    Intelligent Financial Fraud Detection Practices: An Investigation

    Financial fraud is an issue with far reaching consequences in the finance industry, government, corporate sectors, and for ordinary consumers. Increasing dependence on new technologies such as cloud and mobile computing in recent years has compounded the problem. Traditional methods of detection involve extensive use of auditing, where a trained individual manually observes reports or transactions in an attempt to discover fraudulent behaviour. This method is not only time consuming, expensive and inaccurate, but in the age of big data it is also impractical. Not surprisingly, financial institutions have turned to automated processes using statistical and computational methods. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation on financial fraud detection practices using such data mining methods, with a particular focus on computational intelligence-based techniques. Classification of the practices based on key aspects such as detection algorithm used, fraud type investigated, and success rate have been covered.     Complex Pediatric Elbow Injury: An Uncommon Case

    BACKGROUND: There is paucity of literature describing complex elbow trauma in the pediatric population. We described a case of an uncommon pediatric elbow injury comprised of lateral condyle fracture associated with posterolateral dislocation of elbow. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old boy sustained a direct elbow trauma and presented with Milch type II lateral condyle fracture associated with posterolateral dislocation of elbow. Elbow dislocation was managed by closed reduction. The elbow stability was assessed under general anaesthesia, followed by open K-wiring for the lateral condylar fracture fixation. The patient had an uneventful recovery with an excellent outcome at 39 months follow-up. CONCLUSION: Complex pediatric elbow injuries are quite unusual to encounter, the management of such fractures can be technically demanding. Concomitant elbow dislocation should be managed by closed reduction followed by open reduction and internal fixation (K-wires or cannulated screws) of the lateral condyle fracture

    The consequences of financial fraud are an issue with far-reaching for investors, lenders, regulators, corporate sectors and consumers. The range of development of new technologies such as cloud and mobile computing in recent years has compounded the problem. Manual detection which is a traditional method is not only inaccurate, expensive and time-consuming but also they are impractical for the management of big data. Auditors, financial institutions and regulators have tried to automated processes using statistical and computational methods. This paper presents comprehensive research in financial statement fraud detection by using machine learning techniques with a particular focus on computational intelligence (CI) techniques. We have collected a sample of 2469 observations since 2002 to 2015. Research gap was identified as none of the existing researchers address the association between financial statement fraud and CI-based detection algorithms and their performance, as reported in the literature. Also, the innovation of this research is that the selection of data sample is aimed to create models which will be capable of detecting the falsification in financial statements

    We present the case of a 14-year-old male with Scheuermannā€™s disease and significant neurological deficit due to thoracic disk herniation at the apex of kyphosis. He was treated with an anterior decompression, anterior and posterior fusion in the same setting using plate, cage and a segmental instrumentation system.     <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Patients who have suffered obstetric brachial plexus injury (OBPI) have a high incidence of musculoskeletal complications stemming from the initial nerve injury. The presence of muscle imbalances and contractures leads to typical bony changes affecting the shoulder, including the SHEAR (Scapular Hypoplasia, Elevation and Rotation) deformity. The SHEAR deformity commonly occurs in conjunction with Medial Rotation Contracture (MRC) of the arm. OBPI also causes muscle imbalances at the level of the forearm, that lead to a fixed supination deformity (SD) in a small number of patients. Both MRC and SD will cause severe functional limitations without surgical intervention.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Fourteen OBPI patients were diagnosed with MRC of the shoulder and SD of the forearm along with SHEAR deformity during a 16 month study period, with eight patients available to long-term follow-up (age range 2.2 ā€“ 18 years). Surgical correction of the MRC was performed as a triangle tilt or humeral osteotomy depending on the age of the child, after which, the patients were treated with a radial osteotomy to correct the fixed supination deformity. Function was assessed using the modified Mallet scale, examination of apparent supination and appearance of the extremity at rest.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Significant functional improvements were observed in patients with surgical reconstruction. Mallet score increased by an average of 5.2 (p < 0.05). Overall forearm position was not significantly changed from an average of 5Ā° to an average of 34Ā° maximum apparent supination after both shoulder rotation and forearm rotation corrective surgeries.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The simultaneous presence of two opposing deformities in the same limb will visually offset each other at the level of the wrist and hand, giving the false impression of neutral positioning of the limb. In reality, the neutral-appearing position of the hand indicates a fixed supination posture of the forearm in the face of a medial rotation contracture of the shoulder. Both of these deformities require surgical attention, and the presence of concurrent MRC and SD should be monitored for in OBPI patients.</p

    Anterior cruciate ligament deficiency reduces walking economy in ā€œcopersā€ and ā€œnon-copersā€

    Purpose: Patients with ACL injury requiring surgical treatment (non-copers) demonstrate altered neuromuscular control and gait pattern compared with those returning to their pre-injury activities without surgery (copers). Pathological gait pattern may increase the energy cost of walking. We compared the energy cost of flat, uphill, and downhill walking between ACL-deficient and healthy individuals and between ā€œcopersā€ and ā€œnon-copersā€. Methods: Nineteen young males with unilateral ACL injury were allocated into ā€œcopersā€ and ā€œnon-copersā€ according to their ability to return to pre-injury activity without ACL reconstruction. Lysholm and IKDC scales were recorded, and a control group (nĀ =Ā 10) matched for physical characteristics and activity levels was included. All participants performed 8-min walking tasks at 0, +10, and āˆ’10Ā % gradients. Energy cost was assessed by measurement of oxygen consumption (VO2). HR and ventilation (VE), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and VE/VO2 were also measured. Results: VO2 and HR were higher in ACL-deficient patients than in controls during walking at 0, +10, and āˆ’10Ā % gradients (pĀ &amp;lt;Ā 0.01ā€“0.05). There were no differences between ā€œcopersā€ and ā€œnon-copersā€ in VO2 and HR for any gradient. No differences were observed in VE, RER, and VE/VO2 among the three groups. Conclusions: The walking economy of level, uphill, and downhill walking is reduced in ACL-deficient patients. Despite the improved functional and clinical outcome of ā€œcopersā€, their walking economy appears similar to that of ā€œnon-copersā€ but impaired compared with healthy individuals. The higher energy demand and effort during locomotion in ā€œcopersā€ and ā€œnon-copersā€ has clinical implications for designing safer rehabilitation programmes. The increased energy cost in ā€œcopersā€ may be another parameter to consider when deciding on the most appropriate therapeutic intervention (operative and non-operative), particularly for athletes.
