Thermal and hygrometric properties of traditional calcarenite stones in the area of Palermo

    Get PDF
Il contributo espone le misure di conducibilit\ue0 termica svolte su tre conci di calcarenite conchiliare e la caratterizzazione igrometrica di uno di essi. I risultati sono confrontati con i dati termici e igrometrici riportati dalle norme tecniche esistenti (UNI 10351, UNI EN ISO 10456, UNI EN 1745).The energy improvement of historic buildings requires detailed knowledge of the thermal and hygrometric properties of traditional materials and components. These data should be collected for specific local contexts, where the features of historic constructions are comparable. For the purpose of developing this tool for the architectural heritage of Palermo, this research focuses on calcarenite stones, the material traditionally used in the construction of the local historic masonry, and illustrates the thermal and hygrometric characterization of three calcarenite samples, taken from two historic buildings in the Sicilian city

Probing the Noncommutative Standard Model at Hadron Colliders

    Get PDF
We study collider signals for the noncommutative extension of the standard model using the Seiberg-Witten maps for SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y to first order in the noncommutativity parameters theta_munu. In particular, we investigate the ensitivity of Z-gamma-production at the Tevatron and the LHC to the components of theta_munu. We discuss the range of validity of this approximation and estimate exclusion limits from a Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: 18 pages LaTeX, 23 figures. Preferential sulfoxidation of the methionine residues of glycophorin A

    Get PDF
AbstractCarbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to monitor the preferential sulfoxidation of the two methionine residues (8 and 81) of glycophorin A. In urea Met-8 is readily oxidized. However, Met-81 can only be oxidized in trifluoroacetic acid containing hydrogen peroxide. Our results also give some insight into the reagent accessibility of different portions of the protein molecule and the general stability of this glycoprotein

Higgsless electroweak symmetry breaking at the LHC

While the Higgs model is the best studied scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking, a number strongly-coupled models exist, predicting new signatures. Recent studies of WW and WZ final states at the ATLAS and CMS experiments are summarized and expected sensitivities are presented within the frameworks of the technicolor straw-man model and the electroweak chiral Lagrangian.Comment: Proceedings for the EPS HEP 2007 conference, Manchester, U.K., on behalf of the ATLAS and CMS Collaboration
