    Migrating medical communications software to a multi-tenant cloud environment

    The rise of cloud computing has paved the way for many new applications. Many of these new cloud applications are also multi-tenant, ensuring multiple end users can make use of the same application instance. While these technologies make it possible to create many new applications, many legacy applications can also benefit from the added flexibility and cost-savings of cloud computing and multi-tenancy. In this paper, we describe the steps required to migrate a. NET-based medical communications application to the Windows Azure public cloud environment, and the steps required to add multi-tenancy to the application. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of our migration approach. We found that the migration to the cloud itself requires only a limited amount of changes to the application, but that this also limited the benefits, as individual instances would only be partially used. Adding multi-tenancy requires more changes, but when this is done, it has the potential to greatly reduce the cost of running the application

    Asteroseismology of HADS stars: V974 Oph, a radial pulsator flavoured by nonradial components

    The analysis of a dense time-series on V974 Oph disclosed the rich pulsational content (at least five independent terms) of this high-amplitude (0.60 mag in B-light) Delta Sct star. A mode with a frequency very close to the main one (probably the fundamental radial mode) has been detected: such a doublet is not a common feature in stars of the same class. Also another term can be considered a radial one, but the high ratio (0.786) raises some problems that can be solved only by admitting very low metallicity. It is quite evident that some undetectable terms are again hidden in the noise, as the least--squares fit leaves a rms residual much higher than the observational noise. All that considered, nonradial modes seem to play a key role in the light variability of V974 Oph. Revealing an unsuspected asteroseismic interest, V974 Oph provides a link between low- and high-amplitude Delta Sct stars. By discussing other high-amplitude Delta Sct stars showing unusual period ratios, it is evident that the asteroseismic approach is possible also for this class of pulsators.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     Shape oscillations in non-degenerate Bose gases - transition from the collisionless to the hydrodynamic regime

    We investigate collective oscillations of non-degenerate clouds of Rb-87 atoms as a function of density in an elongated magnetic trap. For the low-lying M=0 monopole-quadrupole shape oscillation we measure the oscillation frequencies and damping rates. At the highest densities the mean-free-path is smaller than the axial dimension of the sample, which corresponds to collisionally hydrodynamic conditions. This allows us to cover the cross-over from the collisionless to the hydrodynamic regime. The experimental results show good agreement with theory. We also analyze the influence of trap anharmonicities on the oscillations in relation to observed temperature dependencies of the dipole and quadrupole oscillation frequencies.     Adiabatically changing the phase-space density of a trapped Bose gas

    We show that the degeneracy parameter of a trapped Bose gas can be changed adiabatically in a reversible way, both in the Boltzmann regime and in the degenerate Bose regime. We have performed measurements on spin-polarized atomic hydrogen in the Boltzmann regime demonstrating reversible changes of the degeneracy parameter (phase-space density) by more than a factor of two. This result is in perfect agreement with theory. By extending our theoretical analysis to the quantum degenerate regime we predict that, starting close enough to the Bose-Einstein phase transition, one can cross the transition by an adiabatic change of the trap shape.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Latex, submitted to PR

    Lithospheric Structure and Evolution of Southern Africa: Constraints from Joint Inversion of Rayleigh Wave Dispersion and Receiver Functions

    We conduct a joint inversion of teleseismic receiver functions and Rayleigh wave phase velocity dispersion from both ambient noise and earthquakes using data from 79 seismic stations in southern Africa, which is home to some of the world\u27s oldest cratons and orogenic belts. The area has experienced two of the largest igneous activities in the world (the Okavango dyke swarm and Bushveld mafic intrusion) and thus is an ideal locale for investigating continental formation and evolution. The resulting 3-D shear wave velocities for the depth range of 0—100Â km and crustal thickness measurements show a clear spatial correspondence with known geological features observed on the surface. Higher than normal mantle velocities found beneath the southern part of the Kaapvaal craton are consistent with the basalt removal model for the formation of cratonic lithosphere. In contrast, the Bushveld complex situated within the northern part of the craton is characterized by a thicker crust and higher crustal Vp/Vs but lower mantle velocities, which are indicative of crustal underplating of mafic materials and lithospheric refertilization by the world\u27s largest layered mafic igneous intrusion. The thickened crust and relatively low elevation observed in the Limpopo belt, which is a late Archean collisional zone between the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons, can be explained by eclogitization of the basaltic lower crust. The study also finds evidence for the presence of a stalled segment of oceanic lithosphere beneath the southern margin of the Proterozoic Namaqua-Natal mobile belt

    Influence of nearly resonant light on the scattering length in low-temperature atomic gases

    We develop the idea of manipulating the scattering length aa in low-temperature atomic gases by using nearly resonant light. As found, if the incident light is close to resonance with one of the bound pp levels of electronically excited molecule, then virtual radiative transitions of a pair of interacting atoms to this level can significantly change the value and even reverse the sign of aa. The decay of the gas due to photon recoil, resulting from the scattering of light by single atoms, and due to photoassociation can be minimized by selecting the frequency detuning and the Rabi frequency. Our calculations show the feasibility of optical manipulations of trapped Bose condensates through a light-induced change in the mean field interaction between atoms, which is illustrated for 7^7Li.Comment: 12 pages, 1 Postscript figur
