Why Does it Matter that Beliefs and Valuations be Correctly Represented?
This paper contains an analysis of a simple principal-agent problem illustrating possible problems that may arise when the prinicpal ascribes to the agent subjective probabilities and utilities that are implied by the subjective expected utility model but do not represent the agent's beliefs and valuations. Using ACIS on the Chandra X-ray Observatory as a particle radiation monitor
The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) is one of two focal-plane
instruments on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. During initial radiation-belt
passes, the exposed ACIS suffered significant radiation damage from trapped
soft protons scattering off the x-ray telescope's mirrors. The primary effect
of this damage was to increase the charge-transfer inefficiency (CTI) of the
ACIS 8 front-illuminated CCDs. Subsequently, the Chandra team implemented
procedures to remove the ACIS from the telescope's focus during high-radiation
events: planned protection during radiation-belt transits; autonomous
protection triggered by an on-board radiation monitor; and manual intervention
based upon assessment of space-weather conditions. However, as Chandra's
multilayer insulation ages, elevated temperatures have reduced the
effectiveness of the on-board radiation monitor for autonomous protection. Here
we investigate using the ACIS CCDs themselves as a radiation monitor. We
explore the 10-year database to evaluate the CCDs' response to particle
radiation and to compare this response with other radiation data and

Using ACIS on the Chandra X-ray Observatory as a particle radiation monitor II
The Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer is an instrument on the Chandra X-ray
Observatory. CCDs are vulnerable to radiation damage, particularly by soft
protons in the radiation belts and solar storms. The Chandra team has
implemented procedures to protect ACIS during high-radiation events including
autonomous protection triggered by an on-board radiation monitor. Elevated
temperatures have reduced the effectiveness of the on-board monitor. The ACIS
team has developed an algorithm which uses data from the CCDs themselves to
detect periods of high radiation and a flight software patch to apply this
algorithm is currently active on-board the instrument. In this paper, we
explore the ACIS response to particle radiation through comparisons to a number
of external measures of the radiation environment. We hope to better understand
the efficiency of the algorithm as a function of the flux and spectrum of the

Love is . . . an abstract word: the influence of phonological and semantic factors on verbal short-term memory in Williams syndrome
It has been claimed that verbal short-term memory in Williams syndrome is characterised by an over-use of phonological coding alongside a reduced contribution of lexical semantics. We critically examine this hypothesis and present results from a memory span task comparing performance on concrete and abstract words, together with a replication of a span task using phonologically similar and phonologically dissimilar words. Fourteen participants with Williams syndrome were individually matched to two groups of typically developing children. The first control group was matched on digit span and the second on vocabulary level. Significant effects were found for both the semantic and the phonological variables in the WS group as well as in the control groups, with no interaction between experimental variable and group in either experiment. The results demonstrate that, despite claims to the contrary, children and adults with WS are able to access and make use of lexical semantics in a verbal short-term memory task in a manner comparable to typically developing individuals
The Efficacy of Peripheral Opioid Antagonists in Opioid-Induced Constipation and Postoperative Ileus: A Systematic Review of the Literature.
Opioid-induced constipation has a negative impact on quality of life for patients with chronic pain and can affect more than a third of patients. A related but separate entity is postoperative ileus, which is an abnormal pattern of gastrointestinal motility after surgery. Nonselective Ό-opioid receptor antagonists reverse constipation and opioid-induced ileus but cross the blood-brain barrier and may reverse analgesia. Peripherally acting Ό-opioid receptor antagonists target the Ό-opioid receptor without reversing analgesia. Three such agents are US Food and Drug Administration approved. We reviewed the literature for randomized controlled trials that studied the efficacy of alvimopan, methylnaltrexone, and naloxegol in treating either opioid-induced constipation or postoperative ileus. Peripherally acting Ό-opioid receptor antagonists may be effective in treating both opioid-induced bowel dysfunction and postoperative ileus, but definitive conclusions are not possible because of study inconsistency and the relatively low quality of evidence. Comparisons of agents are difficult because of heterogeneous end points and no head-to-head studies
