    Recycling of Neodymium and Dysprosium from Permanent Magnets

    This project seeks to recycle neodymium and dysprosium from used neodymium-iron-boron, NdFeB, permanent magnets. Our alternative recycling strategy is based on a method developed by Dr. Eric Schelter of the University of Pennsylvania Department of Chemistry and his research group. This process involves the use of a novel tripodal nitroxide ligand, H3TriNOX. The proposed process design converts used NdFeB magnets to neodymium and dysprosium. The goal production of neodymium oxide is 126,000 kg/year and of dysprosium oxide is 14,000 kg/year, which would cost $12,500,000 with the current price rate of neodymium and dysprosium. Based on the results of the economic analysis, this project would be unprofitable in the near future

    A Phase Transition between Small and Large Field Models of Inflation

    We show that models of inflection point inflation exhibit a phase transition from a region in parameter space where they are of large field type to a region where they are of small field type. The phase transition is between a universal behavior, with respect to the initial condition, at the large field region and non-universal behavior at the small field region. The order parameter is the number of e-foldings. We find integer critical exponents at the transition between the two phases.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure

    PP Wave Limit and Enhanced Supersymmetry in Gauge Theories

    We observe that the pp wave limit of AdS5×M5AdS_5\times M^5 compactifications of type IIB string theory is universal, and maximally supersymmetric, as long as M5M^5 is smooth and preserves some supersymmetry. We investigate a specific case, M5=T1,1M^5=T^{1,1}. The dual N=1{\cal N}=1 SCFT, describing D3-branes at a conifold singularity, has operators that we identify with the oscillators of the light-cone string in the universal pp-wave background. The correspondence is remarkable in that it relies on the exact spectrum of anomalous dimensions in this CFT, along with the existence of certain exceptional series of operators whose dimensions are protected only in the limit of large `t Hooft coupling. We also briefly examine the singular case M5=S5/Z2M^5=S^5/Z_2, for which the pp wave background becomes a Z2Z_2 orbifold of the maximally supersymmetric background by reflection of 4 transverse coordinates.     Type Three Secretion System-Dependent Microvascular Thrombosis and Ischemic Enteritis in Human Gut Xenografts Infected with Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli

    Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) is a leading cause of severe intestinal disease and infant mortality in developing countries. Virulence is mediated by a type three secretion system (T3SS), causing the hallmark attaching and effacing (AE) lesions and actin-rich pedestal formation beneath the infecting bacteria on the apical surface of enterocytes. EPEC is a human-specific pathogen whose pathogenesis cannot be studied in animal models. We therefore established an EPEC infection model in human gut xenografts in SCID mice and used it to study the role of T3SS in the pathogenesis of the disease. Following EPEC O127: H6 strain E2348/69 infection, T3SS-dependent AE lesions and pedestals were demonstrated in all infected xenografts. We report here the development of T3SS-dependent intestinal thrombotic microangiopathy (iTMA) and ischemic enteritis in similar to 50% of infected human gut xenografts. Using species-specific CD31 immunostaining, we showed that iTMA was limited to the larger human-mouse chimeric blood vessels, which are located between the muscularis mucosa and circular muscular layer of the human gut. These blood vessels were massively invaded by bacteria, which adhered to and formed pedestals on endothelial cells and aggregated with mouse neutrophils in the lumen. We conclude that endothelial infection, iTMA, and ischemic enteritis might be central mechanisms underlying severe EPEC-mediated disease

    Climate impacts on disasters, infectious diseases and nutrition

    The Zika virus epidemic that emerged in northeast Brazil in 2015 occurred during an unusually warm and dry year. Both natural climate variability as well as longterm trends were responsible for the extreme temperatures observed1 and these climate conditions are likely to have contributed to the timing and scale of this devastating epidemic. Knowledge of this climate context is derived from analyses of large-scale global climate datasets and models, which provide policy-makers with broad insights into changes in hydro-meteorological extremes. However, societal response to epidemics works at multiple levels. For instance, policies and resource commitments may be developed at international and national levels, while targeted prevention and control efforts are managed at local levels by district health teams and community leaders. Adaptation to climate change also needs to be developed at multiple levels. National level information may be needed for planning, but an understanding of the local weather and climate that individuals and communities experience is also required. Once specific climate-sensitive health risks are identified, information on the past, present or future climate can be used to help mitigate risks and identify new opportunities for improved health outcomes. This information needs to be provided as a routine service if it is to support operational decision-making
