Large ethnic variations in recommended physical activity according to activity domains in amsterdam, the netherlands
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>The level of recommended physical activity (PA) is met less frequently by people from some ethnic minorities than others. We explored whether these differences in recommended PA between ethnic minority groups and the general population varied by domain and type of culturally-specific activity.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Participants were sampled from the population based SUNSET study and were from ethnic Dutch (n = 567), Hindustani-Surinamese (n = 370) and African-Surinamese (n = 689) descent. The validated SQUASH-questionnaire measured PA for the following domains: commuting, occupation, household, leisure time. Culturally-specific activities were added as extra question within the leisure time domain. The effect of each domain on ethnic differences in recommended PA prevalence was examined by odds-ratio (OR) analysis through recalculating recommended PA, while, in turn, excluding the contribution of each domain.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In the ethnic Dutch population, more vigorous PA in commuting and leisure time was reported compared to the Surinamese groups. The Hindustani-Surinamese and African-Surinamese reported more walking as commuting activity, while the Dutch group reported cycling more frequently. Ethnic differences in recommended PA became smaller in both Surinamese groups compared with the Dutch after removing commuting activity, for example, in Hindustani-Surinamese men (OR = 0.92, 95%CI: 0.62-1.37 vs. OR = 1.33, 0.89-2.00) and women (OR = 1.61, 1.12-2.32 vs. OR = 2.03, 1.41-2.92). Removing occupational activity resulted in larger ethnic differences in both groups compared with the Dutch. Smaller effects were found for yoga and dancing, leisure time and household activities.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study shows that differences in PA between ethnic minority groups and the general population vary according to the activity domain. The results indicate that including all relevant domains and activities is essential for assessment of ethnic differences in recommended PA.</p
Racial Differences in Abnormal Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Measures: Results From the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study
Background:
Several ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) measures have been associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk independent of clinic blood pressure (BP). African Americans have higher clinic BP compared with Whites but few data are available on racial differences in ABPM measures.
Methods:
We compared ABPM measures between African American (n = 178) and White (n = 103) participants at the Year 5 Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study visit. BP was measured during a study visit and the second and third measurements were averaged. ABPM was conducted over the following 24 hours.
Results:
Mean ± SD age of participants was 29.8±3.8 years and 30.8±3.5 years for African Americans and Whites, respectively. Mean daytime systolic BP (SBP) was 3.90 (SD 1.18) mm Hg higher among African Americans compared with Whites (P < 0.001) after age–gender adjustment and 1.71 (SD 1.03) mm Hg higher after multivariable adjustment including mean clinic SBP (P = 0.10). After multivariable adjustment including mean clinic SBP, nighttime SBP was 4.83 (SD 1.11) mm Hg higher among African Americans compared with Whites (P < 0.001). After multivariable adjustment, the African Americans were more likely than Whites to have nocturnal hypertension (prevalence ratio: 2.44, 95% CI: 0.99–6.05) and nondipping (prevalence ratio: 2.50, 95% CI: 1.39–4.48). The prevalence of masked hypertension among African Americans and Whites was 4.4% and 2.1%, respectively, (P = 0.49) and white coat hypertension was 3.3% and 3.9%, respectively (P = 0.99). Twenty-four hour BP variability on ABPM was higher among African Americans compared with Whites.
Conclusions:
These data suggest racial differences in several ABPM measures exist

Reflection of neutrons from an optical grating
Specular and off-specular neutron intensities were measured at grazing incidence from an optical grating. Thee periodicity of the grating was determined from the locations of the intensity peaks in the off-specular data. An analysis of the widths of the off-specular intensity peaks showed that the effect of the coherence length of the neutron beam on the determination of a surface length scale {approximately}30 {mu}m was negligible compared to that of the instrument resolution. Although the structure of an optical grating used in this paper is simple, it has served to illustrate the simple relationship between the off-specular data structure and the real-space properties. For more general rough systems, a practical theoretical model will be needed to relate the off-specular data to the real-space roughness structure so that the diffusive data can be analyzed. Owing to the intrinsic complexity of diffuse scattering, the development of such a theoretical model will be a significant technical challenge, and its solution will constitute a major breakthrough in the development of the diffuse reflectivity technique for rough surface/interface characterization
Neuro-Cells therapy improves motor outcomes and suppresses inflammation during experimental syndrome of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in mice
Aims: Mutations in DNA/RNA-binding factor (fused-in-sarcoma) FUS and superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD-1) cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). They were reproduced in SOD-1-G93A (SOD-1) and new FUS[1-359]-transgenic (FUS-tg) mice, where inflammation contributes to disease progression. The effects of standard disease therapy and anti-inflammatory treatments were investigated using these mutants. Methods: FUS-tg mice or controls received either vehicle, or standard ALS treatment riluzole (8 mg/kg/day), or anti-inflammatory drug a selective blocker of cyclooxygenase-2 celecoxib (30 mg/kg/day) for six weeks, or a single intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) infusion of Neuro-Cells (a preparation of 1.39 × 106 mesenchymal and hemopoietic human stem cells, containing 5 × 105 of CD34+ cells), which showed anti-inflammatory properties. SOD-1 mice received i.c.v.-administration of Neuro-Cells or vehicle. Results: All FUS-tg-treated animals displayed less marked reductions in weight gain, food/water intake, and motor deficits than FUS-tg-vehicle-treated mice. Neuro-Cell-treated mutants had reduced muscle atrophy and lumbar motor neuron degeneration. This group but not celecoxib-FUS-tg-treated mice had ameliorated motor performance and lumbar expression of microglial activation marker, ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule-1 (Iba-1), and glycogen-synthase-kinase-3ß (GSK-3ß). The Neuro-Cells-treated-SOD-1 mice showed better motor functions than vehicle-treated-SOD-1 group. Conclusion: The neuropathology in FUS-tg mice is sensitive to standard ALS treatments and Neuro-Cells infusion. The latter improves motor outcomes in two ALS models possibly by suppressing microglial activation. © 2019 The Authors. Diet-Quality Scores and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Men
Objective: To 1) compare associations of diet-quality scores, which were inversely associated with cardiovascular disease, with incident type 2 diabetes and 2) test for differences in absolute-risk reduction across various strata. Research Design and Methods: Men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, who were initially free of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer (n = 41,615), were followed for years. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) 2005, the alternative HEI (aHEI) the Recommended Food Score, the alternative Mediterranean Diet (aMED) Score, and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) Score were calculated from food-frequency questionnaires. Cox proportional hazard models with time-varying covariates were used to assess risk by quintiles and continuous intervals. Results: There were 2,795 incident cases of type 2 diabetes. After multivariate adjustment, the aHEI, aMED, and DASH scores were significantly associated with reduced risk. A 1-SD increase was associated with 9–13% reduced risk (P < 0.01), and the DASH score was associated with lower risk independent of other scores. These scores were associated with lower absolute risk among those who were overweight or obese compared with normal weight (P for interaction < 0.01). Conclusions: Several diet-quality scores were associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes and reflect a common dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of plant-based foods such as whole grains; moderate alcohol; and low intakes of red and processed meat, sodium, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fat. High-quality diets may yield the greatest reduction in diabetes cases when followed by those with a high BMI
The Ki-67 and Repoman mitotic phosphatases assemble via an identical, yet novel mechanism
Ki-67 and RepoMan have key roles during mitotic exit. Previously (Booth et al, eLife, 2014), we showed that Ki-67 organizes the mitotic chromosome periphery and recruits protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) to chromatin at anaphase onset, in a similar manner as RepoMan. Here we show how Ki-67 and RepoMan form mitotic exit phosphatases by recruiting PP1, how they distinguish between distinct PP1 isoforms and how the assembly of these two holoenzymes are dynamically regulated by Aurora B kinase during mitosis. Unexpectedly, our data also reveal that Ki-67 and RepoMan bind PP1 using an identical, yet entirely novel mechanism, interacting with a PP1 pocket that is engaged only by these two PP1 regulators. These findings not only show how two distinct mitotic exit phosphatases are recruited to their substrates, but also provides immediate opportunities for the design of novel cancer therapeutics that selectively target the Ki-67:PP1 and RepoMan:PP1 holoenzymes
Prioritizing the mental health and well-being of healthcare workers : an urgent global public health priority
The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on health systems in most
countries, and in particular, on the mental health and well-being of health workers on
the frontlines of pandemic response efforts. The purpose of this article is to provide
an evidence-based overview of the adverse mental health impacts on healthcare
workers during times of crisis and other challenging working conditions and to highlight
the importance of prioritizing and protecting the mental health and well-being of the
healthcare workforce, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. First,
we provide a broad overview of the elevated risk of stress, burnout, moral injury,
depression, trauma, and other mental health challenges among healthcare workers.
Second, we consider how public health emergencies exacerbate these concerns, as
reflected in emerging research on the negative mental health impacts of the COVID-
19 pandemic on healthcare workers. Further, we consider potential approaches for
overcoming these threats to mental health by exploring the value of practicing selfcare
strategies, and implementing evidence based interventions and organizational
measures to help protect and support the mental health and well-being of the healthcare
workforce. Lastly, we highlight systemic changes to empower healthcare workers
and protect their mental health and well-being in the long run, and propose policy
recommendations to guide healthcare leaders and health systems in this endeavor. This
paper acknowledges the stressors, burdens, and psychological needs of the healthcare
workforce across health systems and disciplines, and calls for renewed efforts to mitigate these challenges among those working on the frontlines during public health emergencies

Effects of White Space in Learning via the Web
This study measured the effect of specific white space features on learning from instructional Web materials. The study also measured learners' beliefs regarding Web-based instruction. Prior research indicated that small changes in the handling of presentation elements can affect learning. Achievement results from this study indicated that in on-line materials, when content and overall structure are sound, minor differences regarding table borders and vertical spacing in text do not hinder learning. Beliefs regarding Web-based instruction and instructors who use it did not differ significantly between treatment groups.
