    An Uncoupled Oscillator Model for evoked potential dynamical modelling

    A mathematical model for evoked potentials is outlined. The model has been developed by considering phase synchronisation of the underlying neurological processes. Tbe model, consisting of an ensemble of uncoupled linear oscillators with a gaussian distribution of frequencies is shown to reproduce tbe typical response of PIOO visual evoked response. Tbe model structure is parallel in form and is considered to be pbysiologically realistic. It is also sbown that tbe calculated behaviour of tbe ensemble can be generated by a 2"" order linear differential equation with time varying coefficients, thus highlighting the fact that entirely different physical structures can generate identical responses

    We investigate the distribution of single molecule line shape cumulants, κ1,κ2,...\kappa_1,\kappa_2,..., in low temperature glasses based on the sudden jump, standard tunneling model. We find that the cumulants are described by L\'evy stable laws, thus generalized central limit theorem is applicable for this problem.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    La inclusión de la perspectiva de género en la actividad jurisdiccional es una demanda sostenida de los colectivos feministas y de mujeres, dado que las sentencias tienen un poder performativo y envían un mensaje a la sociedad: “[…] tienen un poder individual y colectivo que impactan en la vida de las personas y conforman la identidad del poder judicial como un actor imprescindible en la construcción de un Estado democrático de derecho” (Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación, 2013:7). La incorporación de la perspectiva de género viene a garantizar la igualdad de posiciones (Kessler, 2014) entre mujeres y varones como una meta, trascendiendo la mera igualdad de oportunidades que hasta el presente se ha demostrado insuficiente para que las mujeres consigamos una ciudadanía plena. Al momento de incorporar la perspectiva de género en las sentencias, quienes juzgan deben tener presente en primer lugar, el impacto diferenciado de las normas en base al sexo de las personas. En segundo lugar, la interpretación y aplicación de las leyes en relación con (y en base a) estereotipos de género. Si, por ejemplo, quienes imparten justicia no tienen presentes los estereotipos de género vigentes detrás de las violaciones a los derechos humanos de las mujeres, si no los detectan ni cuestionan, entonces los reproducen. Tal como sostiene Scott (1996) el género es una categoría imprescindible para el análisis social. En tercer lugar, al momento del juzgamiento, se deben tener en cuenta las exclusiones legitimadas por la ley por pensar el mundo en términos binarios y androcéntricos; en cuarto lugar, la distribución no equitativa de recursos y poder que opera entre varones y mujeres en el marco de una organización social patriarcal, y, por último, el trato diferenciado por género legitimado por las propias leyes.Eje 3: Tramas violentas y espacios de exclusión.Instituto de Cultura Jurídic

    Density dependent spin polarisation in ultra low-disorder quantum wires

    There is controversy as to whether a one-dimensional (1D) electron gas can spin polarise in the absence of a magnetic field. Together with a simple model, we present conductance measurements on ultra low-disorder quantum wires supportive of a spin polarisation at B=0. A spin energy gap is indicated by the presence of a feature in the range 0.5 - 0.7 X 2e^2/h in conductance data. Importantly, it appears that the spin gap is not static but a function of the electron density. Data obtained using a bias spectroscopy technique are consistent with the spin gap widening further as the Fermi-level is increased.Comment: 5 Pages 4 Figures email:[email protected]

    Opto-SICM framework combines optogenetics with scanning ion conductance microscopy for probing cell-to-cell contacts

    We present a novel framework, Opto-SICM, for studies of cellular interactions in live cells with high spatiotemporal resolution. The approach combines scanning ion conductance microscopy, SICM, and cell-type-specific optogenetic interrogation. Light-excitable cardiac fibroblasts (FB) and myofibroblasts (myoFB) were plated together with non-modified cardiomyocytes (CM) and then paced with periodic illumination. Opto-SICM reveals the extent of FB/myoFB-CM cell-cell contacts and the dynamic changes over time not visible by optical microscopy. FB-CM pairs have lower gap junctional expression of connexin-43 and higher contact dynamism compared to myoFB-CM pairs. The responsiveness of CM to pacing via FB/myoFB depends on the dynamics of the contact but not on the area. The non-responding pairs have higher net cell-cell movement at the contact. These findings are relevant to cardiac disease states, where adverse remodeling leads to abnormal electrical excitation of CM.     Motor vehicle accidents in patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator

    Objectives.This study was designed to examine driving safety in patients at risk for sudden death after implantation of a cardioverter-defibrillator.Background.Cardioverter-defibrillators are frequently implanted in patients at high risk for sudden death. Despite concern about the safety of driving in these patients, little is known about their actual motor vehicle accident rates.Methods.Surveys were sent to all 742 physicians in the United States involved in cardioverter-defibrillator implantation and follow-up. Physicians were questioned about numbers of patients followed up, numbers of fatal and nonfatal accidents, physician recommendations to patients about driving and knowledge of state driving laws.Results.Surveys were returned by 452 physicians (61%). A total of 30 motor vehicle accidents related to shocks from implantable defibrillators were reported by 25 physicians over a 12-year period from 1980 to 1992. Of these, nine were fatal accidents involving eight patients with a defibrillator and one passenger in a car driven by a patient. No bystanders were fatally injured. There were 21 nonfatal accidents involving 15 patients, 3 passengers and 3 bystanders. The estimated fatality rate for patients with a defibrillator, 7.5/100,000 patient-years, is significantly lower than that for the general population (18.4/100,000 patient-years, p < 0.05). The estimated injury rate, 17.6/100,000 patient-years, is also significantly lower than that for the general public (2,224/100,000 patient-years, p < 0.05). Only 10.5% (30 of 286) of all defibrillator discharges during driving resulted in accidents. Regarding physician recommendations, most physicians (58.1%) ask their patients to wait a mean (± SD) of 7.3 ± 3.4 months after implantation or a shock before driving again.Conclusions.The motor vehicle accident rate caused by discharge from an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator is low. Although restricting driving for a short period of time after implantation may be appropriate, excessive restrictions or a total ban on driving appears to be unwarranted

    Sow body condition at weaning and reproduction performance in organic piglet production

    The objective was to investigate the variation in backfat at weaning and its relations to reproduction results in organic sow herds in Denmark. The study included eight herds and 573 sows. The average backfat at weaning mean�13 mm; SD�4.2 mm) ranging from 10.5 to 17.3 mm among herds shows that it is possible to avoid poor body condition at weaning even with a lactation length of seven weeks or more. No main effect of backfat at weaning on reproduction performance was found, but the probability of a successful reproduction after weaning tended to decrease with decreasing backfat for first parity sows, whereas the opposite was the case for multiparous sows

    Global Health and Economic Impacts of Future Ozone Pollution

    Abstract and PDF report are also available on the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://globalchange.mit.edu/).We assess the human health and economic impacts of projected 2000-2050 changes in ozone pollution using the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis-Health Effects (EPPA-HE) model, in combination with results from the GEOS-Chem global tropospheric chemistry model that simulated climate and chemistry effects of IPCC SRES emissions. We use EPPA to assess the human health damages (including acute mortality and morbidity outcomes) caused by ozone pollution and quantify their economic impacts in sixteen world regions. We compare the costs of ozone pollution under scenarios with 2000 and 2050 ozone precursor and greenhouse gas emissions (SRES A1B scenario). We estimate that health costs due to global ozone pollution above pre-industrial levels by 2050 will be 580billion(year2000580 billion (year 2000) and that acute mortalities will exceed 2 million. We find that previous methodologies underestimate costs of air pollution by more than a third because they do not take into account the long-term, compounding effects of health costs.
