    Mesoscopic Charge Relaxation

    We consider charge relaxation in the mesoscopic equivalent of an RC circuit. For a single-channel, spin-polarized contact, self-consistent scattering theory predicts a universal charge relaxation resistance equal to half a resistance quantum independent of the transmission properties of the contact. This prediction is in good agreement with recent experimental results. We use a tunneling Hamiltonian formalism and show in Hartree-Fock approximation, that at zero temperature the charge relaxation resistance is universal even in the presence of Coulomb blockade effects. We explore departures from universality as a function of temperature and magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Durante la década pasada hemos presenciado una proliferación de crisis cambiarias, tanto en Asia como en Europa y Latinoamérica, acompañada de abundante literatura acerca del tema. Es aceptado que, cuando las políticas monetaria y fiscal no son congruentes entre sí, habrá una crisis de balanza de pagos. La literatura reciente ha avanzado en varias direcciones para explicar los mecanismos de propagación de una crisis, que aplican aún cuando la política del gobierno es sostenible. No obstante, este tipo de modelos explica escasamente la iniciación de un ataque. El objetivo de este artículo es dar una explicación tentativa a esa iniciación. Se presenta un modelo donde la obtención de información es crucial para el inversionista y ésta se deteriora con el tiempo; en este marco, el ataque especulativo es un comportamiento óptimo para un inversionista que tenga la capacidad de llevarlo a cabo. Del modelo puede concluirse, entre otras cosas, que existe una relación inversa entre la frecuencia y la profundidad de los ataques. Además, el tamaño del agente relativo a la economía y la fuerza del efecto manada afectan de manera importante los costos del ataque y, de esta forma, afectan también la vulnerabilidad de cada economía a sufrir ataques especulativos.

    Phosphorus retention capacity in red ferralitic soil

    In this study the main physical-chemical characteristics of red ferralitic soil to use as substrate in subsurface wetlands was determined. The P-removal was evaluated in a short-term isotherm batch experiment and in a column percolation experiment. The acid characteristic and high content of iron minerals in the red ferralitic soil facilitated the phosphorus removal. Also the sorption isotherms at two different temperatures were obtained. The results showed that the sorption capacity increases with an increase in solution temperature from 25 to 35 degrees C. The experimental data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models, having a better fit to the Freundlich isotherms. The maximum P-sorption capacities estimated using the Langmuir isotherm were 0.96 and 1.13 g/kg at 25 and 35 degrees C respectively. Moreover a column experiment was carried out at two different flows. Sequential extractions of the phosphorus-saturated soil indicated that phosphorus is mainly bound with iron or aluminum minerals. The results have demonstrated a good potential for red ferralitic soil for phosphorus removal from urban wastewater

    Ect2/Pbl Acts via Rho and Polarity Proteins to Direct the Assembly of an Isotropic Actomyosin Cortex upon Mitotic Entry.

    Entry into mitosis is accompanied by profound changes in cortical actomyosin organization. Here, we delineate a pathway downstream of the RhoGEF Pbl/Ect2 that directs this process in a model epithelium. Our data suggest that the release of Pbl/Ect2 from the nucleus at mitotic entry drives Rho-dependent activation of Myosin-II and, in parallel, induces a switch from Arp2/3 to Diaphanous-mediated cortical actin nucleation that depends on Cdc42, aPKC, and Par6. At the same time, the mitotic relocalization of these apical protein complexes to more lateral cell surfaces enables Cdc42/aPKC/Par6 to take on a mitosis-specific function-aiding the assembly of a relatively isotropic metaphase cortex. Together, these data reveal how the repolarization and remodeling of the actomyosin cortex are coordinated upon entry into mitosis to provide cells with the isotropic and rigid form they need to undergo faithful chromosome segregation and division in a crowded tissue environment

    Planning of the Agrifood supply chain: a case study for the FVG region

    The aim of this paper is to discuss the planning of regional Agri-food supply chain using an integrated database territorial information. The objective is to optimize the chain performance using alternative solutions. Evidences are obtained with a case study performed in FVG region applied to maize-crop. Firstly it is explored the chain network composed by farms, collection points and processing plants; then territorial, agronomic and climate information are integrated to simulate realistic production forecast model applied to maize crop. Finally a program from graph analysis is used to allocate the production through the chain. The economic performance is evaluated using the net revenues varying with the intensification of maize production and adoption of different organization solutions (independent and cooperative).
