Planar Drawings of Fixed-Mobile Bigraphs
A fixed-mobile bigraph G is a bipartite graph such that the vertices of one
partition set are given with fixed positions in the plane and the mobile
vertices of the other part, together with the edges, must be added to the
drawing. We assume that G is planar and study the problem of finding, for a
given k >= 0, a planar poly-line drawing of G with at most k bends per edge. In
the most general case, we show NP-hardness. For k=0 and under additional
constraints on the positions of the fixed or mobile vertices, we either prove
that the problem is polynomial-time solvable or prove that it belongs to NP.
Finally, we present a polynomial-time testing algorithm for a certain type of
"layered" 1-bend drawings
Suitability of the nisin Z-producer lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis CBM 21 to be used as an adjunct culture for squacquerone cheese production
This research investigated the technological and safety effects of the nisin Z producer Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis CBM 21, tested as an adjunct culture for the making of Squacquerone cheese in a pilot-scale plant. The biocontrol agent remained at a high level throughout the cheese refrigerated storage, without having a negative influence on the viability of the conventional Streptococcus thermophilus starter. The inclusion of CBM 21 in Squacquerone cheesemaking proved to be more effective compared to the traditional one, to reduce total coliforms and Pseudomonas spp. Moreover, the novel/innovative adjunct culture tested did not negatively modify the proteolytic patterns of Squacquerone cheese, but it gave rise to products with specific volatile and texture profiles. The cheese produced with CBM 21 was more appreciated by the panelists with respect to the traditional one
Cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors. 1,5-diarylpyrrol-3-acetic esters with enhanced inhibitory activity toward cyclooxygenase-2 and improved cyclooxygenase-2/cyclooxygenase-1 selectivity.
he important role of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in the pathogenesis of inflammation and side effect limitations of current COX-2 inhibitor drugs illustrates a need for the design of new compounds based on alternative structural templates. We previously reported a set of substituted 1,5-diarylpyrrole derivatives, along with their inhibitory activity toward COX enzymes. Several compounds proved to be highly selective COX-2 inhibitors and their affinity data were rationalized through docking simulations. In this paper, we describe the synthesis of new 1,5-diarylpyrrole derivatives that were assayed for their in vitro inhibitory effects toward COX isozymes. Among them, the ethyl-2-methyl-5-[4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl]-1-[3-fluorophenyl]-1H-pyrrol-3- acetate (1d), which was the most potent and COX-2 selective compound, also showed a very interesting in vivo anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, laying the foundations for developing new lead compounds that could be effective agents in the armamentarium for the management of inflammation and pain
Axial Vector Charmonium and Bottomonium Hybrid Mass Predictions with QCD Sum-Rules
Axial vector charmonium and bottomonium hybrid masses are
determined via QCD Laplace sum-rules. Previous sum-rule studies in this channel
did not incorporate the dimension-six gluon condensate, which has been shown to
be important for and heavy quark hybrids. An updated analysis
of axial vector charmonium and bottomonium hybrids is presented, including the
effects of the dimension-six gluon condensate. The axial vector charmonium and
bottomonium hybrid masses are predicted to be 5.13 GeV and 11.32 GeV,
respectively. We discuss the implications of this result for the
charmonium-like XYZ states and the charmonium hybrid multiplet structure
observed in recent lattice calculations.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Updated to match published versio
The gluonic condensate from the hyperfine splitting in charmonium
The precision measurement of the hyperfine splitting MeV in the
Fermilab--E835 experiment allows to determine the gluonic condensate with
high accuracy if the gluonic correlation length is fixed. In our
calculations the negative value of MeV is
obtained only if the relatively small fm and
GeV are taken. These values correspond to the ``physical'' string tension
GeV). For fm the hyperfine splitting
is positive and grows for increasing . In particular for fm
and GeV the splitting MeV
is obtained, which is in accord with the recent CLEO result.Comment: 9 pages revtex 4, no figure
Hadron detection with a dual-readout fiber calorimeter
In this paper, we describe measurements of the response functions of a
fiber-based dual- readout calorimeter for pions, protons and multiparticle
"jets" with energies in the range from 10 to 180 GeV. The calorimeter uses lead
as absorber material and has a total mass of 1350 kg. It is complemented by
leakage counters made of scintillating plastic, with a total mass of 500 kg.
The effects of these leakage counters on the calorimeter performance are
studied as well. In a separate section, we investigate and compare different
methods to measure the energy resolution of a calorimeter. Using only the
signals provided by the calorimeter, we demonstrate that our dual-readout
calorimeter, calibrated with electrons, is able to reconstruct the energy of
proton and pion beam particles to within a few percent at all energies. The
fractional widths of the signal distributions for these particles (sigma/E)
scale with the beam energy as 30%/sqrt(E), without any additional contributing
terms

Interference Study of the chi_c0 (1^3P_0) in the Reaction Proton-Antiproton -> pi^0 pi^0
Fermilab experiment E835 has observed proton-antiproton annihilation
production of the charmonium state chi_c0 and its subsequent decay into pi^0
pi^0. Although the resonant amplitude is an order of magnitude smaller than
that of the non-resonant continuum production of pi^0 pi^0, an enhanced
interference signal is evident. A partial wave expansion is used to extract
physics parameters. The amplitudes J=0 and 2, of comparable strength, dominate
the expansion. Both are accessed by L=1 in the entrance proton-antiproton
channel. The product of the input and output branching fractions is determined
to be B(pbar p -> chi_c0) x B(chi_c0 -> pi^0 pi^0)= (5.09 +- 0.81 +- 0.25) x

Theoretical Overview: The New Mesons
After commenting on the state of contemporary hadronic physics and
spectroscopy, I highlight four areas where the action is: searching for the
relevant degrees of freedom, mesons with beauty and charm, chiral symmetry and
the D_{sJ} levels, and X(3872) and the lost tribes of charmonium.Comment: 10 pages, uses jpconf.cls; talk at First Meeting of the APS Topical
