Twisted and Nontwisted Bifurcations Induced by Diffusion
We discuss a diffusively perturbed predator-prey system. Freedman and
Wolkowicz showed that the corresponding ODE can have a periodic solution that
bifurcates from a homoclinic loop. When the diffusion coefficients are large,
this solution represents a stable, spatially homogeneous time-periodic solution
of the PDE. We show that when the diffusion coefficients become small, the
spatially homogeneous periodic solution becomes unstable and bifurcates into
spatially nonhomogeneous periodic solutions.
The nature of the bifurcation is determined by the twistedness of an
equilibrium/homoclinic bifurcation that occurs as the diffusion coefficients
decrease. In the nontwisted case two spatially nonhomogeneous simple periodic
solutions of equal period are generated, while in the twisted case a unique
spatially nonhomogeneous double periodic solution is generated through
period-doubling.

Almost sure convergence of a semidiscrete Milstein scheme for SPDE's of Zakai type
A semidiscrete Milstein scheme for stochastic partial differential equations of Zakai type on a bounded domain of R^d is derived. It is shown that the order of convergence of this scheme is 1 for convergence in mean square sense. For almost sure convergence the order of convergence is proved to be 1 - e for any e > 0
Symmetries of supergravity black holes
We investigate Killing tensors for various black hole solutions of
supergravity theories. Rotating black holes of an ungauged theory, toroidally
compactified heterotic supergravity, with NUT parameters and two U(1) gauge
fields are constructed. If both charges are set equal, then the solutions
simplify, and then there are concise expressions for rank-2 conformal
Killing-Stackel tensors. These are induced by rank-2 Killing-Stackel tensors of
a conformally related metric that possesses a separability structure. We
directly verify the separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation on this
conformally related metric, and of the null Hamilton-Jacobi and massless
Klein-Gordon equations on the "physical" metric. Similar results are found for
more general solutions; we mainly focus on those with certain charge
combinations equal in gauged supergravity, but also consider some other

Radiative spacetimes approaching the Vaidya metric
We analyze a class of exact type II solutions of the Robinson-Trautman family
which contain pure radiation and (possibly) a cosmological constant. It is
shown that these spacetimes exist for any sufficiently smooth initial data, and
that they approach the spherically symmetric Vaidya-(anti-)de Sitter metric. We
also investigate extensions of the metric, and we demonstrate that their order
of smoothness is in general only finite. Some applications of the results are

The 727 airplane target thrust reverser static performance model test for refanned JT8D engines
The results of a scale model static performance test of target thrust reverser configurations for the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft JT8D-100 series engine are presented. The objective of the test was to select a series of suitable candidate reverser configurations for the subsequent airplane model wind tunnel ingestion and flight controls tests. Test results indicate that adequate reverse thrust performance with compatible engine airflow match is achievable for the selected configurations. Tapering of the lips results in loss of performance and only minimal flow directivity. Door pressure surveys were conducted on a selected number of lip and fence configurations to obtain data to support the design of the thrust reverser system
Threshold effects in excited charmed baryon decays
Motivated by recent results on charmed baryons from CLEO and FOCUS, we
reexamine the couplings of the orbitally excited charmed baryons. Due to its
proximity to the [Sigma_c pi] threshold, the strong decays of the
Lambda_c(2593) are sensitive to finite width effects. This distorts the shape
of the invariant mass spectrum in Lambda_{c1}-> Lambda_c pi^+pi^- from a simple
Breit-Wigner resonance, which has implications for the experimental extraction
of the Lambda_c(2593) mass and couplings. We perform a fit to unpublished CLEO
data which gives M(Lambda_c(2593)) - M(Lambda_c) = 305.6 +- 0.3 MeV and h2^2 =
0.24^{+0.23}_{-0.11}, with h2 the Lambda_{c1}-> Sigma_c pi strong coupling in
the chiral Lagrangian. We also comment on the new orbitally excited states

Low-Power, High Data Rate Transceiver System for Implantable Prostheses
Wireless telemetry is crucial for long-term implantable neural recording systems. RF-encoded neurological signals often require high data-rates to transmit information from multiple electrodes with a sufficient sampling frequency and resolution. In this work, we quantify the effects of interferers and tissue attenuation on a wireless link for optimal design of future systems. The wireless link consists of an external receiver capable of demodulating FSK/OOK transmission at speeds up to 8 Mbps, with <1e-5 bit-error rate (BER) without error correction, and a fully implanted transmitter consuming about 1.05 mW. The external receiver is tested with the transmitter in vivo to show demodulation efficacy of the transcutaneous link at high data-rates. Transmitter/Receiver link BER is quantified in typical and controlled RF environments for ex vivo and in vivo performance
