    Agrochemicals use in horticulture industry in Tanzania and their potential impact to water resources

    The objective of this review was to analyze the existing information on the use of agrochemicals (Fertilizers and Pesticides) in the TanzanianĀ  horticulture industry especially the Northern regions and their potential to impacting water resources. Agrochemicals play an important role inĀ  horticulture, and have been widely used in Tanzania for crop protection and increasing productivity. Apart from these benefits, agrochemicals have the potential to impair the quality of water resources for different end uses. Majority of communities in Tanzania depend on surface water from rivers and lakes for potable uses such as washing, drinking and domesticĀ  animals also drink from these sources. Reports from studies done in Northern Tanzania have indicated the presence of significant levels of pesticides, phosphates and nitrates in surface and groundwater. It isĀ  apparent that most of the horticultural farms in Northern Tanzania are located on gently sloping land adjacent to water bodies. Thus discharges of wastewaters from horticulture farms may affect the quality of waterĀ  resources through run-off and groundwater through infiltration if proper management of the agrochemicals is not well adhered to. TheĀ  agrochemicals that have been widely used and identified as potential environmental pollutants from their use as horticultural chemicals areĀ  reviewed. The potentially adverse impacts of these agrochemicals to water resources are discussed. The review concludes with a discussion of the directions for further investigation.     Performance of Vertically Stacked Horizontal Si Nanowires Transistors: A 3D Monte Carlo / 2D Poisson Schrodinger Simulation Study

    In this paper we present a simulation study of 5nm vertically stacked lateral nanowires transistor (NWTs). The study is based on calibration of drift-diffusion results against a Poisson-Schrodinger simulations for density-gradient quantum corrections, and against ensemble Monte Carlo simulations to calibrate carrier transport. As a result of these calibrated results, we have established a link between channel strain and the device performance. Additionally, we have compared the current flow in a single, double and triple vertically stacked lateral NWTs

    HIV/AIDS and pregnancy-related deaths in Blantyre, Malawi

    Background: HIV/AIDS epidemic is one of the major factors affecting womenā€™s health and impeding national efforts to improve it especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Current evidence indicates that HIV/ AIDS is increasingly becoming a major cause or contributing factor to pregnancy-related deaths, almost overtaking the ā€œtraditionalā€ causes and factors. Objectives: To survey the contribution of HIV infection and AIDS to pregnancy-related deaths in Blantyre, Malawi. Design: A retrospective, descriptive, facility-based survey. Setting: The Queen Elizabeth Central Teaching Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi. Subjects: All women recorded to have had pregnancy-related deaths between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2000. Results: There were 204 maternal deaths, 154 (75.5%) direct, the top five causes being puerperal sepsis (39.0%), postabortion complications (31.2%), obstetric haemorrhage (14.3%), eclampsia (8.4%) and ectopic pregnancy (3.9%). At least 38 (18.6%) of the total were HIV positive or had AIDS. The main causes of deaths amongst these were meningitis (23.7%), pneumonia (18.4%), puerperal sepsis (13.2%), postabortal sepsis (10.5%), severe anaemia (10.5%) and pulmonary tuberculosis (10.5%) Of those who died of puerperal and postabortal sepsis in the whole study group 8.3% had HIV/AIDS. Of the indirect maternal deaths, 50 (58%) were HIV positive or had AIDS. Conclusion and recommendations: HIV/AIDS contributes to both direct and indirect maternal deaths in Malawi. National strategies to realise MDG5 targets should include addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic within the entire population as well as scaling up contraceptive uptake and utilisation, especially amongst the most vulnerable groups

    Attempts to identify Cassava Brown Streak Virus in western Democratic Republic of Congo

    Open Access ArticleRoot necrosis similar to those of the cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) were observed on cassava in western provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR.Congo) in the early 2000ā€™s. However molecular laboratory diagnosis were not able to detect any causative agent responsible for the attacks, hence, the disease related to these symptoms was named CBSD-like disease. In order to assess the distribution and the incidence of the CBSD-like disease, surveys were carried out in four western provinces, comprising, Kwango and Kwilu, Sud Ubangi, Kinshasa and Kongo Central. CBSD-like disease was observed in all surveyed provinces on the basis of root symptoms because foliar symptoms were different to those of the documented cases of CBSD in other parts of east Africa. CBSD-like disease incidence was high in Kongo Central and Sud Ubangi, exceeding an average of 50 %, but low in Kwango and Kwilu (32.8%) and in Kinshasa (19.1%). During the surveys, cassava leaf samples were collected for lab identification of the causal agent. PCR diagnosis was done on these samples using primers specific for the two known CBSVs. All samples tested negative with no amplification of DNA fragments of the correct size. Thus, further analysis on the causative organism is needed using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) approaches. NGS approaches will help also to identify the causative organism in other Central Africa countries (Angola, Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon) where such cassava root necrosis have been reported or are suspected
