    A thermodynamically consistent derivation of a frictional-damage cohesive-zone model with different mode i and mode II fracture energies

    The present paper deals with the derivation of an interface model characterized by macroscopic fracture energies which are different in modes I and II, the macroscopic fracture energy being the total energy dissipated per unit of fracture area. It is first shown that thermo-dynamical consistency for a model governed by a single damage variable, combined with the choice of employing an equivalent relative displacement and of a linear softening in the stress-relative displacement law, leads to the coincidence of fracture energies in modes I and II. To retrieve the experimental evidence of a greater fracture energy in mode II, a micro-structured geometry is considered at the typical point of the interface where a Representative Interface Element (RIE) characterized by a periodic arrangement of distinct inclined planes is introduced. The interaction within each of these surfaces is governed by a coupled damage-friction law. A sensitivity analysis of the correlation between micromechanical parameters and the numerically computed single-point microstructural response in mode II is reported. An assessment of the capability of the model in predicting different mixed mode fracture energies is carried out both at the single microstructural interface point level and with a structural example. For the latter a double cantilever beam with uneven bending moments has been analyzed and numerical results are compared with experimental data reported in the literature for different values of mode mixity. © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS.     Bond-slip analysis via a cohesive-zone model simulating damage, friction and interlocking

    A recently proposed cohesive-zone model which effectively combines damage, friction and mechanical interlocking has been revisited and further validated by numerically simulating the pull-out test, from a concrete block, of a ribbed steel bar in the post-yield deformation range. The simulated response is in good agreement with experimental measurements of the bond slip characteristics in the post-yield range of deformed bars reported in the literature. This study highlights the main features of the model: with physically justified and relatively simple arguments, and within the sound framework of thermodynamics with internal variables, the model effectively separates the three main sources of energy dissipation, i.e. loss of adhesion, friction along flat interfaces and mechanical interlocking. This study provides further evidence that the proposed approach allows easier and physically clearer procedures for the determination of the model parameters of such three elementary mechanical behaviours, and makes possible their interpretation and measurement as separate material property, as a viable alternative to lumping these parameters into single values of the fracture energy. In particular, the proposed approach allows to consider a single value of the adhesion energy for modes I and II

    The double population of Chamaeleon I detected by Gaia DR2

    Context. Chamaeleon I represents an ideal laboratory to study the cluster formation in a low-mass environment. Recently, two sub clusters spatially located in the northern and southern parts of Chamaeleon I were found with different ages and radial velocities. Aims. In this letter we report new insights into the structural properties, age, and distance of Chamaeleon I based on the astrometric parameters from Gaia data-release 2 (DR2). Methods. We identified 140 sources with a reliable counterpart in the Gaia DR2 archive. We determined the median distance of the cluster using Gaia parallaxes and fitted the distribution of parallaxes and proper motions assuming the presence of two clusters. We derived the probability of each single source of belonging to the northern or southern sub-clusters, and compared the HR diagram of the most probable members to pre-main sequences isochrones. Results. The median distance of Chamaeleon I is ~190 pc. This is about 20 pc larger than the value commonly adopted in the literature. From a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of the parallaxes and proper-motion distributions we conclude that the northern and southern clusters do not belong to the same parent population. The northern population has a distance dN = 192.7+/-0.4 pc, while the southern one dS = 186.5+/-0.7 pc. The two sub-clusters appear coeval, at variance with literature results, and most of the sources are younger than 3 Myr. The northern cluster is more elongated and extends towards the southern direction partially overlapping with the more compact cluster located in the south.     BackgroundInsecticide treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) have been scaled up for malaria prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there are few studies on the benefit of implementing IRS in areas with moderate to high coverage of ITNs. We evaluated the impact of an IRS program on malaria related outcomes in western Kenya, an area of intense perennial malaria transmission and moderate ITN coverage (55\ue2\u20ac\u201c65% use of any net the previous night).MethodsThe Kenya Division of Malaria Control, with support from the US President\ue2\u20ac\u2122s Malaria Initiative, conducted IRS in one lowland endemic district with moderate coverage of ITNs. Surveys were conducted in the IRS district and a neighboring district before IRS, after one round of IRS in July-Sept 2008 and after a second round of IRS in April-May 2009. IRS was conducted with pyrethroid insecticides. At each survey, 30 clusters were selected for sampling and within each cluster, 12 compounds were randomly selected. The primary outcomes measured in all residents of selected compounds included malaria parasitemia, clinical malaria (P. falciparum infection plus history of fever) and anemia (Hb<8) of all residents in randomly selected compounds. At each survey round, individuals from the IRS district were matched to those from the non-IRS district using propensity scores and multivariate logistic regression models were constructed based on the matched dataset.ResultsAt baseline and after one round of IRS, there were no differences between the two districts in the prevalence of malaria parasitemia, clinical malaria or anemia. After two rounds of IRS, the prevalence of malaria parasitemia was 6.4% in the IRS district compared to 16.7% in the comparison district (OR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.22\ue2\u20ac\u201c0.59, p<0.001). The prevalence of clinical malaria was also lower in the IRS district (1.8% vs. 4.9%, OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.20\ue2\u20ac\u201c0.68, p = 0.001). The prevalence of anemia was lower in the IRS district but only in children under 5 years of age (2.8% vs. 9.3%, OR = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.13\ue2\u20ac\u201c0.71, p = 0.006). Multivariate models incorporating both IRS and ITNs indicated that both had an impact on malaria parasitemia and clinical malaria but the independent effect of ITNs was reduced in the district that had received two rounds of IRS. There was no statistically significant independent effect of ITNs on the prevalence of anemia in any age group.ConclusionsBoth IRS and ITNs are effective tools for reducing malaria burden and when implemented in an area of moderate to high transmission with moderate ITN coverage, there may be an added benefit of IRS. The value of adding ITNs to IRS is less clear as their benefits may be masked by IRS. Additional monitoring of malaria control programs that implement ITNs and IRS concurrently is encouraged to better understand how to maximize the benefits of both interventions, particularly in the context of increasing pyrethroid resistance.26731524PMC470119

    The use of aerial- and close-range photogrammetry for the mapping of the Lavini di Marco tracksite (Hettangian, Southern Alps, NE Italy)

    (EXCERPT FROM ABSTRACT) Close-range photogrammetry was executed following the procedure proposed by Mallison &amp; Wings (2014). More than seventy 3D models were obtained and interpreted by means of color-coded and contour line images, which allow to improve the ichno- logical knowledge of the tracksite. The 3D models of the best-preserved tracks were used for the osteological reconstruction of the trackmakers’ autopodia, supposing the arthral position of the phalangeal pads. Three indirect methods were used to correlate tracks and their trackmakers: (i) synapomorphy-based approach; (ii) phenetic correlation; (iii) coincidence correlation (see Carrano &amp; Wilson, 2001) The final map was produced with different level of knowledge due to the distribution of tracks and current state of site preservation. Furthermore, it represents a complete documentation that will be used for future work of enhancement, preservation and valorization of the tracksite. The ichnotaxonomical review of the quadrupedal trackways led us to emend the diagnosis of Lavinipes cheminii Avanzini et al. (2003) and to assign several other sparse tracks and trackways to L. chemini. The skeletal reconstruction of fore and hind limbs points towards Gongxianosaurus sp. as the most suitable trackmaker of L. cheminii. The herein supposed Laurasian affinity of the Lavini di Marco dinosaur assemblage clashes with the previous hypotheses that always link the Southern Alps sector with the Gondwana mainland

    An approach for the modeling of interface-body coupled nonlocal damage

    Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) can be used for strengthening concrete or masonry constructions.One of the main problem in the use of FRP is the possible detachment of the reinforcement from the supportmaterial. This paper deals with the modeling of the FRP-concrete or masonry damage interface, accounting forthe coupling occurring between the degradation of the cohesive material and the FRP detachment. To this end,a damage model is considered for the quasi-brittle material. In order to prevent strain localization and strongmesh sensitivity of the solution, an integral-type of nonlocal model based on the weighted spatial averaging of astrain-like quantity is developed. Regarding the interface, the damage is governed by the relative displacementoccurring at bond. A suitable interface model which accounts for the mode I, mode II and mixed mode ofdamage is developed. The coupling between the body damage and the interface damage is performedcomputing the body damage on the bond surface. Numerical examples are presented

    The rapid decline in endogenous estrogen production that occurs during menopause is associated with significant bone loss and increased risk for fragility fracture. While hormone therapy (HT) is an effective means to re-establish endogenous estrogen levels and reduce the risk of future fracture, its use can be accompanied by undesirable side effects such as stroke and breast cancer. In this paper, we revisit the issue of whether HT can be both safe and effective for the prevention of postmenopausal bone loss by examining standard and alternative doses and formulations of HT. The aim of this paper is to continue the dialogue regarding the benefits and controversies of HT with the goal of encouraging the dissemination of-up-to date evidence that may influence how HT is viewed and prescribed
