    Theoretical study of refraction effects on noise produced by turbulent jets

    The transmission of acoustic disturbances from the interior of a jet into the ambient air is studied. The jet is assumed infinitely long with mean velocity profile independent of streamwise location. The noise generator is a sequence of transient sources drifting with the local fluid and confined to a short length of the jet. In Part 1, supersonic jets are considered. Numerical results for mean-square pressure versus angle in the far-field show unexpected peaks which are very sharp. Analysis of simplified models indicates that these are complex quasi-resonant effects which appear to the stationary observer in a high frequency range. The peaks are real for the idealized model, but would be smoothed by mathematical integration over source position, velocity, and frequency. Subsonic jets were considered in part 2, and a preliminary study of the near-field was attempted. Mean-square radial displacements (or mean radial energy flow or space-time correlations of radial pressure gradient) are first found for very simple cases. The most difficult case studied is a sequence of transient sources at the center of a uniform-velocity circular cylindrical jet. Here a numerical triple integration is required and seems feasible although only preliminary results for mean square radial displacement are now available. These preliminary results show disturbances decreasing with increasing radial distance, and with increasing distance upstream and downstream from the source. A trend towards greater downstream disturbances appears even in the near field

    Design and implementation of a pilot orientation program for new NASA engineering employees

    This paper describes the design and field testing of an orientation program for new employees of NASA Lewis Research Center's Engineering Directorate. A group of new employees designed the program using a series of TQM analysis techniques. The program objectives were: provide consistent treatment for new employees; assist management and clerical staff with their responsibility for orientation; introduce the employee to as many facets of the organization as possible; allow the employee to feel like a member of the organization as early as possible; maximize the use of existing services; and use up-to-date information. The major aspects of the program included: training of management and clerical staff; lab tours and briefings describing the organization; shepherding, using senior employees as shepherds; a handbook of information about the center and the directorate; a package of information about northeast Ohio; and social activities involving the new employees and shepherds. The program was tested on a pilot group of six new employees over a four month period and was considered to be highly successful by both the employees and management. Aspects of the program have subsequently been adopted for center-wide use

    Langevin equations with multiplicative noise: resolution of time discretization ambiguities for equilibrium systems

    A Langevin equation with multiplicative noise is an equation schematically of the form dq/dt = -F(q) + e(q) xi, where e(q) xi is Gaussian white noise whose amplitude e(q) depends on q itself. Such equations are ambiguous, and depend on the details of one's convention for discretizing time when solving them. I show that these ambiguities are uniquely resolved if the system has a known equilibrium distribution exp[-V(q)/T] and if, at some more fundamental level, the physics of the system is reversible. I also discuss a simple example where this happens, which is the small frequency limit of Newton's equation d^2q/dt^2 + e^2(q) dq/dt = - grad V(q) + e^{-1}(q) xi with noise and a q-dependent damping term. The resolution does not correspond to simply interpreting naive continuum equations in a standard convention, such as Stratanovich or Ito.     Novel audio lures to improve interaction and encounter rates of possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) with control methods in New Zealand

    The brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), a marsupial native to Australia, was widely introduced in both the North and South Islands of New Zealand between 1890 and 1930 to support the fur industry that was booming in Australia at the time. Possums were one of the many mammalian species that humans introduced when they discovered and settled in New Zealand. Before the settlement of humans in New Zealand, there were no terrestrial mammals; therefore, the local species evolved in the absence of mammalian predators. This resulted in native species populations falling at alarming rates and possibly facing extinction due to numerous predators and species that had not been intended to coexist alongside one another. The government's initiative to reduce New Zealand's predators (possums, rats, and stoats) by 2050 has significantly expanded efforts to eliminate these pest mammals in recent years. Managing these pest mammal populations is crucial to protect the native bird, reptile, and invertebrate species. In New Zealand, predator control has been practiced for a long time, but what started with simple trapping has since developed into a thriving industry full of expertise to boost the efficiency of trapping and toxins, including species-specific attractants. The number of traps and bait stations needed to be set up and the associated labour and expense would be significantly reduced if animals could be reliably drawn from a distance to a bait station or trap. Any sound played to encourage or discourage interaction with a control tool/area is known as an audio lure. This research aims to identify if audio lures can significantly increase possum encounter and interaction rates of control devices and establish an audio lure tool that is durable, easy to use, and cost-effective for the wider public to use. Preliminary captive trials found that an aggressive possum sound is significantly more attractive to possums than an alarmed possum sound, a beeping sound, or a control (no sound). Preliminary field trials have found that the audio lure being developed performs similarly to an already established audio lure included as part of the Cacophony Project Thermal Camera. The price point of the audio lure being developed is around $250 (NZD) and should last 30 days in the field. At the conference, I will present the final captive trial results and more field trial research. The field trial research will investigate encounter and interaction rates of possums feeding in live-capture traps with and without audio lures. I will also, report the final audio lure costings and field life before servicing is required

    Equilibrium Distribution of Heavy Quarks in Fokker-Planck Dynamics

    We obtain within Fokker-Planck dynamics an explicit generalization of Einstein's relation between drag, diffusion and equilibrium distribution for a spatially homogeneous system, considering both the transverse and longitudinal diffusion for dimension n>1. We then provide a complete characterization of when the equilibrium distribution becomes a Boltzmann/J"uttner distribution, and when it satisfies the more general Tsallis distribution. We apply this analysis to recent calculations of drag and diffusion of a charm quark in a thermal plasma, and show that only a Tsallis distribution describes the equilibrium distribution well. We also provide a practical recipe applicable to highly relativistic plasmas, for determining both diffusion coefficients so that a specific equilibrium distribution will arise for a given drag coefficient.Comment: 4 pages including 2 figure

    Statistics of Partial Minima

    Motivated by multi-objective optimization, we study extrema of a set of N points independently distributed inside the d-dimensional hypercube. A point in this set is k-dominated by another point when at least k of its coordinates are larger, and is a k-minimum if it is not k-dominated by any other point. We obtain statistical properties of these partial minima using exact probabilistic methods and heuristic scaling techniques. The average number of partial minima, A, decays algebraically with the total number of points, A ~ N^{-(d-k)/k}, when 1<=k<d. Interestingly, there are k-1 distinct scaling laws characterizing the largest coordinates as the distribution P(y_j) of the jth largest coordinate, y_j, decays algebraically, P(y_j) ~ (y_j)^{-alpha_j-1}, with alpha_j=j(d-k)/(k-j) for 1<=j<=k-1. The average number of partial minima grows logarithmically, A ~ [1/(d-1)!](ln N)^{d-1}, when k=d.
