    Ultrastructure of meristem and root cap of pea seedlings under spaceflight conditions

    Data of electron microscopic analysis of meristem and root cap of pea seedlings grown aboard the Salyut-6 orbital research station in the Oazis apparatus and in the laboratory are presented. The main morphological and anatomical characteristics of the test and control plants are shown to be similar. At the same time, some differences are found in the structural and functional organization of the experimental cells as compared to the controls. They concern first of all the plastic apparatus, mitochondria and Golgi apparatus. It is assumed that cell function for certain periods of weightlessness on the whole ensures execution of the cytodifferentiation programs genetically determined on the Earth.     Dynamics of the Free Surface of a Conducting Liquid in a Near-Critical Electric Field

    Near-critical behavior of the free surface of an ideally conducting liquid in an external electric field is considered. Based on an analysis of three-wave processes using the method of integral estimations, sufficient criteria for hard instability of a planar surface are formulated. It is shown that the higher-order nonlinearities do not saturate the instability, for which reason the growth of disturbances has an explosive character.Comment: 19 page

    Multi-frequency Studies of Massive Cores with Complex Spatial and Kinematic Structures

    Five regions of massive star formation have been observed in various molecular lines in the frequency range 8589\sim 85-89 GHz. The studied regions possess dense cores, which host young stellar objects. The physical parameters of the cores are estimated, including kinetic temperatures (2040\sim 20-40 K), sizes of the emitting regions (0.10.6\sim 0.1-0.6 pc), and virial masses (40500M\sim 40-500 M_{\odot}). Column densities and abundances of various molecules are calculated in the local thermodynamical equilibrium approximation. The core in 99.982+4.17, associated with the weakest IRAS source, is characterized by reduced molecular abundances. Molecular line widths decrease with increasing distance from the core centers (bb). For b\ga 0.1~pc, the dependences ΔV(b)\Delta V(b) are close to power laws (bp\propto b^{-p}), where pp varies from 0.2\sim 0.2 to 0.5\sim 0.5, depending on the object. In four cores, the asymmetries of the optically thick HCN(1--0) and HCO+^+(1--0) lines indicate systematic motions along the line of sight: collapse in two cores and expansion in two others. Approximate estimates of the accretion rates in the collapsing cores indicate that the forming stars have masses exceeding the solar mass.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 6 table

    The spectral form factor is not self-averaging

    The spectral form factor, k(t), is the Fourier transform of the two level correlation function C(x), which is the averaged probability for finding two energy levels spaced x mean level spacings apart. The average is over a piece of the spectrum of width W in the neighborhood of energy E0. An additional ensemble average is traditionally carried out, as in random matrix theory. Recently a theoretical calculation of k(t) for a single system, with an energy average only, found interesting nonuniversal semiclassical effects at times t approximately unity in units of {Planck's constant) /(mean level spacing). This is of great interest if k(t) is self-averaging, i.e, if the properties of a typical member of the ensemble are the same as the ensemble average properties. We here argue that this is not always the case, and that for many important systems an ensemble average is essential to see detailed properties of k(t).     Collapse and stable self-trapping for Bose-Einstein condensates with 1/r^b type attractive interatomic interaction potential

    We consider dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range attractive interaction proportional to 1/rb1/r^b and arbitrary angular dependence. It is shown exactly that collapse of Bose-Einstein condensate without contact interactions is possible only for b2b\ge 2. Case b=2b=2 is critical and requires number of particles to exceed critical value to allow collapse. Critical collapse in that case is strong one trapping into collapsing region a finite number of particles. Case b>2b>2 is supercritical with expected weak collapse which traps rapidly decreasing number of particles during approach to collapse. For b<2b<2 singularity at r=0r=0 is not strong enough to allow collapse but attractive 1/rb1/r^b interaction admits stable self-trapping even in absence of external trapping potential

    Acoustic Cyclotron Resonance and Giant High Frequency Magnetoacoustic Oscillations in Metals with Locally Flattened Fermi Surface

    We consider the effect of local flattening on the Fermi surface (FS) of a metal upon geometric oscillations of the velocity and attenuation of ultrasonic waves in the neighborhood of the acoustic cyclotron resonance. It is shown that such peculiarities of the local geometry of the FS can lead to a significant enhancement of both cyclotron resonance and geometric oscillations. Characteristic features of the coupling of ultrasound to shortwave cyclotron waves arising due to the local flattening of the FS are analyzed.     Phase dependent current statistics in short-arm Andreev interferometer

    We calculate analytically the current statistics for a short diffusive wire between the normal reservoir and a short superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) junction, at arbitrary applied voltages and temperatures. The cumulant-generating function oscillates with the phase difference ϕ\phi across the junction, approaching the normal-state value at ϕ=π\phi=\pi. At T=0 and at the applied voltage much smaller than the proximity gap Δϕ\Delta_\phi, the current noise PIP_I doubles and the third current cumulant C3C_3 is 4 times larger with respect to their values in the normal state; at eVΔϕeV \gg \Delta_\phi they acquire large excess components. At the gap edge, eV=ΔϕeV = \Delta_\phi, the effective transferred charge defined through dPI/dIdP_I/dI and dPI/dVdP_I/dV approaches 0e0e and 3e3e, respectively, which makes doubtful the interpretation of these quantities as physical elementary transferred charge. At T0T \neq 0, C3C_3 shows a non-monotonous voltage dependence with a dip near eV=ΔϕeV = \Delta_\phi.Comment: 13 pages, to be published in Proc.
