Large spin-orbit splitting and weakly-anisotropic superconductivity revealed with single-crystalline noncentrosymmetric CaIrSi3
We report normal and superconducting properties of the Rashba-type
noncentrosymmetric com- pound CaIrSi3, using single crystalline samples with
nearly 100% superconducting volume fraction. The electronic density of states
revealed by the hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy can be well explained by
the relativistic first-principle band calculation. This indicates that strong
spin-orbit interaction indeed affects the electronic states of this compound.
The obtained H - T phase diagram exhibits only approximately 10% anisotropy,
indicating that the superconducting properties are almost three dimensional.
Nevertheless, strongly anisotropic vortex pinning is observed.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Crystallographic and superconducting properties of the fully-gapped noncentrosymmetric 5d-electron superconductors CaMSi3 (M=Ir, Pt)
We report crystallographic, specific heat, transport, and magnetic properties
of the recently discovered noncentrosymmetric 5d-electron superconductors
CaIrSi3 (Tc = 3.6 K) and CaPtSi3 (Tc = 2.3 K). The specific heat suggests that
these superconductors are fully gapped. The upper critical fields are less than
1 T, consistent with limitation by conventional orbital depairing. High,
non-Pauli-limited {\mu}0 Hc2 values, often taken as a key signature of novel
noncentrosymmetric physics, are not observed in these materials because the
high carrier masses required to suppress orbital depairing and reveal the
violated Pauli limit are not present.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
Entropy change at the martensitic transformation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni_{2+x}Mn_{1-x}Ga
The entropy change between the high-temperature cubic phase and
the low-temperature tetragonally-based martensitic phase of
NiMnGa () alloys was studied. The experimental
results obtained indicate that in the NiMnGa alloys
increases with the Ni excess . The increase of is presumably
accounted for by an increase of magnetic contribution to the entropy change. It
is suggested that the change in modulation of the martensitic phase of
NiMnGa results in discontinuity of the composition dependence

Observation of weak temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in highly-doped Si by using a non-local 3-terminal method
We conduct an experimental investigation of temperature dependence of spin
diffusion length in highly-doped n-type silicon by using a non-local 3-terminal
method. Whereas an effect of spin drift is not ignorable to bias- and
temperature-dependence of spin signals in non-metallic systems except for the
case of a non-local 4-terminal method, it is not fully conclusive how the spin
drift affects spin transport properties in highly-doped Si in a non-local
3-terminal method that is often used in Si spintronics. Here, we report on
temperature dependence of spin diffusion length in the Si, and it is clarified
that the spin transport is less affected by an external electric field.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure
Two-component Analogue of Two-dimensional Long Wave-Short Wave Resonance Interaction Equations: A Derivation and Solutions
The two-component analogue of two-dimensional long wave-short wave resonance
interaction equations is derived in a physical setting. Wronskian solutions of
the integrable two-component analogue of two-dimensional long wave-short wave
resonance interaction equations are presented.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, revised version; The pdf file including all

Differential-difference system related to toroidal Lie algebra
We present a novel differential-difference system in (2+1)-dimensional
space-time (one discrete, two continuum), arisen from the Bogoyavlensky's
(2+1)-dimensional KdV hierarchy. Our method is based on the bilinear identity
of the hierarchy, which is related to the vertex operator representation of the
toroidal Lie algebra \sl_2^{tor}.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, pLaTeX2e, uses amsmath, amssymb, amsthm,

Simulations of the Population of Centaurs I: The Bulk Statistics
Large-scale simulations of the Centaur population are carried out. The
evolution of 23328 particles based on the orbits of 32 well-known Centaurs is
followed for up to 3 Myr in the forward and backward direction under the
influence of the 4 massive planets. The objects exhibit a rich variety of
dynamical behaviour with half-lives ranging from 540 kyr (1996 AR20) to 32 Myr
(2000 FZ53). The mean half-life of the entire sample of Centaurs is 2.7 Myr.
The data are analyzed using a classification scheme based on the controlling
planets at perihelion and aphelion, previously given in Horner et al (2003).
Transfer probabilities are computed and show the main dynamical pathways of the
Centaur population. The total number of Centaurs with diameters larger than 1
km is estimated as roughly 44300, assuming an inward flux of one new
short-period comet every 200 yrs. The flux into the Centaur region from the
Edgeworth-Kuiper belt is estimated to be 1 new object every 125 yrs. Finally,
the flux from the Centaur region to Earth-crossing orbits is 1 new
Earth-crosser every 880 yrsComment: 15 pages, 2 figures, MNRAS in pres
Characterization and Compensation of the Residual Chirp in a Mach-Zehnder-Type Electro-Optical Intensity Modulator
We utilize various techniques to characterize the residual phase modulation
of a fiber-based Mach-Zehnder electro-optical intensity modulator. A heterodyne
technique is used to directly measure the phase change due to a given change in
intensity, thereby determining the chirp parameter of the device. This chirp
parameter is also measured by examining the ratio of sidebands for sinusoidal
amplitude modulation. Finally, the frequency chirp caused by an intensity pulse
on the nanosecond time scale is measured via the heterodyne signal. We show
that this chirp can be largely compensated with a separate phase modulator. The
various measurements of the chirp parameter are in reasonable agreement.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Genomic Organization, Splice Variants and Expression of CGMl, a CD66-related Member of the Carcinoembryonic Antigen Gene Family
The tumor marker carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) belongs to a family of proteins which are composed of one immunogiobulin variable domain and a varying number of immunoglobulin constant-like domains. Most of the membrane-bound members, which are anchored either by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol moiety or a transmembrane domain, have been shown to convey cell adhesion in vitro. Here we describe two splice variants of CGMI. a transmembrane member of the CEA family without immunoglobulin constant.like domains. CGM1a and CGM1c contain cytopiasmic domains of 71 and 31 amino acids, respectively, The cytoplasmic region of CGM1a is encoded by four exons (Cyt1-Cyt4). Differential splicing of the Cyt1 exon (53 bp)..
