Resonance line-profile calculations based on hydrodynamical models of cataclysmic variable winds
We present synthetic line profiles as predicted by the models of 2-D line-
driven disk winds due to Proga, Stone & Drew. We compare the model line
profiles with HST observations of the cataclysmic variable IX Vel. The model
wind consists of a slow outflow that is bounded on the polar side by a fast
stream. We find that these two components of the wind produce distinct spectral
features. The fast stream produces profiles which show features consistent with
observations. These include the appearance of the P-Cygni shape for a range of
inclinations, the location of the maximum depth of the absorption component at
velocities less than the terminal velocity, and the transition from absorption
to emission with increasing inclination. However the model profiles have too
little absorption or emission equivalent width. This quantitative difference
between our models and observations is not a surprise because the line-driven
wind models predict a mass loss rate that is lower than the rate required by
the observations. We note that the model profiles exhibit a double-humped
structure near the line center which is not echoed in observations. We identify
this structure with a non-negligible redshifted absorption which is formed in
the slow component of the wind where the rotational velocity dominates over
expansion velocity. We conclude that the next generation of disk wind models,
developed for application to CVs, needs to yield stronger wind driving out to

How should we interpret the two transport relaxation times in the cuprates ?
We observe that the appearance of two transport relaxation times in the
various transport coefficients of cuprate metals may be understood in terms of
scattering processes that discriminate between currents that are even, or odd
under the charge conjugation operator. We develop a transport equation that
illustrates these ideas and discuss its experimental and theoretical

Disentangling the spatial substructure of Cygnus OB2 from Gaia DR2
© 2019 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical SocietyFor the first time, we have explored the spatial substructure of the Cygnus OB2 association using parallaxes from the recent second Gaia data release. We find significant line-of-sight substructure within the association, which we quantify using a parametrized model that reproduces the observed parallax distribution. This inference approach is necessary due to the non-linearity of the parallax distance transformation and the asymmetry of the resulting probability distribution. Using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo ensemble sampler and an unbinned maximum likelihood test, we identify two different stellar groups superposed on the association. We find the main Cygnus OB2 group at ∼1760 pc, further away than recent estimates have envisaged, and a foreground group at ∼1350 pc. We also calculate individual membership probabilities and identify outliers as possible non-members of the association.Peer reviewe
The Vietnam-Era Veteran Enters College
During the past few years, new kinds of students have been entering our colleges and universities. No longer can the uppermiddle class white male, who moves smoothly from a college preparatory program in high school directly into college, be regarded as the typical student. Among the various groups of nontraditional students that make for greater heterogeneity within the college population are those from racial or ethnic minorities, those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, those whose academic ability or high school preparation is relatively poor (as judged by conventional criteria) and those who are older than the average undergraduate. One subgroup of this last category consists of those whose college education was delayed or interrupted by military service during the Vietnam era, whether they actually served in Southeast Asia or not. It is generally recognized that such students may benefit from college at least as much as the typical student
New Species, Subgenus and Records of Bactrocera Macquart from the South Pacific (Diptera: Tephritidae: Dacinae)
ABSTRACT Bactrocera (Bulladacus) subgen.nov. is described to include nine species of Asian and Pacific Dacinae. B. (Afrodacus) grandistylus sp.nov., B. (Bulladacus) gnetum sp.nov. and B. (Notodacus) paraxanthodes sp.nov. are described and illustrated, the latter being closely related to B. xanthodes (Broun), an economic species with which it has been confused. B. (Bactrocera) passiflorae (Froggatt) and B. (Bulladacus) aenigmatica (Malloch) are revised and a new colour form of the former illustrated, while the male of the latter is described and illustrated for the first time
Massive stars in the hinterland of the young cluster, Westerlund 2
Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 July 2018. 16 pages, plus one-page table in an appendix.An unsettled question concerning the formation and distribution of massive stars is whether they must be born in massive clusters and, if found in less dense environments, whether they must have migrated there. With the advent of wide-area digital photometric surveys, it is now possible to identify massive stars away from prominent Galactic clusters without bias. In this study we consider 40 candidate OB stars found in the field around the young massive cluster, Westerlund 2, by Mohr-Smith et al.: these are located inside a box of 1.5 × 1.5 deg 2 and are selected on the basis of their extinctions and K magnitudes.We present VLT/X-shooter spectra of two of the hottest O stars, respectively 11 and 22 arcmin from the centre of Westerlund 2. They are confirmed as O4V stars, with stellar masses likely to be in excess of 40 M ·. Their radial velocities relative to the non-binary reference object, MSP 182, in Westerlund 2 are -29.4 ± 1.7 and -14.4 ± 2.2 km s -1, respectively. Using Gaia DR2 proper motions we find that between 8 and 11 early O/WR stars in the studied region (including the two VLT targets, plus WR 20c and WR 20aa) could have been ejected fromWesterlund 2 in the last one million years. This represents an efficiency of massive-star ejection of up to ~ 25 per cent. On sky, the positions of these stars and their proper motions show a near N-S alignment. We discuss the possibility that these results are a consequence of prior sub-cluster merging combining with dynamical ejection.Peer reviewe
Apparatus for Three-Axis IMU Calibration with a Single-Axis Rate Table
Various methods and apparatuses are provided for calibrating a three-axis IMU sensor package using a single-axis rate table. In one embodiment, a method includes adjusting an x-axis position of a sensor by rotating an inner assembly along the circumference of the inner surface of the circular frame, adjusting a y-axis position of the sensor by rotating a portion of the inner assembly, spinning the single-axis rate table to generate z-axis rotation of the apparatus which results in simultaneous stimulation of all three axes of the sensor assembly, and obtaining measurements from the sensor corresponding to the x-axis position, the y-axis position, and the z-axis rotation of the apparatus
An equatorial wind from the massive young stellar object S140 IRS 1
The discovery of the second equatorial ionized stellar wind from a massive
young stellar object is reported. High resolution radio continuum maps of S140
IRS 1 reveal a highly elongated source that is perpendicular to the larger
scale bipolar molecular outflow. This picture is confirmed by location of a
small scale monopolar near-IR reflection nebula at the base of the blueshifted
lobe. A second epoch of observations over a five year baseline show little
ordered outward proper motion of clumps as would have been expected for a jet.
A third epoch, taken only 50 days after the second, did show significant
changes in the radio morphology. These radio properties can all be understood
in the context of an equatorial wind driven by radiation pressure from the
central star and inner disc acting on the gas in the surface layers of the disc
as proposed by Drew et al. (1998). This equatorial wind system is briefly
compared with the one in S106IR, and contrasted with other massive young

Do Outcomes of Arthroscopic Subscapularis Tendon Repairs Depend on Rotator Cuff Fatty Infiltration?
Background:Rotator cuff fatty infiltration has been correlated with poorer radiographic and clinical outcomes in supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendon repairs, but this has not been well-studied in subscapularis tendon repairs. Purpose:To evaluate the influence of preoperative rotator cuff fatty infiltration on postoperative outcomes for patients undergoing arthroscopic subscapularis tendon repair. Study Design:Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods:Patients who underwent arthroscopic subscapularis repair between 2010 and 2016 were retrospectively identified, and demographic data and surgical findings were recorded. The extent of fatty infiltration was determined on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging by the Fuchs modification of the Goutallier classification. At the most recent follow-up, patients completed the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System for Upper Extremity (PROMIS-UE) computer adaptive test and a postoperative visual analog scale for pain. The distribution of fatty infiltration was compared between patients undergoing subscapularis tendon repair versus subscapularis tendon repair combined with a posterior cuff repair. Outcomes were compared for patients using Goutallier grade 0-1 versus grade ≥2 changes in each rotator cuff muscle. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the influence of muscle quality, as well as demographic factors, on PROMIS-UE scores. Significance was defined as P < .05. Results:There were 140 shoulders included (mean age, 61.8 years; 42.1% female; mean follow-up, 51.7 months). The prevalence of Goutallier grade 2 changes or higher was significantly greater in patients with multitendon repair relative to isolated subscapularis tendon repair. For the overall group of all patients undergoing subscapularis tendon repair, whether in isolation or as part of a multitendon repair, PROMIS-UE scores were significantly lower for patients with infraspinatus muscle grade 2 or higher Goutallier changes relative to grade 0 or 1. After adjustment for age, body mass index, patient sex, and fatty infiltration in other rotator cuff muscles, poor infraspinatus muscle quality remained the only significant predictor for lower PROMIS-UE scores. Conclusion:Patients undergoing arthroscopic subscapularis tendon repair with poor infraspinatus muscle quality had worse patient-reported outcomes. This was true whether subscapularis tendon repair was isolated or was performed in conjunction with supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendon repairs
