The reciprocal relationship between the state and union formation across Western Europe: policy dimensions and theoretical considerations

Although cohabitation and childbearing within cohabitation has increased dramatically in Europe over the past decades, the variation across Europe remains remarkable. Most studies on changing union formation have not explicitly addressed how state policies may be facilitating cohabitation or, alternatively, stalling the increase of cohabitation by privileging marriage. Indeed, the relationship between policies and union formation is complicated, as states may have passed legislation in response to increasing cohabitation. As a first step to understanding this reciprocal relationship, we provide here an overview of the policies that may impact union formation. Drawing on secondary sources and legal documents, we describe the policy dimensions that regulate the relationship between couples, and between couples and their children. We also discuss theoretical issues and explore examples from across Western Europe. As a whole, this overview raises questions about the changing “institution” of marriage, as well as the increasing “institutionalization” of cohabitation.Europe, cohabitation

Loop homology of spheres and complex projective spaces

In his Inventiones paper, Ziller (Invent. Math: 1-22, 1977) computed the integral homology as a graded abelian group of the free loop space of compact, globally symmetric spaces of rank 1. Chas and Sullivan (String Topology, 1999)showed that the homology of the free loop space of a compact closed orientable manifold can be equipped with a loop product and a BV-operator making it a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) developed a spectral sequence which converges to the loop homology as a spectral sequence of algebras. They computed the algebra structure of the loop homology of spheres and complex projective spaces by using Ziller's results and the method of Brown-Shih (Ann. of Math. 69:223-246, 1959, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes \'Etudes Sci. 3: 93-176, 1962). In this note we compute the loop homology algebra by using only spectral sequences and the technique of universal examples. We therefore not only obtain Zillers' and Brown-Shihs' results in an elementary way, we also replace the roundabout computations of Cohen, Jones and Yan (The loop homology algebra of spheres and projective spaces, 2004) making them independent of Ziller's and Brown-Shihs' work. Moreover we offer an elementary technique which we expect can easily be generalized and applied to a wider family of spaces, not only the globally symmetric ones.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

Staurosira magallanesica, a replacement name for Staurosira patagonica

Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales described a new species found in material of Maar Magallanes, Patagonia, Argentina and other lakes in southern Patagonia. This new species was analysed in detail by light and electron microscopy and a comprehensive description is given in Garcia et al. (2017: 107, 114, figs 2-45). However, this name is a later homonym of Staurosira patagonica Cleve, 1882. If we compare our species to Cleve’s illustration (Cleve 1882: pl. 16: fig. 13), we can easily differentiate the two by their general valve outline and morphometric data. As pointed out by Garcia et al. (2017), re-examination of the type material of members of the Fragilariaceae is needed to confirm identities, establish taxonomic boundaries and to facilitate identification, and this is also the case with Staurosira patagonica Cleve. A new name is, however, required for Staurosira patagonica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales as it is an illegitimate name: Staurosira magallanesica M.L.Garcia, Maidana, Ector & E.Morales nom. nov. Humboldt County has an active food system of small, sustainable farms and a vibrant cottage food industry. Yet, this system fails to address the needs of a diverse population that struggles with a disproportionate degree of poor health outcomes. In order to understand the unique challenges facing the region’s food system – and how local government and advocacy groups should begin to address healthy food policy - this research thesis analyzes key texts about food, which illustrate the language and ideologies of eating local in Humboldt County. This research thesis found that the concept of eating local – consuming foodstuffs produced in close proximity or naturally indigenous to the environment – has been both a cause and effect of cultural change in Humboldt County. In order to understand how the community talks about food today – with “eating local” being a central element of the rhetoric – this thesis analyzed a collection of regional cookbooks for historic perspective. Functioning as textual archives about food, cookbooks both reflect and construct discourse about Humboldt County’s food system and eating local today. Through this research, it’s evident that heritage Humboldt County foods - specifically salmon, oysters, crab, beef, and dairy – decreased in cultural significance throughout the 20thcentury. Yet, in recent years, the discourse around eating local has amplified, with language about improving community health and eating local tightly embedded. In effort to create a food system that truly feeds everyone’s needs, this research thesis explains how the narrative around the meaning of “eating local” has shifted over time
