    Modelo de la dinámica poblacional de Anoda cristata en un cultivo de soja resistente a glifosato bajo diferentes sistemas de manejo

    Se desarrolló un modelo de simulación de la dinámica del banco de semillas de Anoda cristata (L.) Schlecht en un cultivo de soja. El modelo considera distintas estrategias de manejo: ausencia de control, control con la dosis recomendada y con la mitad de dicha dosis y dos espaciamientos entre filas del cultivo de soja (35 y 70 cm). El modelo fue evaluado usando datos de experiencias previas realizadas durante 4 años consecutivos. El modelo reprodujo ajustadamente la dinámica del banco de semillas. El banco de semillas decreció más cuando no se produjeron semillas; en ausencia de control, alcanzó una densidad de equilibrio. Cuando se produjeron semillas todos los años, el modelo fue más sensible a cambios en la tasa de predación pero cuando no se produjeron semillas, la mortalidad de éstas fue el proceso más importante. La simulación muestra que puede ocurrir erradicación a largo plazo con el uso continuo de glifosato a la dosis recomendada, o con la combinación de soja sembrada a 35 cm entre filas y la mitad de la dosis recomendada.A computer simulation model was developed to describe Anoda cristata (L.) Schlecht seedbank dynamics in soybeans. The model considers different weed management strategies: absence of control, control with the recommended rate and with glyphosate at half the recommended rate, and two soybean row spacings (35 and 70 cm). The model was evaluated using data from previous experiments obtained for four consecutive years. The model accurately reproduced the seedbank dynamics. The seedbank decreased more in weed management strategies without seed production. In absence of control, the seedbank reached an equilibrium density. When seeds were produced every year, the model output was more sensitive to changes in the rate of predation; but without seed production, seed mortality was the most important process. Simulation demonstrated that long-term eradication may occur with continuous use of glyphosate at the recommended rate or with the combination of soybean at 35 cm between rows and glyphosate at half the recommended rate.Fil: Puricelli, E..     Applied mechanics of the Puricelli osteotomy: a linear elastic analysis with the finite element method

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Surgical orthopedic treatment of the mandible depends on the development of techniques resulting in adequate healing processes. In a new technical and conceptual alternative recently introduced by Puricelli, osteotomy is performed in a more distal region, next to the mental foramen. The method results in an increased area of bone contact, resulting in larger sliding rates among bone segments. This work aimed to investigate the mechanical stability of the Puricelli osteotomy design.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Laboratory tests complied with an Applied Mechanics protocol, in which results from the Control group (without osteotomy) were compared with those from Test I (Obwegeser-Dal Pont osteotomy) and Test II (Puricelli osteotomy) groups. Mandible edentulous prototypes were scanned using computerized tomography, and digitalized images were used to build voxel-based finite element models. A new code was developed for solving the voxel-based finite elements equations, using a reconditioned conjugate gradients iterative solver. The Magnitude of Displacement and von Mises equivalent stress fields were compared among the three groups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In Test Group I, maximum stress was seen in the region of the rigid internal fixation plate, with value greater than those of Test II and Control groups. In Test Group II, maximum stress was in the same region as in Control group, but was lower. The results of this comparative study using the Finite Element Analysis suggest that Puricelli osteotomy presents better mechanical stability than the original Obwegeser-Dal Pont technique. The increased area of the proximal segment and consequent decrease of the size of lever arm applied to the mandible in the modified technique yielded lower stress values, and consequently greater stability of the bone segments.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This work showed that Puricelli osteotomy of the mandible results in greater mechanical stability when compared to the original technique introduced by Obwegeser-Dal Pont. The increased area of the proximal segment and consequent decrease of the size of lever arm applied to the mandible in the modified technique yield lower stress values and displacements, and consequently greater stability of the bone segments.</p

    Apicotomy: a root apical fracture for surgical treatment of impacted upper canines

    Characterization of bone repair in rat femur after treatment with calcium phosphate cement and autogenous bone graft

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In this study, the biocompatibility, stability and osteotransductivity of a new cement based on alpha-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-TCP) were investigated in a bone repair model using a rat model.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The potential of alpha-TCP on bone repair was compared to autogenous bone grafting, and unfilled cavities were used as negative control. Surgical cavities were prepared and designated as test (T), implanted with alpha-TCP blocks; negative control (C - ), unfilled; and positive control (C + ), implanted with autogenous bone graft. Results were analyzed on postoperative days three, seven, 14, 21 and 60.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The histological analyses showed the following results. Postoperative day three: presence of inflammatory infiltrate, erythrocytes and proliferating fibroblasts in T, C - and C + samples. Day seven: extensive bone neoformation in groups T and C + , and beginning of alpha-TCP resorption by phagocytic cells. Days 14 and 21: osteoblastic activity in the three types of cavities. Day 60: In all samples, neoformed bone similar to surrounding bone. Moderate interruption on the ostectomized cortical bone.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Bone neoformation is seen seven days after implantation of alpha-TCP and autogenous bone. Comparison of C - with T and C + samples showed that repair is faster in implanted cavities; on day 60, control groups presented almost complete bone repair. Alpha-TCP cement presents biocompatibility and osteotransductivity, besides stability, but 60 days after surgery the cavities were not closed.</p

    A new technique for mandibular osteotomy

    Sagittal split osteotomy (SSO) is a surgical technique largely employed for mandibular mobilizations in orthognatic procedures. However, the traditional design of buccal osteotomy, located at the junction of mandibular ramus and body, may prevent more extensive sliding between the bone segments, particularly on the advance, laterality and verticality of the mandibular body. The author proposes a new technical and conceptual solution, in which osteotomy is performed in a more distal region, next to the mental formamen. Technically, the area of contact between medullary-cancellous bone surfaces is increased, resulting in larger sliding rates among bone segments; it also facilitates the use of rigid fixation systems, with miniplates and monocortical screws. Conceptually, it interferes with the resistance arm of the mandible, seen as an interpotent lever of the third gender

    Available zinc levels in soils of Argentina

    Adequate grain zinc (Zn) concentration is important because of its influence on human health. The Argentina Pampas region (APR) provides between 86% and 90% of total grain exports by the country. Soils of the Argentina Pampas region had high fertility under pristine condition but intensification of agriculture, increasing grain yields, and poor or no Zn fertilization could reduce soil available Zn. The objectives of this work were to determine the distribution of available Zn in agricultural and pristine soils of the Argentina Pampas region and its relationship with some chemical characteristics. Soil samples (0-20 cm depth) were collected and georeferenced (approximately 550 for each condition), and soil organic matter, pH, extractable phosphorus, cation exchange capacity, and available Zn by extraction with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA-Zn) were measured. For geostatistical analysis, indicator kriging (non-parametric method) was utilized as interpolation method. Agriculture decreased soil organic matter, pH, extractable phosphorus and DTPA-Zn (26.9, 4.6, 57.8 and 69.5%, respectively). Relative decrease of DTPA-Zn was only significantly associated with the relative decrease of soil organic matter, although this association was low (r=0.41). Regionally, the DTPA-Zn distribution was very heterogeneous and soil organic matter, pH, extractable phosphorus and cation exchange capacity did not adequately predicted soil DTPA-Zn concentrations (r2=0.16 to 0.26). Agricultural soils of northern, northwestern and southwestern APR (approximately 12,150,000 ha) showed DTPA-Zn values below 1 mg kg-1 , and therefore would present some degree of Zn deficiency for sensitive crops.Fil: Sainz Rozas, Hernan Rene.     Reduced malignancy as a mechanism for longevity in mice with adenylyl cyclase type 5 disruption

    Disruption of adenylyl cyclase type 5 (AC5) knockout (KO) is a novel model for longevity. Because malignancy is a major cause of death and reduced lifespan in mice, the goal of this investigation was to examine the role of AC5KO in protecting against cancer. There have been numerous discoveries in genetically engineered mice over the past several decades, but few have been translated to the bedside. One major reason is that it is difficult to alter a gene in patients, but rather a pharmacological approach is more appropriate. The current investigation employs a parallel construction to examine the extent to which inhibiting AC5, either in a genetic knockout (KO) or by a specific pharmacological inhibitor protects against cancer. This study is unique, not only because a combined genetic and pharmacological approach is rare, but also there are no prior studies on the extent to which AC5 affects cancer. We found that AC5KO delayed age-related tumor incidence significantly, as well as protecting against mammary tumor development in AC5KO × MMTV-HER-2 neu mice, and B16F10 melanoma tumor growth, which can explain why AC5KO is a model of longevity. In addition, a Food and Drug Administration approved antiviral agent, adenine 9-β-D-arabinofuranoside (Vidarabine or AraAde), which specifically inhibits AC5, reduces LP07 lung and B16F10 melanoma tumor growth in syngeneic mice. Thus, inhibition of AC5 is a previously unreported mechanism for prevention of cancers associated with aging and that can be targeted by an available pharmacologic inhibitor, with potential consequent extension of lifespan.Fil: De Lorenzo, Mariana S..     Panorametry: suggestion of a method for mandibular measurements on panoramic radiographs

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Orthopantomography (panoramic radiography) has been used for the study of measurements involving particularly the prediction of the eruption of impacted lower third molars and analyses of measurements of the ramus and head of mandible. The discrepancies involved with the projection of this radiographic image has stimulated the search for further ways to use it, particularly in orthodontic treatments and oral and maxillofacial surgeries. The author proposes a graphimetric method for the mandible, based on panoramic radiography. The results are expressed in linear and angular measurements, aiming at bilateral comparisons as well as the determination of the proportion of skeletal and dental structures, individually and among themselves as a whole. The method has been named Panorametry, and allows measurement of the mandible (Mandibular Panorametry) or the posterior mandibular teeth (Dental Panorametry). When combining mandible and maxilla, it should be referred to as Total Panorametry. It may also be used, in the future, with Cone Beam computed tomography (CT) images, and in this case it may be mentioned as CT Panorametry.</p
