    Single crystals of AgGaS2 and AgGaTe2 were grown, using the Bridgman technique and the traveling heater method (THM). Melt growth experiments in shaped ampoules were prepared for growth experiments using spontaneous nucleation or seed crystals. The acquired crystals were about 40 mm long and up to 220 mm"2 in cross-section. The lateral crystal faces correspond with the given ampoule design, therefore the output of crystals for optical applications could be raised. The calculated axial and radial temperature profile of the THM ampoules confirmed the design, developed for the EURECA mission. Solution growth experiments were carried out under terrestrial and m-gravity conditions (EURECA I). These crystals were characterized by X-ray and polarization methods, raster electron microscopy, reflection and transmission measurements and photoluminescence.
