the institutional environment to make actions more effective and efficient

Boskoop en Bollenstreek. Hoe innig is de samenwerking

In het kader van de streekplanherziening Zuid-Holland Oost is in opdracht van de provincie Zuid-Holland onderzoek gedaan naar de autonome ontwikkeling van het boomteeltcomplex Boskoop en de interacties met het bloembollencomplex 'De Bollenstreek'. Om het belang van het boomteeltcomplex binnen het sierteeltcomplex Zuid-Holland te duiden zijn ook de interacties met de bloemisterij in kaart gebracht. De interacties tussen Boskoop en de Bollenstreek blijven beperkt tot een gecombineerde afzet van bloembollen en een beperkt assortiment boomteeltproducten, met name vaste planten. Mede door het groeiende belang van de bloemenveilingen in de afzet van boomteeltproducten en de toenemende vraag naar visueel aantrekkelijke boomteeltproducten is de interactie tussen Boskoop en het bloemisterijcomplex Zuid-Holland veel sterker. Vanwege de aanwezigheid van een groot assortiment aan boomteeltproducten, de beschikbaarheid van veel kennis en vakmanschap, korte transportlijnen naar de veilingen en de centrale ligging heeft Boskoop een belangrijke meerwaarde binnen het sierteeltcomplex Zuid-Holland

Biphasic Oxidation of Oxy-Hemoglobin in Bloodstains

Background: In forensic science, age determination of bloodstains can be crucial in reconstructing crimes. Upon exiting the body, bloodstains transit from bright red to dark brown, which is attributed to oxidation of oxy-hemoglobin (HbO2) to methemoglobin (met-Hb) and hemichrome (HC). The fractions of HbO 2, met-Hb and HC in a bloodstain can be used for age determination of bloodstains. In this study, we further analyze the conversion of HbO2 to met-Hb and HC, and determine the effect of temperature and humidity on the conversion rates. Methodology: The fractions of HbO2, met-Hb and HC in a bloodstain, as determined by quantitative analysis of optical reflectance spectra (450–800 nm), were measured as function of age, temperature and humidity. Additionally, Optical Coherence Tomography around 1300 nm was used to confirm quantitative spectral analysis approach. Conclusions: The oxidation rate of HbO2 in bloodstains is biphasic. At first, the oxidation of HbO2 is rapid, but slows down after a few hours. These oxidation rates are strongly temperature dependent. However, the oxidation of HbO2 seems to be independent of humidity, whereas the transition of met-Hb into HC strongly depends on humidity. Knowledge of these decay rates is indispensable for translating laboratory results into forensic practice, and to enable bloodstain age determination on the crime scene
